Binomial Distributions

1. Ten percent of the screws produced in a certain factory turn out to be defective. Find the probability
that in a sample of 10 screws chosen at random,
(i) Exactly two will be defective.
(ii) Atleast two will be defective
(iii) At most two will be defective
(iv) More than two will be defective
(v) Less than two will be defective
2. The probability that a man aged 60 will live to be 70 is 0.65. what is the probability that out of 10 men,
now 60, at least 7 will live to be 70.
3. A die is thrown 8 times and it is required to find the probability that 3 will show (i) Exactly 2 times (ii)
at least 7 times (iii) at least once.
4. Out of 1000 families with four children each, how many families would be expected to have:
(i) 2 boys and 2 girls (ii) at least 2 girls (iii) no boys (iv) at most 3 boys (iv) at least 1 boy.
5. On the basis of pass record it has been found that there is 70% chance of power cut in a city on any
particular day. What is probability that from the first to 10th date of the months there are 5 or more
days without power cut?
6. If 10% of bolts produced by machine are defective. Determine the probability that out of 10 bolts,
chosen at random (i) 1 (ii) none (iii) at most 2 bolts will de defective.
7. An underground mine has 5 pumps installed for pumping out storm water, the probability of any one
of the pumps failing during the storm is . What is the probability that (i) at least 2 pumps will be
working, (ii) all the pumps will be working during a particular storm?
8. Assuming that 20% of the populations of a city are literate, so that the chance of an individual being
literate is and assuming that 100 investigators each take 10 individuals to see whether they are
literate, how many investigators would you expect to report 3 or less were literate.
9. An insurance salesman sells policies to 5 men, all of identical age in good health. According to the
actuarial tables the probability the man of this particular age will be alive 30 years hence is . Gine the
probability that in 30 years. (a) All 5 men (b) at least 3 men (c) only 2 men (d) at least 1 man will be
alive.
10. Four coins were tossed 200 times. The number of tosses showing 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 heads was found to
be as under. Fit a binomial distribution to these observed results. Find the expected frequencies.
11. If mean and variance of a binomial distribution are 4 and 2 respectively, find the probability of
(i) exactly 2 successes (ii) less than 2 successes (iii) at least 2 successes.

what is the probability that (i) none is white (ii) all are white (iii) at least one is white (iv) only 2 are
white?
