INTRODUCTION

In August 2021, REVA University launched ‘REVA Vanamahotsava’, a novel initiative of

REVA University to plant 15,000 saplings in the state. Under this Initiative, the institution
launched ‘One Student, One Tree’ campaign, which aims to build a clean and green
environment with the active involvement of students. The initiative, with support from students
and faculty, is REVA’s commitment towards environment conservation and reduction of global
warming. Additionally, the AICTE recommends that every institute should conduct a plantation
drive. REVA University advises students to plant saplings and young trees. REVA University
aims to make students ecologically aware of issues concerning global warming, water
conservation, reduction of carbon footprints and the importance of sustainable living.

OBJECTIVES OFTHE PROGRAMME

To conduct a tree plantation drive in schools and villages under ‘One Student, One Tree’
campaign by REVA University

MISSION

Every student of REVA University will plant one sapling each. Students should nurture these
plants for at least during the first two years after planting.

VISION

To plant 15,000 saplings in 2021-22, and to plant one sapling per every new student who takes
admission at REVA University from the AY 2022-23 onwards.

PROCESS ADOPTED FOR PLANTING SAPLINGS:

Why plant a young tree rather than an adult tree?

If the project is to plant a tree for age, it’s better to plant a very young tree (2-3 years) at
maximum. Of course, planting small trees does have its problems, the main one being that it is
all too easy to lose trees amongst the surrounding growth. It’s necessary to wait several years
before becoming an adult, wellproportioned tree, according to the species. But there are many
more advantages:
The tree will be more vigorous and more resistant in adult age. Moreover, the roots can settle
better in the site and in the soil, but with mycorrhizal fungi, symbiosis allows better growth
than fertilizers and show better resistance.

Plant as a network, plant under the wind, the trees and the climatic changes. Plant
as a network :

It is possible to plant three young trees of the same species in a triangle with or without shafts.
Trees will grow, and their roots will make a network of roots and be more efficient to explore

the soil around them. Next, it is possible to cut two trees and keep the third, which will benefit
the whole root system (of three trees) in this case.

Trees and climatic changes :

Due to climatic changes, extreme events will become more frequent with more storms and
more heatwaves. Trees planted young and with an optimal method can resist better to such
extreme events. Plant under wind :

Wind serves a very important function in the growth of young trees. The stimulus of being
swayed by wind will actually encourage trees to develop stronger trunks and firmer root
systems. Trees that are given the support of strakes or the protection of a tube are much more
likely to blow down in later years. In general, we have found that it pays to give the young
tree a fairly hard time of it- not hard enough to damage it, but certainly hard enough to ensure
that you are growing a tough tree that will be with you for many years to come. Such a tree
will grow more slowly in its very early years but will grow stronger with time.

Srinivasa Nagara
The NSS Unit in association with School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, REVA
University organised “REVA Vanamahotsava” – A Tree Plantation Drive in Srinivasa Nagara
on September 9, 2021 at 9 AM. As part of the programme, they planted around 150 saplings
namely Alstonia plant/ Saptaparni, Pongamia Pinatta, Mahagani, Sampige Neem. Around 60
students and 30 staff members from School of Electrical & Electronics
Engineering, REVA University participated in this event. This noble initiative was undertaken
under the banner of “REVA VANAMAHOTSAVA” by the faculty and staff members of
School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, REVA University on account of 75th
Independence celebration “Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav”. The saplings were planted in the
vicinity of Srinivas Nagara (Byappanahalli) Village, nearby REVA university campus. The
staff members and students participated in the drive enthusiastically and helped each other in
planting the saplings. All the saplings were planted in the Srinivas Nagara
(Byappanahalli) village in temple area and government roads. Staff members and students of
REVA University also took an oath to look after the planted saplings, plant more and more
trees and encourage others to do the same.

Importance of Tree Plantation:

• Trees are important for us to live in. Tree plantation alludes to planting trees at a spot.

• Tree plantation has many advantages on the earth and our wellbeing. We as a whole inhale
oxygen to live, and trees are the main source of oxygen.

• Tree plantation guarantees that the supply of oxygen never ends.

• Tree plantation additionally urges vegetation to develop. Birds make their homes in the trees,

• subsequently adding to the beauty of nature.

• Birds additionally scatter seeds and pollen on the ground, resulting in the development of
different plants. So, tree plantation expands the biodiversity of a specific region.

Knowledge Gained :
Tree plantation teaches us about environmental awareness, ecosystem
interdependence, and the role of trees in mitigating climate change. It
promotes sustainable practices, community engagement, and personal
responsibility for environmental stewardship. It emphasizes long-term
impact and resilience in adapting to environmental challenges,
highlighting our interconnectedness with nature and the need for
conservation efforts to ensure a sustainable future.

Highlights of the program:

• Trees make air pollution-free.

• Trees provide us oxygen.

• Trees help in the cycling of seasons.

• Trees hold the soil tightly and prevent soil erosion.

• Trees provide us fruits, shelter, and woods.

• Trees save us from the heavy rain, and scorching heat.

• Trees help Ayurveda too as many medicines are made through leaves and bark of different
trees.

• Flowers from trees and plants give the air a beautiful and endearing smell that comes from
nature.

• In addition to providing natural oils and rosewater, trees also produce additional spices that
are used in cuisine.

• Trees protect us from the sun’s damaging rays, give us beautiful weather all year long, and
improve the quality of our lives with their gifts. As the primary source of food in civilization,
trees are at the top of the food chain.

Event Outcome:

• Participants were highly energetic and enthusiastic to make the event a big success. The tree
plantation was over with big smile on everyone’s face.
• Coordination and teamwork were the outcome.

• Environmental conservation awareness was spread.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THIS PROGRAM

My most challenging experience and at some point interesting experience was a tree planting
exercise that we were to carry out on the world tree planting day which is held every 14th
June 2024. During this year's tree planting day, I started out with trainings on how to plant
trees; the advantages of planting trees and also on how to take care of trees until they were
ready enough maybe after two years. The training part was so interesting, and I was so eager
to go out into the field and plant our own trees. Participating in a tree plantation drive was a
deeply gratifying experience for me. It felt meaningful to contribute to environmental
conservation firsthand, knowing each tree planted would benefit the ecosystem and future
generations. Working alongside others in the community fostered a sense of camaraderie and
purpose, reinforcing the importance of collective action in safeguarding our planet.
Witnessing the initial stages of growth and imagining the long-term impact further motivated
me to continue supporting such initiatives. It was a reminder of our responsibility to nurture
nature and strive for a sustainable future. Participating in a tree planting drive was not only an
opportunity to give back to the environment but also a chance to learn and connect with
others. It was inspiring to see people of all ages and backgrounds come together with a shared
goal of improving our surroundings. Being involved in the process of planting and nurturing
trees gave me a sense of accomplishment and reinforced my commitment to environmental
stewardship. Seeing the potential for these trees to provide shade, clean air, and habitat for
wildlife in the years to come was incredibly motivating. Overall, it was a memorable
experience that left a lasting impact on me. Last but the least I would like to thank Reva
University to give these beautiful opportunity and to execute this challenging task.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, tree plantation stands as a fundamental act of environmental stewardship and

sustainable development. It serves as a tangible commitment to preserving biodiversity,
improving air quality, mitigating climate change, and promoting overall ecosystem health.
Beyond these ecological benefits, tree plantation fosters community engagement, educates
individuals about environmental responsibility, and inspires collective action towards a
greener future. Embracing tree plantation is not merely about planting trees; it symbolizes our
dedication to creating resilient ecosystems and ensuring a healthier planet for generations to
come.
