 CODES OF PRACTICE AND STANDARDS

The design, detailing and construction of all framed structures comply with the following Indian
standards and codes in addition to local standards.

 RCC Framed Structure

 IS 456 – 200 – Code of Practice for plain and reinforces concrete.

 IS 800– 2007 – General Construction in Steel- code of practice
 IS 875 – (Part –I) – 1987 edition 3.1(1997-12) Code of practice for design loads (other than
earthquake) for buildings and structures- Dead loads
 IS 875 – (Part- II) – 1987 - reaffirmed 1997) Code of practice for design loads (other than
earthquake) for buildings and structures- Imposed loads
 IS 875 – (Part – III) – 2015) Code of practice for design loads (other than earthquake) for
buildings and structures- Wind loads
 IS 1893 – (2016) Code of practice for Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures

 Materials

1. Characteristic strength of concrete – M25 N/mm2

2. Characteristic strength of reinforced steel – HYSD FE 500 N/mm2

3. Yield stress of Structural Steel: - Fe250

 Design Loads

The design and construction of the structural works are based on the following loads

 Dead Loads

1. Self-weight of the structural components (beams, columns, etc.): the self-weight is

determined based on a concrete weight of 25 kN/m3.

2. Self-weight of the structural steel components (beams, columns, etc.): the self-
weight is determined based on a structural steel weight of 78.5 kN/m 3.

3. 1.5 Kn/sq.m services load for platforms.

4. 0.15 Kn/sq.m PPGI Sheet weight for load over roof.

5. 0.20 Kn/sq.m collateral load over roof.

 Live Loads

Live loads are assigned as per IS 875-Part II as follows

Type Of Area Live Load
For Platform area 5 KN/sqm
For MS Roof area 0.75 KN/sqm

• Machine Loads
Static and Dynamic load for S1001, S1002, S1003 and E1001 is as following.

Sr. Machine Static Load Dynamic

No. Tag Machine Name IN Kg Load in Kg
BUCKET ELEVATOR SUPPORT
1 EL – 1002 STRUCTURE 7500 8500
2 EL – 1002 BUCKET ELEVATOR 3900 4875
3 C – 1002 CHAIN CONVEYOR PEDESTAL 3480 4200

• Contingencies Loads
For Primary Beams 10 - Kn of additional load at beam centre
For Secondary Beams for platforms - 5 Kn additional load at beam centre.

 Wind Load Calculation Method

Wind load is calculated as per IS 875 (Part-III). Depending on the basic wind speed, terrain
category & class of the building the wind pressure is calculated using above formula,
Vz = Vb x k1 x k2 x k3 x k4
Vb - Basic wind speed = 39m/s
k1 - 1.0 Probability Factor (Mean probable design life of structure) Table-1
k2 - 1.15 (30m height) Terrain, Height Factor (Terrain Category-1) Table-2
k3 - 1 Topography Factor ……………….. Clause 6.3.3
k4 - 1.15 Risk Coefficient…………………… Clause 6.3.4
Pz = 0.6 x Vz2= 0.6x51.62 = 1598.704 N/m2
kd - 0.9 Wind Directionality Factor…………………… Clause 7.2.1
ka - 1.0 Area Averaging Factor…………………… Clause 7.2.2
kc - 0.9 Combination Factor …………………… Clause 7.3.3.13
Wind Pressure Pd = 1294.000 N/m2
 Seismic Load Calculation Method

Seismic load is calculated using response Seismic coefficient method as per IS 1893-2002 . Depending on
the available data, base shear coming on the building is calculated using above formula,
Vb = Z I Sa / (g 2 R)
Z - Zone factor 0.16 for zone 3
I - Importance factor 1.5
Sa/g - Response Factor depending upon time period ( Ta) of Vibration.
R - - Response reduction factor 5

The above base shear calculated is distributed on the building on each floor using distribution equation
mentioned in IS 1893-2016.
Live load reduction is considered as 25 % for LL less than equal to 3Kn/sq.m & 50% LL more than
3Kn/sq.m for calculating base shear.
This load coming on each floor is again distributed on column nodes depending upon the column shear
or axial load coming on the column at that story.

Building Description
A Skid for Bucket Elevator, for grain handleling having size of 2 m x 2 m is proposed with height
of 31 m, Building has open foundation, Steel frame strcuture and checkered plate as platform.
Cladding along perifery is considered.

Design Methodology :

a. Steel Frame design is carried out using Limit State Method. Design of all
structural member such as beams, slabs, columns and Foundations are designed
by Limit State method confirming to IS 800-2007
b. Analysis is carried out using Bently Staad. Frame of above building is developed
and analyzed using necessary load combinations. The model is loaded manually
using above dead loads, live loads and Wind loads
c. Steel columns and Beams are designed using Staad itself, RCC footings are
designed using separate spread sheets after getting the reactions from Staad
model output file.
d. Checkered Plate, and Purlins are designed using separate spread sheets after
getting the forces from Staad model output file.
