DIFFERENCES B/W PI and DAR

Both the polarization index (PI) and the dielectric absorption ratio (DAR) are insulation resistance tests
used to assess the condition of electrical insulation in equipment. However, they differ in their testing
methodologies and the specific information they provide.

Polarization Index (PI):

1. The PI test measures the insulation resistance at two specific time intervals during the test: one at 1
minute and another at 10 minutes after applying a high DC voltage to the insulation.

2. The ratio of the insulation resistance at 10 minutes to the insulation resistance at 1 minute provides
the PI value (PI = Insulation Resistance at 10 minutes / Insulation Resistance at 1 minute).

3. The PI test is primarily used to evaluate the overall condition and general integrity of the insulation. A
higher PI value (usually 2.0 or higher) indicates better insulation quality, while a low PI value (below 1.0)
may indicate moisture, contamination, or insulation degradation.

Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR):

1. The DAR test measures the ratio of the insulation resistance at 1 minute to the insulation resistance at
30 seconds after applying a high DC voltage to the insulation.

2. The formula for calculating the DAR is: DAR = Insulation Resistance at 1 minute / Insulation Resistance
at 30 seconds.

3. The DAR test is specifically used to detect the presence of absorption current in the insulation.
Absorption current occurs when the insulation material absorbs some of the electrical energy during the
initial application of voltage and slowly releases it over time.

4. A high DAR value (usually 1.25 or higher) indicates that the insulation does not have significant
absorption current, suggesting good quality insulation. A low DAR value (below 1.0) may indicate the
presence of absorption current and possible moisture or contaminants in the insulation.

In summary, while both PI and DAR tests are used for insulation resistance testing, the PI test assesses
the overall condition of insulation, while the DAR test specifically focuses on the presence of absorption
current. Both tests provide valuable information about the insulation's health and help identify potential
issues for further investigation or maintenance.

We normally do PI and DAR on motors because motors insulation resistance is not mentioned whereas
transformer IR values table is mentioned in NETA.
When to use PI and DAR:
For Motors:

Perform insulation-resistance tests in accordance with IEEE 43.

1. Machines larger than 200 horsepower (150 kilowatts): Test duration shall be for ten minutes.
Calculate polarization index.

2. Machines 200 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and less: Test duration shall be for one minute. Calculate
the dielectric-absorption ratio.

In motors PI minimum values should be according to insulation thermal class:

Class A: 1.25

Class B: 2

Class F: 2

Class H: 2

For Transformer:

1. For LV transformer calculate DAR.

2. For HV LV transformer calculate PI.
