BUHRM 5913 MANAGING PEOPLE

ASSESSMENT ONE: Reflective Analysis - 20%

Due Date: Sunday Week 4

Details of Task:
Select one of the challenges for HRM from the list below and an industry or occupation with which
you are familiar. Undertake research on your chosen challenge, aiming for a balanced range of
research from academic journal articles (AJAs) and popular media (such as podcasts, websites,
practitioner publications, etc). When using popular media as a source in an academic assessment
task, give consideration to the integrity and rigour of the source.

Given what you have learnt about the challenge from your research, and your knowledge of your
chosen industry or occupation, reflect on the following:
a) how that challenge has changed/impacted on HRM in that industry and
b) how you think that challenge will create further change/impact over the next decade.

Prepare a 1.000-word reflective piece (excluding references) in which you discuss your response to
the above task. Ensure you support your discussion with references from your research utilising APA
referencing. As this is a reflective task, you are encouraged to write in the first person.
CHALLENGES FOR HRM
• Recruiting in a global labour market
• Managing performance of remote workers
• Rewarding employees for their output instead of input
• Retaining staff in skill shortages
• Managing the dark side of technology
• Managing the virtual workforce and/or in the virtual workplace

Word Limit: 1.000 words (excluding reference list) +-10%

Value: 20%
Presentation Requirements: Document format
Marking Criteria: Refer to marking rubric.
Assessment Tips
This document has been prepared to assist you in preparing your first assessment in Managing
People. This assignment is due to be submitted by 22pm AEST on Sunday of Week Four.

In addition to learning about a specific challenge facing HRM, the purpose of this assignment is to
develop your skills in the areas of:

o Applying current HRM thinking and problems – represented by a specific chosen challenge to
HRM – to a particular industry/occupation.
o Reflecting on your own current understanding of HRM within the context of your chosen
industry/occupation, and making logical, rational and informed predictions of how HRM may
continue to change under effect of your chosen challenge.
o Researching to find appropriate, relevant, academic journal articles (AJAs) and discerning
appropriate popular media to support your discussion.

Topic Selection
Your first step in completing this assignment is to pick your challenge topic and your chosen
industry/occupation. You are encouraged to choose an industry or occupation with which you are
familiar, using through current or past employment. Your challenge selection might be based on a
personal interest, or perhaps a challenge you have already noticed impacting on HRM in your
particular industry or occupation.

Once you have chosen a topic, start reading on this topic. Begin with reading the study material
provided on Moodle on this topic and the relevant chapter/reading list items on this topic. Then
move on to researching the topic.

Researching
Research widely, do not just use the first articles you find! Note the minimum references
requirements, stipulated in the marking rubric. In regards to the AJAs used, ensure the articles come
from peer-reviewed, HRM and/or general management journals, and are less than 10 years old. In
regards to the popular media you use, demonstrate an awareness of the varied credibility of such
sources. For example, articles published in the Harvard Business Review are considered from
reputable a publication magazine, as opposed to a definition from Wikipedia which could be written
by anyone and therefore less reliable and reputable. You might like to consider using Endnote.
Information on Endnote can be found here.

Preparing to write the reflective piece

• Summarise the articles you will use, making note of the article’s title, introduction, its thesis
(or argument), the methods used in the research and the evidence and results. Make notes
and use a highlighter for key points throughout the article.
• Analyse the article. Read the article again, this time adopting a critical and analytical view.
Think about any problems or issues with the article and/or the research the article is based
on, and any limitations with the article or the research. Make notes on these areas, as well
as your own opinion of the article. For more information on critically evaluating an article
• Prepare a plan for the reflective piece. Working on a plan before commencing the writing
stage is one of the key steps you can take to produce a quality work. Writing a detailed plan
also makes the writing stage much easier. At this stage you should have some good notes
about each of the articles you are going to use in this task.

Writing the reflective piece

Once you’ve written your plan, read and review the marking rubric for this assignment. Read over
the criteria and then go over your plan, checking you have covered each of the criteria listed in the
marking rubric.

Write the reflective piece. You can now gather all the information collected to write this piece. As
you write, refer to the marking rubric and the assessment question to ensure you are responding to
the requirements of the assignment task.

Reference using the APA method. As you write the essay, have an APA reference guide open to refer
to, so you ensure that every citation and every item in the reference list is recorded correctly
according to the APA method. There is no reason your references should not 100% correct.
Numerous referencing guides are available, including the FedUni referencing guide.

Final Steps
Once you have finished writing the reflective piece, aim to proofread it at least twice. If you are not
confident in your writing skills, ask a friend or colleague to read over the essay for you, to point out
any grammatical or spelling errors. Remember that spell check is not infallible!

Lateness penalty. Ensure you plan your time to be able to meet the assignment due date and time.
Extensions are only granted with extenuating circumstances (having other assignments due or being
busy at work are not valid reasons for an extension). Lateness penalty is applied in the course at the
rate of 10% per day. Assignments submitted more than 10 days after the due date will receive a
grade of 0. If you have any questions about this assignment, as a first step read over the information
provided to ensure the answer is not already provided. If not, post a question on the Moodle
discussion board.

How and where to submit your assessment

Submit your assessment through the Moodle link for Assessment 1. Moodle uses Turnitin, a program
that checks your work for its originality against repositories of past assignments and data available in
the interest. A similarity score above 10 can be a concern and should be reviewed by yourself prior
to your final submission. Save your assignment as a .doc or .docx file, or PDF and ensure the file
name includes your name, student ID, course code and assignment number.
