When you launch Kingdom Data Management for the first time, you have 2 options:

Create a New Catalog If you are using Kingdom Data Management for the first time
you need to create a new catalog and then specify the
required parameters for your catalog. The Configuration
wizard will walk you through the required steps.

Connect to an Existing Catalog The application should detect if you have an existing catalog.
However, you may have moved or renamed it. Select this
option if you know where an existing catalog is.

Note: The KDM catalog schema was modified in the 2015 HF1 version to allow for 255
characters for seismic data type names. When you connect to an existing catalog in
KDM version 2015 HF1 or later, the catalog is upgraded and is not backward
compatible with earlier versions of KDM.

See Getting Started with Kingdom Data Management (KDM) for a summary of steps required
to get you up and running with Kingdom Data Management.

What is a Catalog?
A catalog is an inventory of your Kingdom projects. This inventory, or catalog, contains the
metadata of all your Kingdom projects that the Catalog Builder located in the designated
locations (specified file locations, or shared files on multiple computers).
When you launch Kingdom Data Manager for the first time, the Configuration wizard will walk
you through the required configuration steps. After you have created and configured your
KDM Catalog, you can run Catalog Builder to inventory and catalog your Kingdom projects.

Select Locations to make changes.

Select Global Seismic File Locations

KDM’s Data Transfer tool provides bulk Kingdom to Kingdom data transfer ability. The default
location for the Kingdom seismic files (*.1 and *.ksd) is the individual project folders.
However, you can also set a global seismic file location when transferring seismic data. The
seismic files will be written to the set location inside project specific folders.
If the Global Seismic File Locator is set, this location replaces the Kingdom project folder as
the default location for seismic files when using the Data Transfer tool.

To add a global seismic file location:

1. Click Add and browse to the first global seismic file location. The file path and name will
appear in the dialog box.
The number to the left of the file is the maximum capacity permitted on the selected
drive. Once the space used on the selected drive reaches this number, further seismic
files will be saved to the next specified location. The default capacity is 90%.
2. Change the maximum capacity if desired. Select the location, and then adjust the
maximum capacity %(Percent) by either entering a value in the % field, or by selecting the
desired percent using the arrows. Click Update to see the change.
3. Add more locations. Click Add and browse to additional global seismic file locations.
4. To re-order a location select it in the list and then use the large up and down arrows to
change its position.

5. To remove a location from the list, select the location and click Remove.

Note: Once you have set global seismic file locations, all seismic files transferred with
the Data Transfer tool will be written into this location. To change back to the
default of writing the seismic files to the Kingdom project directory, return to the
Global Seismic File Location dialog box and Remove all locations.

Catalog Builder
Locate and inventory Kingdom projects
After you have created and configured your KDM Catalog, you can locate and inventory
Kingdom projects with the Catalog Builder. The Catalog Builder will find projects in multiple
directory locations and can read SQL Server Express, SQL Server, or Oracle project
databases.
When Catalog Builder inventories a project, it extracts the project metadata from the Kingdom
project database (wells, seismic surveys, and interpretation data—contours, faults, grids,
horizons and formation tops) and stores the metadata in the KDM Catalog.

The Catalog Builder Toolbar provides the following tools:

Project Locations Add the directories that contain the Kingdom projects. Select the file
directories or computer(s) that have Kingdom projects.

Database Servers Kingdom projects that have SQL Server or Oracle databases need to be
registered. You will need the instance name, user name, and password for the
servers. SQL Server Express databases do not need to be registered.

Inventory Report View, Print, and Save Inventory Report. An Inventory Report is available after
Catalog Builder has located and inventoried your Kingdom projects.

© 2017 IHS Markit. All Rights Reserved. 23

Start Start the inventory of your projects. The results will be displayed in the main
Project panel.
If no results are displayed, check the bottom status bar. If the computer(s) you
specified to Catalog Builder are down or not shared, then the following
message will appear in the bottom status bar: <Computer Name > is down
or has no shared folders

To inventory your Kingdom projects:

1. Launch the Catalog Builder from the Kingdom Data Management main window. Select
Tools > Catalog Builder.
2. Add directory locations for Kingdom projects—if Folders is your search mode, select the
file directories that have Kingdom projects.
3. Add Kingdom database servers—if any of your Kingdom projects are in SQL Server or
Oracle databases you need to input the user name and password information.
4. Select a Search Mode and Inventory Mode:

Search Mode Options include:

• Folders—click Project Locations on the toolbar and add Kingdom
project directories.
• Computers—select computers with shared folders on the network.
All computers on your network will be displayed.

Inventory Mode Options include:

• Project List Only—locates all Kingdom projects on the designated
drives and list them in the right Project panel. Catalog Builder does
not inventory the projects. All folders with a .tks file are listed, but have
Not Inventoried as the Status.
• Partial—inventories each project, but does not inventory formation
tops. If formation tops are not required, excluding formation tops will
save time and space.
• Full—inventories each project. The success of the inventory—
SUCCEED or FAILED—is listed beside each project.

5. Click Start to begin the inventory.

6. View Search Results and Inventory Report. If you have projects that failed to inventory,
see Reasons for failed inventories.
7. Assign Projects to your Project Catalog.

Add directory locations for Kingdom projects

Select the file directories or computer(s) that have Kingdom projects. After you have selected
the locations, you can search and inventory all directories or computers at once, or you can
select to search and inventory just specific locations.

24 © 2017 IHS Markit. All Rights Reserved.

Note: The Catalog Builder can only read shared file locations.

From the Kingdom Catalog Builder, click Project Locations on the Taskbar.

Add click to open the Browse For Folder dialog box and navigate to a directory
with the Kingdom projects you want to inventory.

Remove Select a location (row) and click Remove.

Shared Environment Considerations

In shared environments, we recommend that you define your search locations with the
Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path beginning at the network, or domain level. A
search location defined by the full UNC path will identify the specific computer by name
thereby giving each Kingdom project a unique path and identification.

Add Kingdom database servers

Kingdom Catalog Builder requires database server information to connect to the project
databases. If a server is not registered, Catalog Builder will not be able to open the
connection necessary for an inventory of projects located on the server. Prior to running
Kingdom Catalog Builder, the list of servers should be updated to include all available servers
and ensure a successful inventory of all desired projects.
Before you can register a new server instance, you will have to obtain the server instance
name, user name, and password information from the database administrator.

© 2017 IHS Markit. All Rights Reserved. 25

SQL Server Express
The SMTKINGDOM SQL Server Express instance does not need to be registered. This
applies to both Auto SSE and Manual SSE projects.
The name of this instance is <computer name>\SMTKINGDOM. The following username and
password is coded into the instance:
- Username: smtkingdom
- Password: $ei$micMicro

SQL Server Windows Authentication

Kingdom Data Management requires SQL Server authentication. If you log in to your projects
with Windows authentication, you will need to get the SQL Server authentication user name
and password from the database administrator and enter these credentials in Catalog
Builder > Database Servers.
1. From the Catalog Builder toolbar, click Database Servers.
.

2. Select your server type: SQL Server or Oracle.

3. Click the down arrow and select the server instance.
4. Enter your user name and password.
5. Click Test Connection to confirm connectivity with the server.

26 © 2017 IHS Markit. All Rights Reserved.

6. If the test is successful, click Add to register the database connection.
• Remove—select to remove the registration information for the instance or user
highlighted in the Kingdom Database Servers tree. Note that this does not affect the
actual database.

Note: The SMTKingdom instance of SQL Server Express has the following username
and password pre-configured. The password is caps sensitive:

Username: SMTKingdom
Password: $ei$micMicro

Note: If the Catalog Builder was unable to connect with the server using the information
entered, then a Database Connection Unsuccessful message appears.
Check that the information entered is correct, that the server is turned on, and
retry.

Reasons for failed inventories

To see the reason a project failed to inventory, double-click on the word Failed to open the
error message. You can also open the Inventory Report. In the Catalog Builder toolbar, click
Inventory Report.
The most common reasons that a project fails to inventory are the following:

Password or Database is not Available Error The database cannot be accessed.

Files are Missing Error The project (*.tks) file or database

(<project name>.xml) file cannot be found

TKS Version Error The project is in a version of Kingdom

software earlier than 7.5.

Microsoft Access Projects KDM cannot inventory projects with an

Access database. You will have to
convert the database first by opening in
the current version of Kingdom.

If the status is Not Inventoried, this is not a failed inventory. It is a choice you made by
selecting List Only as the inventory mode. The project names and paths are listed, but the
metadata is not extracted.

Password or Database is not Available Error

To successfully inventory Kingdom projects, all the database servers that hold Kingdom
projects must be registered. If the database servers cannot be accessed, the Password or
Database is not Available error opens.
For a successful inventory of all Kingdom projects, ensure that all servers on which Kingdom
projects are stored are registered.

© 2017 IHS Markit. All Rights Reserved. 27

Click Database Servers in the toolbar to register additional databases.

Files are Missing Error

If a Kingdom project directory is missing a required file, or a required file is corrupted, the
<project name and path>.xml Files are missing error message will be displayed:
The Catalog Builder has found some inconsistency with the <project name>.tks
file and the database pointer file (<project name>.xml). Open the project
folder and examine your files for possible naming errors or missing files.

TKS Version Error

If Kingdom Data Manager tries to inventory a Kingdom project in a Kingdom software version
earlier than 7.5, the TKS Version error message displays.
To inventory this project, open it with a Kingdom software version 7.5 or later, and reinventory
using the Catalog Builder.

View, Print, and Save Inventory Report

The Catalog Builder Inventory Report lists the following information for each project
inventoried for the last search operation:

Project file location Displays the full path and file name.

Database type SQL Server or Oracle. SQL Server Express projects are listed
as SQL Server

Inventory status Successful or Failed

Search mode Folder or Computer

Search date includes date mm/dd/yyyy and time hh:mm:ss am or pm

Search message Gives a Succeed to Register message or the error message if

the project inventory status was Failed.

You can filter by Status, Search mode, or Database type. Click the down arrow beside the
desired field(s), select the item and you want to search by and click Search.
You can then Print, and/or Export the report (to Excel, or as a PDF) by clicking the
corresponding icon in the toolbar.

Convert, Copy, Compare Projects
KDM makes converting and copying Oracle and SQL projects simple and efficient. This
section discusses the following:

Convert convert existing Kingdom project database from one database type to another.
Databases can be SQL Server, SQL Server Express, or Oracle.

Copy make an identical copy of a Kingdom project. All project files and the database
will be copied to a designated location and can be added to the Kingdom
Project Catalog.

Compare examine the similarities or differences of selected data objects between two
Kingdom projects. Available items to compare are wells, 2D and 3D seismic,
and all interpretation items.

Important notes on converting and copying projects

If you want to convert or copy your project to SQL Server or Oracle, you will need the server
instance, user name, and password for the specified database. See your database
administrator if you do not have this information.
If you are copying a project into a multi-project database, at least one project in that database
must have been upgraded to the current version of Kingdom..

Projects in Use You cannot convert a project if the Kingdom project is currently in use.
All authors must exit the project and the project must be closed. See
Kingdom Projects Currently in Use for a list of Windows users currently
in the project.

Oracle Kingdom requires Oracle project administrators to have CREATE

TABLE, CREATE VIEW, and CREATE TRIGGER system privileges to
create and upgrade projects.

SQL To convert Kingdom projects with full SQL Server, the database login
account must have Create View and Create Table permissions.

SQL Server Express SQL Server Express does not require a user name and password. The
instance name will be in the following format: <computer
name>\SMTKingdom.
Copying or converting an Auto SSE project to another SQL Server
Express instance will change the project to Manual SSE.
SQL Server Express has a single database size limit of 4GB. If your
source Oracle or SQL Server database exceeds or is very close to 4GB
then your project conversion will fail.

Copying Kingdom projects

Copying Kingdom projects

Copying project databases requires database permissions that only database administrators
have been granted. Before you begin, please see Important notes on converting and copying
projects.
Copy Project makes an identical copy of the project folder and the project database. You can
copy the database into another instance of the same database type (SQL Server, SQL Server
Express, or Oracle) or you can copy the database to a different database type.

Do not Copy Seismic The new project will use the source project’s seismic data. Links to
the source project’s seismic files will be written to the database of
the copied project. This is the default.

Copy Seismic Copy seismic files in the selected project to the new project folder
shown in the path displayed in the Path text field in the
Destination Project area.

Having multiple projects use the same source seismic data will save space; however,
unless the source seismic is in a Read Only folder, the seismic data used by multiple
projects can be deleted, edited, or moved by authors in any of the sharing projects.
Deleting, moving, or editing the source seismic will affect interpretations such as horizons
and faults created using the altered seismic.
Consider the security of the source seismic carefully before sharing seismic between
projects.
5. Specify the database information for the Destination Project:
6. Click Test Connection to test the connection to the database and server instance for the
destination project using the login credentials you entered.
7. Click Copy to begin the copy process. Depending on the size of the project, this could
take several minutes.

Managing your Kingdom seismic files
Project Explorer
From the Kingdom Data Manager main window, choose Projects > Project Explorer to
view the current directories and files for the project selected in the Project Catalog. You can
also right click the project in the catalog and select Project Explorer.
Project Explorer is a useful tool in helping you understand the layout, completeness and
integrity of an inventoried Kingdom project. For each file in the project, Project Explorer lists
the size, type, date modified, and accessibility of the file. This is especially useful when
project files are not located in the project folder such as author folders and seismic data.
This tool shows the following:
• the locations of all author folders, including external author folders
• the location and contents of the main project directory
• the location and accessibility of the project’s seismic data, including the local project
directory, external directories, and shared locations. The seismic data falls into 4
categories:

Local Displays a list of .1 and .ksd files in the folder of the selected
project.

External Displays a list of seismic files in the selected project that

reside in an external location. This seismic may or may not be
used by another project

Shared-from Displays seismic files in the selected project that have been
shared from another project in Kingdom using the Surveys >
Survey Share/Copy tool

Shared-to Displays the remote location of files belonging to external

authors (authors with folders outside the project directory)

The tool is especially useful in determining if all seismic files are in accessible locations
for the project. In a network environment, this may not always be the case. Project
Explorer provides tools to accomplish the following:

Move and Relink Seismic Relink a Kingdom project to its seismic files if these files
have been moved from their original location.

Relink Seismic Move a Kingdom project’s seismic files (*.ksd and *.1) and
relink the project to the seismic files in the new location.
If a project’s seismic files are not accessible, the rows will
be pink. If you know the location of the inaccessible seismic
data, you can use the Relink Seismic tool to reconnect the
data to the project.

Please see Important notes about seismic data before moving or relinking your seismic.

Tip: Adjust column widths, move columns, and sort the data ascending or descending by
any column to customize the data table.

Important notes about seismic data

Before moving your seismic data, please consider the following important notes:

Write-protect your source Seismic data used in multiple projects can be deleted, edited, or
seismic moved by authors in any of the sharing projects which would
affect interpretations in all linked projects. The source seismic
files should therefore be write protected. Only Mistie or Trace
Calculation operations require write privileges to the seismic
data.

Locate your seismic files The default location for a Kingdom project’s seismic files in the
project folder. However, seismic files can reside anywhere on the
network. Multiple users can then be linked to this single source
which can save space.

Seismic file names Kingdom seismic filenames are not project specific. Maintain
separate folders for each project.

Shared seismic and Project Explorer can only maintain the links of Kingdom projects
projects not inventoried that are in your KDM Catalog. If a project shares the selected
seismic files but has not been inventoried, then the project will
lose the connection to the seismic data.

Project in use Kingdom Data Manager will not Move and Relink seismic if the
Kingdom project is currently in use. All authors must exit the
project and the project must be closed. See Kingdom Projects
Currently in Use for a list of Windows users currently in the
project.

Move and Relink Seismic

Please see Important notes about seismic data before moving or relinking your seismic.

To move and relink your seismic:

1. Right-click the project in your Kingdom Catalog and select Project Explorer.
2. In the left pane of the Project Explorer window, expand the Seismic directory, and select
the seismic files you want to relocate (Local, External, or Shared-to).
3. In the right pane, select the seismic files.

4. Click Move and Relink to open the Move and Relink dialog box.
Linked Projects displays information about any projects in your KDM Catalog (including
projects not assigned to a group in your Project Catalog.) that also use the seismic data
that you have selected to move and relink. Project Explorer will update the seismic tables
in these projects to maintain the link.

5. Browse to the designated destination location of the seismic being moved.
6. Click Move and Relink to begin the move and relink process.

Move and Relink Report

The Move and Relink Seismic operation generates a Move and Relink report which lists the
seismic files selected for relocation. Three Export options are available:
• Save as a Microsoft Excel*.xls spreadsheet
• Save as a text *.csv file
• Open in Microsoft Excel

Tip: Scroll to the right to see if the operation for each seismic file was successful.

Relink Seismic
The first thing you need to do is determine if any of the project’s seismic files are not
accessible.
Right click the project in your Kingdom Catalog and select Project Explorer.
If the seismic files are not accessible, then No is displayed in the Accessible column and the
seismic files are highlighted in orange. The seismic database record cannot be matched to a
.1 or .ksd file. The seismic files may have been moved through Windows, not Project
Explorer.
If you know the new location of the seismic, then you can easily relink the seismic with
Project Explorer.

Transfer Data
Transferring data with KDM
Kingdom is an OpenSpirit-enabled data store. Kingdom Data Manager’s Transfer Project
Data tool enables one-step Kingdom to Kingdom data transfer without the need for manual
file transfer. This transfer tool transfers well, seismic and interpretation data between
Kingdom projects and allows you to convert unit, coordinate, and attribute values on the fly
based on the requirements of the destination (target) project.

Requirements for transferring data

• Both Kingdom projects must be updated to the same version before using the transfer
tool. Projects are automatically updated when opened in the new version of Kingdom.
• After updating the projects, both projects must be re inventoried. Right click the project in
the Project Catalog tree and select Refresh Inventory.
• Both source and destination projects must have defined projection systems.
• If your projects are very large, the time required to start the OpenSpirit data service might
be affected. You may want to extend the length of time before the OpenSpirit data service
times out by specifying an environment variable. How you access the environmental
variables depends on your operating system.
a. Click New under System variables
b. Enter the variable name: SMT_EMBEDDED_STARTUP_TIMEOUT
c. Enter a variable value in seconds. Without the variable, the value is 75 seconds.
For example, a value of 120 will extend the timeout to 120 seconds.
You do not have to reboot, but you will need to close and reopen the application.

What the Data Transfer tool does not transfer

The KDM Transfer Data tool does not transfer the following objects:

Time slice volumes Cultures

Illuminator seismic volumes* Contours

Raster logs Fault polygons

*Illuminator seismic volumes are generated with Kingdom’s advanced horizon autopicker

To transfer data with KDM:

1. Select the projects and authors
2. Selecting data in the OSP Copy Manager
3. OpenSpirit Data Selector
