Remote Signals Network Communications

Most Industrial Control Panels have 3 Areas to focus on for applying SPDs;
Power Inputs & Output Signals Communications

Microprocessor Based Components are used throughout the Panel.

Control Panels Enclosures can Range from very small to very large, Multi-Panel Configurations.

Because of the Industrial Environments, and often located Outside the Facility;
DIN Rail Mounted SPDs for Power Protection are preferred.

A concern is that a Panel Mounted SPD could be hit by Forklifts.

With some Production Lines, Space is Limited.

Multi-Stage Protection is a Recommended Practice

Often, the Incoming Power is 3-Phase Power, example being

277V480V Wye.

Sensitive Components are Powered 120Vac and/or 24Vdc.

These would include PLCs, HMI’s, and Ethernet Switches.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are most often powered

by 3-Phase Power. Secondary SPDs are used for the Line
Side due to being intolerant to Surges.

Control Panel I/O SPDs

The PLC, (Controller in the Panel) is looking at Inputs from Sensors and Transducers. Based on these Inputs, the
Controller will have Outputs to Perform Tasks. These Inputs & Outputs can be Digital (Switching On/Off) or Analog
type Signals.

For Digital Signals, the most common are 24Vdc and 110Vac

For Analog Signals, 4-20mA and 0-10Vdc are most common.

Almost all Control Panels have Network/Communications.

PLCs communicating to components inside the Control Panel.
The Control Panel communicates to other Systems on the Production Floor, and Administrative
Systems.

All of these wires are paths for Transients to enter the Control Panel and the PLC is at Risk.

removed. The Base for the UTBs made all more Streamlined.
387mm (15.2”) of DIN Rail was Freed.

The Cost for Implementation was $3,238 for the SPDs, and the System

Results: Since the System has been upgraded, there have been no damages to the
System. Other Systems at the Plant were experiencing Lightning related
damages.

After 2-years with no damages to this system, the SPD Upgrade was
Proven. The Facility retrofitted other Systems with SPDs

The Cost of $9,238 was much less than the $5k - $150k they were paying each year because of
the Lightning related Damages.
