EFT TAPPING
4
EFT BACKGROUND
● Other big contributors were David Feinstein PhD & Dawson Church, PhD
● 2000 - Harvard researcher Eric Leskowitz found that tapping acupoints signals your
brain’s fear centre (amygdala) to dial down the response to stress and pain.
● Specifically designed for resourcing, preparation, regulation, & positive state changes
HOLISTIC APPROACH

SECTION 2:
HOW TAPPING WORKS
*By tapping-in resources, neurons wire & fire together to create new positive and
more adaptive neural pathways.
POLYVAGAL 101
6
NERVOUS SYSTEM
● Prepares your body for action & regulates ● Helps you unwind, reorganize, & rejuvenate
VAGUS NERVE
NEUROCEPTION
The process of using the nervous system to determine whether the environment is
SAFE or DANGEROUS
These tapping/BLS techniques help the nervous system sense into SAFETY (Ventral Vagal)
7
SENSING INTO SAFETY
Activation of the front side (Ventral Vagal) of the vagus nerve helps you feel
safe-enough & activates social engagement.
VAGAL TONING
Tapping Techniques Tone & Gently Stimulate the Ventral Vagal Response to
Create More Ease.
● Lowers anxiety. Releasing fight & flight energies from the body
BLS connects the nerve tracks from one side of the brain to the other
= Integration
8
BLS & THE BRAIN
The two sides of the brain are joined at the bottom by the corpus callosum.

12
ROLE OF RESOURCE TAPPING
In Trauma Work
● Moves client toward the reality of what happened, rather than internally denying,
● Assess current coping skills, ability to tolerate distress, and to regulate emotions
THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENT
Essential Ingredients:
● Therapist’s SELF-energy
● Building a sacred and unhurried space that allows for Safety & Trust
13
PRESENCE

SECTION 5:
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
15
WHEN TO DO TAPPING?
● Complex trauma, dissociative disorders, or high acuity may need to stabilize first
RESOURCE-BASED BLS
General Instructions
2. Ask client to notice & describe what is Positive. Tap/BLS added only with positive
16
EYES OPEN OR CLOSED
● If client’s comfortable closing their eyes it may help connect more; but it is not
necessary
THE RESOURCES
● Research shows that binaural beats (bilateral sounds) reduce anxiety, stress, & negative
mental states
● Draws on research that BLS supports nervous system relaxation (Vagal Toning) by crossing
17
SACRED HEALING SPACE
Simple Instructions
IMAGE. “Imagine a sacred healing space for you to go to. It can be somewhere you have
been before, or create a new space from your imagination. Take your time, and when you
have the image in your mind's eye nod or let me know in another way that works for you”.
“What image represents your scared healing space? Describe what you see.”
Feelings & Sensations. "As you think of your own sacred place, what feelings come up for you?
Enhance. "Focus on your sacred place-it’s sights, sounds, smells, and sensations. Describe what
● If negative comes up, DO NOT use Tapping/BLS. Guide client back to positive
18
ATTACHMENT RESOURCING
ATTACHMENT FIGURES
● Caring Grandparents
INSTILLING FIGURES
General Instructions
Tapping-in. Tap/BLS of choice (5-15 passes) Check in. “What do you notice now?”
Repeat. If positive

NURTURING QUALITIES
QUALITIES
*A basic trust in others is the foundation on which all other traits rest.
SIGNIFICANCE OF NURTURANCE
● All humans need nurturance. When we do not receive nurturance in and after
overwhelming situations we can become traumatized.

MERIDIAN TAPPING
General Instructions Cont.
● While Tapping on the meridian points bring intention and attention on accepting and
● Tapping can access your body’s energy, helping to restore it to a balanced state
24
MERIDIAN TAPPING
General Instructions Cont.
Statement. "Even though I____________ (issue), I completely love & accept myself."
● Affirm using words like “choose,” “time,” “allow,” or “willing” to imply it’s your decision
● Affirm using only positive words—no negative connotations - like illness, stress, etc.
● Use clients words, or therapist instructed words, to deepen associated networks and release
● Be creative and change the phrase as you tap to enhance and deepen
● Stop TAPPING/BLS
● ‘Light up’ a different resource that is positive - if they can then TAP/BLS (6-12 passes)
● Imagine a container or space that can hold the distress until you are ready to come
back to it (a cozy space or room, a treasure chest, a safe, a basket, a vase, etc).
25
RED-FLAGS
● Unstable life conditions. Lacks support ● Pathological dissociation: amnesia & high
internal conflict

• 100+ Meta Analysis & Systematic Reviews • 100+ research studies, reviews, &
• and more...
26
EXAMINING THE RESEARCH
● Significant decrease in anxiety & depression ● Helps most feel calmer & more relaxed
These tapping techniques are generally very safe when done carefully &
correctly, yet possible risks & limitations may include:
● Clients with obsessive & compulsive disorders may use these compulsively
LIMITATIONS
The tapping techniques taught in this training are designed to be used for resourcing
and preparing clients, with a focus on positive affect and state changes, and are not
CAUTION:
BLS sets that are longer than instructed in this course, or that focus on traumatic

Sacred Space
Creating a Safe Haven for Inner Retreat & Healing
SET UP. you can use this anytime as a preparation or on its own
Find a comfortable seat where you feel relaxed, and close or soften your eyes. Bring your
awareness to your body and consciously breathe into any tension and areas of contact.
Inhale, and imagine bringing energy up from the Earth and into your body. Exhale all the air out.
Inhale again, bringing earth energy into your legs, belly, chest, and throat. Hold a moment if you
can, and then exhale slowly. Do this several times.
______________________________________________________________________________
*If positive, add tapping/BLS (6-12 passes)
INTEGRATION.
● Ask, “Notice any sensory experiences that you are enjoying in your inner sanctuary, what
do you hear, see, feel, smell, etc?
● Track and ask how your client is doing, if it is positive, keep using tapping/BLS..
● If negative comes in, STOP the tapping or BLS.
REINFORCEMENT.
If positive, continue several more times taking in more of the positive feelings, images, and
sensations they are experiencing and adding tapping/BLS (6-12).
If the client is really doing well with it, luxuriating in it, you can lengthen the sets. Use good
clinical judgment and your intuition.
PROBLEMS.
If intrusive negative memories, associations, or feelings arise, STOP Tapping/BLS. Try using a
Container for the distressing material. If possible, go back to the sacred space and see if it
remains positive, OR create a new sacred space, OR go to a different exercise altogether.
Nurturing figure.
Imagine a person, animal, entity, object, or symbol that carries nurturing qualities, it can be real,
imagined, or a combination of both.

Enhance.
Let’s enhance this image as strongly as you can.
Check in.
"How was that?”; “How do you feel now?”; “What do you notice now?”
____________________________________________________________________________
More Notes.
● If positive is strengthening, continue Tapping/BLS (6-12)
○ Continue the BLS as long as your client feels the nurturing qualities strengthening
and integrating
● If there is more than 1 nurturing resource, have the client bring up the next nurturing
figure and tap in next
● Have the client imagine being held by the nurturing figure or figures. Add Tapping/BLS to
deepen the felt sense of being fully nurtured
● If negative comes in, DO NOT proceed with Tapping/BLS. Explore concerns and return
when after concerns are addressed
Protective figure.
Imagine a real or imaginary person, animal, entity, or symbol that carries protective qualities.
You can pull ideas from experiences, movies, books, or imagination.

team, backing you up when you need it. __________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
Now take a moment to look around the circle, take it in. Look at each team member, one at a
time. Feel all of their love and protection for you.
Enhance.
Soak up the details with your imagination and your senses. Sense into the love and protection
you receive. Take you time and signal me when you have a strong sense of the love, support,

__________________________________________________________________________
Enhance.
Let’s enhance these sensations, feelings, and the image as strongly as you can.
Check in.
"How was that?”; “How do you feel now?”; “What do you notice now?”
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
More Notes.
● If positive is strengthening, continue Tapping or BLS (6-12)
○ Continue the BLS as long as your client feels ‘Safe Enough Now’ qualities
strengthening and integrating
● If negative comes in, DO NOT proceed with Tapping or BLS. Explore concerns and return
when after concerns are addressed
Integration.
“Can you imagine doing this in the morning, before you go to bed, or another helpful time?”
Subtle electro-magnetic energy flows through the meridian pathways. Each ‘Tapping Point’ is
the end-point of one or several meridians. A negative emotion or pain can stop the energy flow
of a meridian and create a blockage. When you ‘Tap’ on meridian points, blockages are
removed, so energy can flow again.
THE SETUP.
Brings the issue into awareness, so you can unwire and untangle the neurological pathways of
associated distress. It sets the stage for positive energy to bring in adaptive information.
● Notice something that is bothering you. It might be a feeling in your body, a specific
thought, or an issue you are dealing with:
● Describe:________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________.”
SEQUENCE.
Feel free to vent your emotions around the statement and reminder phrase. Stay present and
take conscious breaths in-between.
REPEAT SEQUENCE.
1. Change wording to:
a. “Even though I still have some of this ___________________________________,
I deeply and completely accept myself”
b. “This remaining _____________________________.
2. Repeat the whole sequence again (above) with modified statement or phrase
3. Repeat until it is a 0, or as low as it will go
Important Notes
● As you go through this several times, you may NOTICE new ‘aspects’ (emotions, feelings,
thoughts, beliefs, issues etc) coming up. When you are done with this target. Then do a
NEW set-up for these NEW Aspects.
● Feelings can become more intense as you work through it and the numbness moves out.
● If too much, break the issue down into smaller. Keep it manageable and gentle.
● Add imagery, visualization, or somatic awareness when helpful.
The side of the hand point is at the outer edge of the pinky side in the fleshy area. I use
the index, middle, and ring fingers together on the opposite hand, to tap this area.
● Emotion: Agitation. Meridian: Small intestine
● Releases grief and feelings of being stuck
● Connects to letting go, being content, and feeling joy
The top of the head point is located at the crown center. I use the index, middle, ring, &
pinky fingers together, with both hands, to tap the area in the center of the 2 brain
hemispheres on the top of the head.
● Emotion: Burdened. Meridian: Governing Vessel. Chakra: Crown
The eyebrow points are located at the beginning, or inner edge, of the eyebrow on the
brow bone, near the center of the face. I use the index and middle fingers together, on
both hands, to tap the two eyebrow points.
● Emotion: Fear. Meridian: Bladder
● Releases trauma, hurt, sadness, dread, & restlessness
● Connects to emotional healing & presence
The side of the eye points are located on the bone at the side of the eye. Note: it is not
at the temple. Using the index and middle fingers together, tap on both sides of the eye
points at the same time.
The under the eye points are on the bone under the eye, even with the pupils. Using the
fingertips of the index and middle fingers, gently tap this spot under both eyes.
● Emotion: Anxiety. Meridian: Stomach
● Releases fear, emptiness, disappointment, & worry
● Connects to contentment, calm, groundedness, & safety
Now tap under the nose with the index and middle finger of one hand. The spot is
roughly midway between the bottom of the nose and the top of the lip.
● Emotion: Shame. Meridian: Governing vessel
The chin point is not really on the chin; it is mid-way between the bottom of the lower
lip and the chin, in that indentation area.
● Emotion: Confusion. Meridian: Central Vessel
● Releases confusion, disconnection, & uncertainty
● Connects to confidence, trust, & self-acceptance
The collarbone spots are located about one inch down and over towards the outside of
where a man would tie his tie. I use four fingers together on each hand to tap the
collarbone spots.
The under the arm point is located about 4 inches below the armpit. I lift my left arm
and use the four fingers of my right hand to tap under my left arm. Tap, tap, tap, tap,
tap, tap, tap. Repeat the words “constricted breathing”.
● Emotion: Guilt. Meridian: Spleen
● Releases guilt, worry, obsessing, & poor esteem
● Connects to relaxation, confidence, & compassion
● The more specific you are about the target the better
● Affirm words like “choose,” “time,” “allow,” and “willing” to imply it’s a decision
● Affirm only positive words—no negative connotations - like illness, stress, etc.
● Make them believable to you at some level
Example Statements
● Take the time to connect, track, & hold presence with your client
● Do not rush the process; give time for the client to build trust
● Ensure client feels connected to your voice, eye contact, & presence
48
Mechanics & Setup
TAPPING & BLS
Sitting Position
● Comfort
● Distance
● Staying attuned whether in person or Telehealth
49
Breathe Practices
PRACTICES FOR CONSCIOUS AWARENESS & HEALING PRESENCE
1. Initiate a slow eye movement (w/out moving head) to look at the right
shoulder with a slow inhale and then a slow exhale
2. Initiate a slow eye movement (w/out moving head) to look at the left shoulder
with a slow inhale and slow exhale
3. Continue until client feels calmer
4. Alternative breath: Could also do Figure 8’s
50
Movement Practices
BILATERAL PRACTICES TO BALANCE THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
NECK ROLLS
● Slowly (gently) roll your neck with conscious breathing
and awareness
● Roll counterclockwise and then clockwise
○ If no neck issues, roll in a complete circle including
rolling the head frontwards and backwards - in a
complete circle
○ For neck issues, roll front only from shoulder to
shoulder
● Repeat both directions, 5-10 times
51
Grounding Overarousal
POLYVAGAL TONING PRACTICES
Invite in Parasympathetic
● Paired Muscle Relaxation
● Body Scan or other guided meditation
● Breathing (alternate nostril, slow-deep breathing w/ longer
exhale etc.) Yin yoga poses
● Slow neck or eye rolls with conscious breath
● Watch something that makes you laugh
● Connect with a pet or someone that feels safe and calming
Self - Soothing
● Foot massage with oil
● Massage shoulders, neck, and other areas of body
● Soothing music, essential oils, candles, etc.
52
Grounding Overarousal
POLYVAGAL TONING PRACTICES
Comparison of Textures
● Ask the client to feel the surface of the couch or chair, and describe; or feel
his/her feet on the floor, key ring, or clothing, and describe the differences in
textures.
Pillow Toss
● Play “catch” with a soft object, such as a small pillow, stuffed animal, or
balled-up tissue. If on Telehealth, have the client softly do this in 1 hand, or
from hand to hand.
