OBJECTIVE
LESSON TITLE Let’s count
SKILL ACTIVITY 603 605
Warm up  Write the following sentnces and ask Ss what they all have in common. X
The cookies are in the 3rd drawer from the top”
The orange dress is the 7th one from the right.
The soccer ball is in the 4th carton from the left.

All these sentences have a thing in common, the all talk about the positions of the
objects.
 Now write the following and ask Ss what theya al have in common.
There are 5 apples on the table. X
There are 6 teachers in the theachers’ room
I have 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

PRESENTATION Ordinal numbers

 An ordinal number is a number that indicates de position or order of something in X
relation to other numbers. This order or sequence may be according to the size,
importance or any chronology.
Example in context: Ten students participated in a contest. Out of them, the top
winners were given medals and were ranked as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. In this case, the
positions: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are ordinal numbers
 On the other hand, Cardinal numbers are numbers that are used for counting. They
are also known as natural numbers or cardinals.
 A set of cardinal numbers start from 1 and goes up to infinity.

 Write the following chart

 Explain that for

the other numbers (compounds numbers) the second number is in ordinal. An we
use the hyphen.
21 = twenty-first
26= twenty-sixth
83= eighty-third
98= ninty-eighth

Ordinal or Cardinal numbers?

 Ordianal and cardinal numbers: A cardinal number is a number that denotes the
count of any object. Any natural number such as 1, 2, 3, etc., is referred to as a
cardinal number, whereas, an ordinal number is a number that denotes the
position or place of an object. For example, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc.
 C ompair: if we say, "There are 3 ants and 5 bears". This is an example of cardinal
numbers. However, if we say, "The position of the runners in the running event is
first, second, third, and so on", this represents ordinal numbers. Observe the table
given below to note the difference between cardinal numbers and ordinal
numbers.

How to use OrdinaL numbers.

 We use ordinal numbers for dates and the order of something (think ordinal =
order).
1. ‘January 15th, 2020’. If we were to say this date it would be: ‘January fifteenth,
twenty-thirteen’.
Practice
2. ‘List of students: John, Mary, Henry, Ron, Sally, Jeff, and Robert.’

Where is Henry in line? Henry is third in line.

Who is fifth in line? Sally is fifth in line.

*** When in doubt try to remember C = cardinal counting and O = ordinal ordering (dates
are used to order days… right?).

 Asks Ss to write different numbers, small and big ones. Select two SS two
write the numbers their partners are going to dictate.

How to use ordinal numbers

 We use cardinal number to:
a. answer the question: How many…?
How many students are there in the classroom? There are 40 students

WORKBOOK 2: Ss complete the workbook, then they will socialice it, check their answers
