Create a New Catalog If you are using Kingdom Data Management for the first time
you need to create a new catalog and then specify the
required parameters for your catalog. The Configuration
wizard will walk you through the required steps.
Connect to an Existing Catalog The application should detect if you have an existing catalog.
However, you may have moved or renamed it. Select this
option if you know where an existing catalog is.
Note: The KDM catalog schema was modified in the 2015 HF1 version to allow for 255
characters for seismic data type names. When you connect to an existing catalog in
KDM version 2015 HF1 or later, the catalog is upgraded and is not backward
compatible with earlier versions of KDM.
See Getting Started with Kingdom Data Management (KDM) for a summary of steps required
to get you up and running with Kingdom Data Management.
What is a Catalog?
A catalog is an inventory of your Kingdom projects. This inventory, or catalog, contains the
metadata of all your Kingdom projects that the Catalog Builder located in the designated
locations (specified file locations, or shared files on multiple computers).
When you launch Kingdom Data Manager for the first time, the Configuration wizard will walk
you through the required configuration steps. After you have created and configured your
KDM Catalog, you can run Catalog Builder to inventory and catalog your Kingdom projects.
Note: These same steps can also be accessed through KDM’s main menu: Tools >
Configuration.
Specify database parameters Enter your login credentials and database server for SQL
Server Express, SQL Server, or Oracle database.
Set Admin preferences Specify the location of the Kingdom installation folder. By
default Kingdom installs to C:\Program
Files\IHS\KingdomSuite. However, the Kingdom software may
be installed in a different location.
You can review or change any of your KDM Catalog configuration settings through
Configuration Tools. From the Kingdom Data Manager main menu select Tools >
Configuration.
SQL Server Express Does not required a user name and password.

Group Details—Customize
The Customize tab in the Group Details dialog box displays a list of data items that can be
displayed in the View tab for the selected group. The list of data items are listed in the figure
below:
Results View a table of the results of your query. Fields displayed are
selected in the Display Fields panel of the Create tab.
Creating a query
From the Kingdom Data Manager main menu, choose Tools > Query to open the Query
dialog box. Click the Create tab, which allows you to create queries against your Project
Catalog.
To create a query:
1. Select Data Category. The Group/Project tree is disabled until you select a category. You
can only select one category at a time.
2. Select the group or project in the tree that you want to query. You can query your entire
Project Catalog, a single group, or a single project.
3. Create a query expression. Under Create Expressions:
a. Select the first data item. The list of items is specific to the selected data category. If
you do not see the item you want listed, click the Display Fields tab.
b. Select the condition. The following conditions may need an explanation:
- For “contains”, select Like and use % (wildcard search) before and/or after the
entered string.
- <> means “Is not equal to”.
c. Click Add to add the expression to the query table.
d. If you want to preview the results so far, click Preview or Show Results.
e. Repeat a through c until all expressions have been added to the query.
f. Group the expressions if necessary. Select at least two rows (expressions) in the
query table and click the parentheses ( ) button.
g. Now link with AND OR logic. The default logical operator between expressions is
AND. To select OR:
- Highlight the first expression.
- Hold down the <Shift> key and highlight the second expression.
- Click the OR button. The word or will now replace and in the Group column.
For example: Query for formation tops belonging to authors GS with a depth between
100 and 900 from wells with a name of either Acro or Trex.
4. If you will use this query again, don’t forget to Save Query. Saved queries can be edited
on the Queries tab at any time.
You can also edit the data in the Value columns in the query table itself Just double-click
in the cell and edit the value.
Saving queries
In the Kingdom Data Manager main window, choose Tools > Query to open the Query
dialog box. You can create a query with multiple expressions, and save the query by clicking

query, and the group/Project tree. The domain or project for which the query was
created will be highlighted.
The Results tab in the Query dialog box displays the data in columnar format. This tab has
the basic functionality of the other data tabs. For more information on sorting and exporting
see Data tab overview.
Convert convert existing Kingdom project database from one database type to another.
Databases can be SQL Server, SQL Server Express, or Oracle.
Copy make an identical copy of a Kingdom project. All project files and the database
will be copied to a designated location and can be added to the Kingdom
Project Catalog.
Compare examine the similarities or differences of selected data objects between two
Kingdom projects. Available items to compare are wells, 2D and 3D seismic,
and all interpretation items.
Projects in Use You cannot convert a project if the Kingdom project is currently in use.
All authors must exit the project and the project must be closed. See
Kingdom Projects Currently in Use for a list of Windows users currently
in the project.
SQL To convert Kingdom projects with full SQL Server, the database login
account must have Create View and Create Table permissions.
SQL Server Express SQL Server Express does not require a user name and password. The
instance name will be in the following format: <computer
name>\SMTKingdom.
Copying or converting an Auto SSE project to another SQL Server
Express instance will change the project to Manual SSE.
SQL Server Express has a single database size limit of 4GB. If your
source Oracle or SQL Server database exceeds or is very close to 4GB
then your project conversion will fail.
Do not Copy Seismic The new project will use the source project’s seismic data. Links to
the source project’s seismic files will be written to the database of
the copied project. This is the default.
Copy Seismic Copy seismic files in the selected project to the new project folder
shown in the path displayed in the Path text field in the
Destination Project area.
Having multiple projects use the same source seismic data will save space; however,
unless the source seismic is in a Read Only folder, the seismic data used by multiple
projects can be deleted, edited, or moved by authors in any of the sharing projects.
Deleting, moving, or editing the source seismic will affect interpretations such as horizons
and faults created using the altered seismic.
Consider the security of the source seismic carefully before sharing seismic between
projects.
5. Specify the database information for the Destination Project:
6. Click Test Connection to test the connection to the database and server instance for the
destination project using the login credentials you entered.
7. Click Copy to begin the copy process. Depending on the size of the project, this could
take several minutes.
Comparing projects
From the Kingdom Data Manager main window, choose Projects > Compare Projects to
open the Project Compare dialog box in which you can compare the similarity or differences
of selected data objects in two specified projects.
Alternatively, in the Project Catalog dialog box, right-click a project name and select
Compare Projects.
Tip: If you do not want All categories, you can multi-select using the Shift or Ctrl key.
5. Click Compare. KDM opens the In Both Identical tab for you to begin your comparison.
6. View the results of your Project Compare for each selected data category:
• In Both Identical
• In Project A Only
• In Project B Only
• In Both with Differences
7. Like the other KDM data tabs, the Compare tabs have two views, Customize and View.
They also have sort and export functionality. See Data tab overview for more information.
Local Displays a list of .1 and .ksd files in the folder of the selected
project.
Shared-from Displays seismic files in the selected project that have been
shared from another project in Kingdom using the Surveys >
Survey Share/Copy tool
The tool is especially useful in determining if all seismic files are in accessible locations
for the project. In a network environment, this may not always be the case. Project
Explorer provides tools to accomplish the following:
Move and Relink Seismic Relink a Kingdom project to its seismic files if these files
have been moved from their original location.
Relink Seismic Move a Kingdom project’s seismic files (*.ksd and *.1) and
relink the project to the seismic files in the new location.
If a project’s seismic files are not accessible, the rows will
be pink. If you know the location of the inaccessible seismic
data, you can use the Relink Seismic tool to reconnect the
data to the project.
Please see Important notes about seismic data before moving or relinking your seismic.
Write-protect your source Seismic data used in multiple projects can be deleted, edited, or
seismic moved by authors in any of the sharing projects which would
affect interpretations in all linked projects. The source seismic
files should therefore be write protected. Only Mistie or Trace
Calculation operations require write privileges to the seismic
data.
Locate your seismic files The default location for a Kingdom project’s seismic files in the
project folder. However, seismic files can reside anywhere on the
network. Multiple users can then be linked to this single source
which can save space.
Seismic file names Kingdom seismic filenames are not project specific. Maintain
separate folders for each project.
Shared seismic and Project Explorer can only maintain the links of Kingdom projects
projects not inventoried that are in your KDM Catalog. If a project shares the selected
seismic files but has not been inventoried, then the project will
lose the connection to the seismic data.
4. Click Move and Relink to open the Move and Relink dialog box.
Linked Projects displays information about any projects in your KDM Catalog (including
projects not assigned to a group in your Project Catalog.) that also use the seismic data
that you have selected to move and relink. Project Explorer will update the seismic tables
in these projects to maintain the link.
Tip: Scroll to the right to see if the operation for each seismic file was successful.
*Illuminator seismic volumes are generated with Kingdom’s advanced horizon autopicker
Note: In your destination project, you can only select a single author. All interpretation
will be assigned to this single author. Therefore, in your source project, you may
want to transfer data one author at a time so that you can map your data author by
author.
3. Select your Destination project form the Project Catalog. The destination project name
and details are displayed on the right.
4. Select the single author to receive the interpretation data.
5. Click Transfer to start the Copy Manager where you will select the data items you want to
transfer. It may take a few seconds for the Copy Manager to start.
The Copy Manager and OpenSpirit Data Selector are OpenSpirit (OSP) tools.
Note: *OpenSpirit assigns all of the Kingdom horizons and faults to a default domain in time
or depth. Select DEPTH Earth Model and TIME Earth Model for both horizons and
faults.
In addition to the Copy Data tabs described above, the dialog box includes the following
feilds:
Log Directory Displays the default location for the log directory. This log is created
after the data transfer and records the status of each transferred
item.
The log also opens automatically when the data transfer is complete.
Destination Project You can click Select Project to view projects in the current
OpenSpirit session. However, you should not need to change the
destination project.
Data Store Type This information is read only and is populated by OpenSpirit.
After you select the data categories, click OK to open the OpenSpirit Data Selector.
Note: Click the Help icon for definitions of individual items, or select Help > Data Selector
Help to access OpenSpirit’s help documentation.
Note: You can only select data from the categories and items that you selected in the
Copy Manager.
To define a bounding box within the project from which to transfer data, see Data Transfer
within a Bounding Box
2. .Save current configuration? Accept the default or select a new File name and Save in
location and click Save.
3. The CopySync Jobs report opens which tracks the status of the data transfer job(s).
When the job is finished, click Close.
4. View the Data Copy Service Report which lists the status of all copied data. If the Data
Copy Service report does not open, you can open it from the Kingdom Data Manager
Reports menu:
• Close the Transfer Data dialog box with the X in the upper right corner and click
Reports > Data Transfer in the Kingdom Manager.
• Click Browse which should open the Log Directory. Select the *<date and
time>.html file for the current job.
7. In the Data Selector toolbar click the General Preferences icon as in the figure above.
8. In General Preferences, check Use Session Coordinate System and click OK.
9. In the Data Selector, choose the Well Bore tab and then click the Data Scope icon in the
toolbar.
10. Under Spatial Filter select Bounding Box.
11. In Bounding Box Selection enter the XY coordinates for the Lower Left and Upper
Right corners of the subset area. Click OK.
