2 How Tapping Works 4 Step by Step Instruction

5 Research, Evidence, & Risks

SECTION 1:
TAPPING 101

Resource Installation, BLS, &

Meridian Tapping for Holistic Healing

1
TYPES OF BLS: EM'S

Eye Movements

TYPES OF BLS: OTHER

Tapping, Buzzers, Audio Sounds,

& Binaural Music

TYPES OF BLS: MOVEMENT

Bilateral Movements

● Cross Crawl (Donna Eden)

● Hiking & Walking
● Horseback Riding
● Eye/Neck Rolling
● Drumming
● Twisting Poses
● and more…

2
EMDR

Eye Movement & Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

● Robust & powerful trauma-informed therapeutic model for licensed mental health

professionals

● Takes in-depth training, commitment, & ongoing consultation, because it can Access

deep trauma & dissociative material

EMDR RESOURCING

EMDR Resourcing

● Created by Francine Shapiro in 1987

● Use of Eye Movements. Science of BLS develops and additional forms of BLS added

● Leeds & Korn adds Resource Development Installation (RDI) to resource, strengthen

positive associations, prep for trauma work, and to close sessions

● Resource Tapping™. Adaptation by Laurel Parnell (2008) for attachment work

RESOURCE TAPPING CONT.

Instilling Resources & Positive Affect

● Prepares client for trauma-processing

● Evidence-based

● Repairs & balances the nervous system

● Safe & gentle

● Professionals & clients (ALL) can use

3
MERIDIAN ENERGY WORK

Tapping, massaging, or applying needles are

used on the Meridian Points as a energy

medicine that originates from Chinese Medicine.

EFT TAPPING

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an

evidence-based mind-body-spirit practice that

consists of tapping on specific meridian points

(acupoints) while working through a wide range of

emotions.

EFT TAPPING

Using The Body’s Subtle Energy System

● A network of energy pathways, called meridians

● The primo vascular system has been established in balancing &

integrating the cardiovascular, nervous, immune, & hormonal systems

● Meridian pathways are accessible via specific locations on the body

called acupoints

4
EFT BACKGROUND

Meridian Tapping & EFT

● 1070's, Roger Callahan working with meridian's & phobias

○ Created Thought Field Therapy (THT)

● His student, Gary Craig created EFT in 1993

● Other big contributors were David Feinstein PhD & Dawson Church, PhD

● 2000 - Harvard researcher Eric Leskowitz found that tapping acupoints signals your

brain’s fear centre (amygdala) to dial down the response to stress and pain.

SETTING CLEAR GOALS

Goals for Safety with Tapping & BLS Resourcing

● Specifically designed for resourcing, preparation, regulation, & positive state changes

● NOT to be used for Trauma Processing

● Does NOT mean you are an EMDR-trained therapist

● Please use these techniques wisely & safely

● Identify existing & needed resources

● Assess clients readiness & willingness

HOLISTIC APPROACH

Trauma-Informed Tapping Techniques (when used correctly) are:

• Resource & strength-based
● Gentle, effective, and compassionate
• Trauma-informed
● Meaningful, purposeful, and spiritual • Attachment-focused
● Brian-wise and Mind-wise

5
SECTION 2:
HOW TAPPING WORKS

The Science & Mechanisms of Action

HOW DOES TAPPING WORK?

Neurons that fire together, wire together.

-Hebb's Law

*By tapping-in resources, neurons wire & fire together to create new positive and
more adaptive neural pathways.

POLYVAGAL 101

The Autonomic Nervous System:

● Regulates the body & organs

● Mediates emotional expression & response

● Supports digestion, sleep, & immune system

6
NERVOUS SYSTEM

Sympathetic Nervous System Parasympathetic Nervous System

● Prepares your body for action & regulates ● Helps you unwind, reorganize, & rejuvenate

arousal after activity or threat

● Vigilance, flight, & fight ● Rest & digest

● Releases cortisol & adrenaline ● In threat, it shuts down

VAGUS NERVE

Ventral Vagal Dorsal Vagal

● Causes shut down, shock, & depressive

Supports relaxation, social engagement,
responses in threat
bonding, & overall wellbeing

● Tapping Resources are strategically Sympathetic Chain

accessing the Ventral Vagal Response
● Causes arousal & action in threat

NEUROCEPTION

The process of using the nervous system to determine whether the environment is

SAFE or DANGEROUS

These tapping/BLS techniques help the nervous system sense into SAFETY (Ventral Vagal)

7
SENSING INTO SAFETY

Activation of the front side (Ventral Vagal) of the vagus nerve helps you feel
safe-enough & activates social engagement.

● Self-energy: Calm, Curious, Compassion, Connection, Courage, & Clarity

● Language and Connection

● Empathy and Intimacy

VAGAL TONING

Tapping Techniques Tone & Gently Stimulate the Ventral Vagal Response to
Create More Ease.

● Lowers anxiety. Releasing fight & flight energies from the body

● Helps your nervous system & brain realize “I am SAFE-Enough”

● Alert and relaxed

BILATERAL STIMULATION: BLS

BILATERAL movements, beats, sounds, or sensations

BLS connects the nerve tracks from one side of the brain to the other

= Integration

= Communication of the 2-hemispheres

= Engages the whole brain

8
BLS & THE BRAIN

The two sides of the brain are joined at the bottom by the corpus callosum.

Where attention goes energy flows. - James Redfield

REPAIRS DISORGANIZATION

When the 2 hemispheres are not integrating, DISORGANIZATION occurs, making it

difficult to be mindful and present enough to process emotional experiences.

BLS CONNECTIONS

When the left (language) & right (attention/memory) hemispheres CROSSOVER,

CONNECT, & INTEGRATE, we can reflect and process emotionally-related information to

bring forth adaptive insight & resolution

9
MERIDIAN TAPPING

“Acupoint tapping sends signals directly to the stress centers of the

midbrain, not mediated by the frontal lobes (the thinking part, active in
talk therapy.”
-Dr. Dawson Church

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM (EFT)

Tapping ENERGY PSYCHOLOGY interventions can:

● Provide immediate relief & stabilization

● Extinguish conditioned responses & patterns

● Promote optimal functioning

● Help in healing complex psychological problems

TAPPING MERIDIAN POINTS

● Self-help therapeutic technique that is

evidence-based

● Tapping on Acupressure points that are

the end point of the Meridians

10
THE MERIDIANS

HOW DOES IT HELP?

Tapping & BLS

● Builds confidence & resiliency ● Enables healing

● Reduces pain & suffering ● Wires in positive affect

● Enhances coping ● Fills in developmental deficits

● Regulates the nervous system ● Prepares for deeper trauma work

● Decreases sympathetic NS activation

SECTION 3:
CLIENT READINESS

Readiness Factors for

Tapping & Resource BLS

11
READINESS FACTORS

Take time to connect, attune, and build rapport.

● Client can maintain dual-awareness

● Physical health: Client can tolerate activation from tapping

● Assess for Pathological Dissociation that may interfere

● Identify existing & needed (missing) resources

● Consider readiness, willingness, & comfort level to bring in more safety

IMPORTANT OF PRESENCE

The Therapist’s Presence provides a safe-enough foundation.

● Grounded: calm, centered, clear

● Spacious: open, nonjudgmental, compassionate, ‘not taking it on’

● Relational: connectedness, body language, soft eyes, caring, attuned

● Transcendent: no agenda, wisdom, non judgemental, clarity, Intuitive

SECTION 4:
Cultivating Calm, Connection, & Empowerment

Tapping for Emotional Balance

12
ROLE OF RESOURCE TAPPING
In Trauma Work

Makes the Healing Journey Feel Safer.

● Addresses attachment wounds & developmental deficits, improving emotion regulation

● Moves client toward the reality of what happened, rather than internally denying,

rejecting, and exiling wounds and pain

● Provides an internal experience of child parts getting comfort and support

IDENTIFY NEEDED RESOURCES

Phase 1 = History-taking. Set Goals, Determine Fit, and Connect.

● Assess current coping skills, ability to tolerate distress, and to regulate emotions

● Assess developmental traumas and early trauma history

● Assess primary attachment style

Phase 2 = Stabilize, Resource, Preparation, Assess Further, and Attune.

● Focus on stabilization, if needed. Safety 1st

THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENT

Essential Ingredients:

● Therapist’s SELF-energy

AN AMAZING WAY TO WORK
Envision a Comprehensive Integrated Model

Learn to use Tapping & Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) methods combined with

Polyvagal Theory, attachment theory, & transpersonal psychology to effectively,

creatively, and intuitively resource clients through a trauma-informed lens.

BASIC ASSUMPTIONS

● We all have natural innate healing & a drive to heal

● We are human & need caring support

● We can access reserves of resources

● We can enhance SELF-energy by tapping into: curiosity, compassion, courage,

confidence, centeredness, connection, creativity, & clarity

● We ALL have an inner consciousness that is WHOLE

SECTION 5:
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Using Tapping Techniques in

Trauma Treatment

15
WHEN TO DO TAPPING?

● Phase 2 = Stabilize, Assess, Resource, Prep, & Connect

○ Build tolerance & coping skills

● Phase 3 = Use to strengthen existing resources

○ Build-in needed resources and prep for trauma work

● Phase 4 = Trauma, attachment, & long-term work

○ Close sessions, tolerate trauma processing, and build confidence

WHO TO DO TAPPING WITH?

Most Clients Can Do Tapping & Resource BLS Techniques

● As with all therapies, it may not be or work for everyone

○ Always honor, respect & empower your client with choice

● Use cultural humility & competency; adapt as needed

● Complex trauma, dissociative disorders, or high acuity may need to stabilize first

● Seek consultation and more specific trainings

RESOURCE-BASED BLS

General Instructions

1. ‘LIGHT UP’ the identified "Resource"

● Imagine feelings & sensations to strengthen the connection = Neuroception

● Deepen the felt sense of the resources

● Begin Tapping/BLS (6-12 passes)

2. Ask client to notice & describe what is Positive. Tap/BLS added only with positive

● Add Tapping/BLS (6- 12 passes)

16
EYES OPEN OR CLOSED

Choosing the Optimal Visual Focus

● If client’s comfortable closing their eyes it may help connect more; but it is not

necessary

● Empower your client to decide what is best for them

THE RESOURCES

BINAURAL BEATS & MUSIC

Gentle & Easily Accessible for In- & Out- of Session.

● Research shows that binaural beats (bilateral sounds) reduce anxiety, stress, & negative

mental states

● Improves clarity and focus of mind

● Draws on research that BLS supports nervous system relaxation (Vagal Toning) by crossing

over the brain hemispheres

● ‘Light up’ a different resource that is positive - if they can then TAP/BLS (6-12 passes)

If Still Negative or Unpleasant, Try a Container.

● Imagine a container or space that can hold the distress until you are ready to come

back to it (a cozy space or room, a treasure chest, a safe, a basket, a vase, etc).

25
RED-FLAGS

● Difficulty developing rapport ● Physical health: Neurological conditions

Sacred Space
Creating a Safe Haven for Inner Retreat & Healing

SET UP. you can use this anytime as a preparation or on its own
Find a comfortable seat where you feel relaxed, and close or soften your eyes. Bring your
awareness to your body and consciously breathe into any tension and areas of contact.

Inhale, and imagine bringing energy up from the Earth and into your body. Exhale all the air out.
Inhale again, bringing earth energy into your legs, belly, chest, and throat. Hold a moment if you
can, and then exhale slowly. Do this several times.

IMAGE. add tapping or BLS

Now, create an inner sacred sanctuary just for you. It can be real, imaginary, or a combination.
Be creative and when you have it captured in your mind's eye, just nod or let me know in
another way. Describe the image and how it makes you feel?

______________________________________________________________________________
*If positive, add tapping/BLS (6-12 passes)

INTEGRATION.
● Ask, “Notice any sensory experiences that you are enjoying in your inner sanctuary, what
do you hear, see, feel, smell, etc?
● Track and ask how your client is doing, if it is positive, keep using tapping/BLS..
● If negative comes in, STOP the tapping or BLS.

REINFORCEMENT.
If positive, continue several more times taking in more of the positive feelings, images, and
sensations they are experiencing and adding tapping/BLS (6-12).

If the client is really doing well with it, luxuriating in it, you can lengthen the sets. Use good
clinical judgment and your intuition.

PROBLEMS.
If intrusive negative memories, associations, or feelings arise, STOP Tapping/BLS. Try using a
Container for the distressing material. If possible, go back to the sacred space and see if it
remains positive, OR create a new sacred space, OR go to a different exercise altogether.

More Notes.
● If positive is strengthening, continue Tapping or BLS (5-12 passes)
○ Continue the BLS as long as your client feels the figure and the protective
qualities strengthening and integrating
● If there is more than 1 protective resource, have the client bring up the next protective
figure and tap in next
● Have the client imagine being completely protected. Add tapping or BLS to deepen the
felt sense of being fully protected
● If negative comes in, DO NOT proceed with Tapping or BLS. Explore concerns and return
when after concerns are addressed

Internal Team.
Imagine all of your figures together as a TEAM. Observe how it feels to have them as an internal
team, backing you up when you need it. __________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________

Instill a Circle of Love & Support.

"Go inside, you can close your eyes if that feels good to you. Take a few conscious breaths, in
and out. Relax and let go on the exhale. Bring yourself to a quiet place inside. When you feel
more relaxed, imagine yourself being surrounded by your nurturing, protective, and wise
figures, your INTERNAL TEAM.

Now take a moment to look around the circle, take it in. Look at each team member, one at a
time. Feel all of their love and protection for you.

Enhance.
Soak up the details with your imagination and your senses. Sense into the love and protection

For Complex Trauma & DID Clients.

Modify by doing this with the separate parts (using the client’s language), “the angry kid, the
one who doesn’t talk, the ‘manager’, or named alters, etc”. This exercise can help the client feel
less distress, giving a greater sense of “us” vs. “them”. It may help your client find exiled,
shadowed, and repressed feelings and parts to reconnect with.

Integration.
“Can you imagine doing this in the morning or before you go to bed?”

Meridian Tapping & Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Subtle electro-magnetic energy flows through the meridian pathways. Each ‘Tapping Point’ is
the end-point of one or several meridians. A negative emotion or pain can stop the energy flow
of a meridian and create a blockage. When you ‘Tap’ on meridian points, blockages are
removed, so energy can flow again.

THE SETUP.

Brings the issue into awareness, so you can unwire and untangle the neurological pathways of
associated distress. It sets the stage for positive energy to bring in adaptive information.

● Notice something that is bothering you. It might be a feeling in your body, a specific
thought, or an issue you are dealing with:

● Describe:________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

● Rate the intensity on a scale of 0-10 (10 is the worst)__________________________

STATEMENT. Core examples.

Modify to make it believable and relatable. See below (Tips for Effective Statements) for more
.
● “Even though I _________________ (phrase), I am fine and I accept myself.”

● "Even though I __________________ (phrase), I completely love and accept myself."

● “Even though I __________________ (phrase), anything is possible and miracles are

happening now.”

Your Full Statement

“Even though I __________________________________________,_____________________

____________________________________________________________________.”

Your Reminder Phrase

“Even though ____________________________________________.

SEQUENCE.
Feel free to vent your emotions around the statement and reminder phrase. Stay present and
take conscious breaths in-between.

1. Side of Hand Point

a. Soft fleshy part of the side of hand; below the pinky finger
b. Repeat the ‘Full Statement’ 3 times while tapping this point

2. Remaining Points, Starting at the Top of the Head

a. Gently tap the following points 7-10 times while saying the ‘Reminder Phrase’
i. Top of Head. Eyebrow. Side of Eye. Under Eye. Under Nose. Chin.
Collarbone. Underarm.
3. Check in & Measure
a. Reaccess Intensity (1-10)
b. If more than 0, continue

REPEAT SEQUENCE.
1. Change wording to:
a. “Even though I still have some of this ___________________________________,
I deeply and completely accept myself”
b. “This remaining _____________________________.
2. Repeat the whole sequence again (above) with modified statement or phrase
3. Repeat until it is a 0, or as low as it will go

Important Notes
● As you go through this several times, you may NOTICE new ‘aspects’ (emotions, feelings,
thoughts, beliefs, issues etc) coming up. When you are done with this target. Then do a
NEW set-up for these NEW Aspects.
● Feelings can become more intense as you work through it and the numbness moves out.
● If too much, break the issue down into smaller. Keep it manageable and gentle.
● Add imagery, visualization, or somatic awareness when helpful.

Considerations for Tapping
Therapeutic Relationship, Empathy, & Relational Attunement are Always Key

● Designed for resourcing, preparation, regulation, & positive state change

● Take the time to connect, track, & hold presence with your client

● Identify both existing and needed coping skills & resources

● Assess your client’s readiness & willingness

● Telehealth - discuss planning for virtual issues

● Ensure client has a comfortable & private space

● Do not rush the process; give time for the client to build trust

● Assess and watch for red-flags & contraindications

● Stay abreast on cultural considerations & competencies

● Consider client’s age, development stage, understanding, & ability

● Be creative with adding things of comfort, grounding, or connection

● Ensure client feels connected to your voice, eye contact, & presence

48
Mechanics & Setup
TAPPING & BLS

Stabilization & Resources

● Slower taps or BLS
● Rule of Thumb: 6-12 passes

Sitting Position
● Comfort
● Distance
● Staying attuned whether in person or Telehealth

Tapping, Tactile, or Auditory

● "A pass = 1 on each side (round trip) | Speed | Intensity

Eye Movement Mechanics

● “A pass” = one round-trip, centerline to centerline

Breathe Practices
PRACTICES FOR CONSCIOUS AWARENESS & HEALING PRESENCE

CONSCIOUS NOSTRIL BREATHING

1. Begin by becoming aware of your breath
2. As you're ready, take an inhale through your nose. Next, exhale and release
stagnant energy out of your nose
3. Gently close your mouth and continue to be conscious of your breath, in
through the nose, and out through the nose
4. Use often, for 1 to 10 breath cycles, or until client feels calmer

ALTERNATE EYE ROLL BREATHING

1. Initiate a slow eye movement (w/out moving head) to look at the right
shoulder with a slow inhale and then a slow exhale
2. Initiate a slow eye movement (w/out moving head) to look at the left shoulder
with a slow inhale and slow exhale
3. Continue until client feels calmer
4. Alternative breath: Could also do Figure 8’s

ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATHING

1. Find a comfortable seat with your heart open
2. With the right hand, rest your pointer and middle finger between the eyebrows
3. Close the left nostril with the right thumb. Slowly inhale into the right nostril
4. Now, close the left nostril with the ring finger and exhale out the right nostril
5. Keep the right nostril open and slowly inhale, switch to the open left nostril and
slowly exhale. Repeat 5-10 cycles

50
Movement Practices
BILATERAL PRACTICES TO BALANCE THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

NECK ROLLS
● Slowly (gently) roll your neck with conscious breathing
and awareness
● Roll counterclockwise and then clockwise
○ If no neck issues, roll in a complete circle including
rolling the head frontwards and backwards - in a
complete circle
○ For neck issues, roll front only from shoulder to
shoulder
● Repeat both directions, 5-10 times

OTHER BILATERAL MOVEMENTS. Be Creative

● Cross Crawl Exercises

● Hiking & walking

● Horseback riding
● Drumming
● Jumping jacks, bicycle crunches, leg lifts
● Eye & Jaw Rolls
● Twisting pose
● And more…

51
Grounding Overarousal
POLYVAGAL TONING PRACTICES

Release Hyper Arousal Sympathetic State

● Intense Sensations (ice, warheads, lemon/lime slice, cold
shower) Cross crawl, jumping jacks, jog in place (30-60
seconds)
● Shake off energies (arms, upper body, hips, legs, & feet)
● Smell essential oils (olfactory)

Invite in Parasympathetic
● Paired Muscle Relaxation
● Body Scan or other guided meditation
● Breathing (alternate nostril, slow-deep breathing w/ longer
exhale etc.) Yin yoga poses
● Slow neck or eye rolls with conscious breath
● Watch something that makes you laugh
● Connect with a pet or someone that feels safe and calming

Self - Soothing
● Foot massage with oil
● Massage shoulders, neck, and other areas of body
● Soothing music, essential oils, candles, etc.

Grounding Overarousal
POLYVAGAL TONING PRACTICES

Reoriente to the Therapist's Face & Voice

● “Come back to me. I’m right here with you. Notice that you’re in _______
space and that you are safe right now."
● "Notice the familiarity of this space. Can you see me here with you? Can you
feel me here with you? Look around and remember that you’re here with me,
safe, and sound. Notice it’s only a memory now."

Comparison of Textures
● Ask the client to feel the surface of the couch or chair, and describe; or feel
his/her feet on the floor, key ring, or clothing, and describe the differences in
textures.

Pillow Toss
● Play “catch” with a soft object, such as a small pillow, stuffed animal, or
balled-up tissue. If on Telehealth, have the client softly do this in 1 hand, or
from hand to hand.

Cross-Crawl Exercise (Donna Eden)

● Ask the client to stand (or stay seated) and take their elbow and opposite
knee and bring them together, alternating between the right and left sides
of their body for 1 to 2 minutes. This Applied Kinesiology exercise helps
regulate the nervous system.
