Lesson Plan Title: Introduction to Flowcharts in ICT

Grade Level: 8th Grade

Subject: ICT (Information and Communication Technology)

Duration: 45 minutes

Objectives:

Students will be able to define what a flowchart is and its purpose in problem-solving, learn how to
create a basic flowchart using appropriate symbols and shapes, apply their understanding of flowcharts
to solve a simple problem.

Materials:

Whiteboard and markers

Computers with a flowchart software

Picture of flowchart symbols

Procedure:

Introduction and What is a flowchart? (5 minutes)

Begin the lesson by asking the students if they have ever encountered a problem that they needed to
solve. Ask them how they went about solving it. Introduce the idea of flowcharts as a tool for solving
problems.

(10 minutes)

Ask the students if they know what a flowchart is. Provide a definition: a flowchart is a graphical
representation of a process or algorithm, consisting of symbols connected by lines or arrows that
indicate the flow of information.

Flowchart symbols (10 minutes)

Hand out a sheet with examples of flowchart symbols and shapes. Go over the symbols one by one,
explaining their meaning and purpose. Show examples of how they are used in flowcharts.
Creating a basic flowchart (15 minutes)

Using a flowchart software, demonstrate how to create a basic flowchart. Start with a simple problem
that can be broken down into steps, such as "making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich." Ask the
students to participate by suggesting steps and symbols to use in the flowchart.

Practice (5 minutes)

Assign a simple problem for the students to solve using a flowchart. Provide them with a template and
ask them to use the symbols and shapes they learned to create a flowchart that solves the problem.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

Review the main points of the lesson and ask if anyone has any questions or comments. Emphasize the
importance of flowcharts as a tool for problem-solving and encourage students to use them in their
future ICT projects.

Assessment:

Observe student participation during the creation of the basic flowchart and provide feedback on their
understanding of the symbols and shapes.

Evaluate the completed flowchart assignment based on whether it effectively solves the problem and
uses appropriate symbols and shapes.
