Direct Connect
Direct Connect enables you to import well and production data from the Enerdeq Browser
directly into Kingdom. You can import any combination of well, allocated production, and
unallocated production data into existing projects or into new projects. The data available for
you to import depends on your IHS Markit subscription. Note that international subscribers
can only import well data. Direct Connect only imports production data for wells that are part
of your Kingdom project.
Tip: View Direct Connect videos posted on the IHS Kingdom website.
To successfully connect to the Video Library, make sure you have selected to Use
online help in the Help Center. You can also access the full Video Library by clicking
the Knowledge Base and Videos link on the Help Center.
Creating Jobs Create and run jobs based on Enerdeq queries that you have already
created, or queries that you create using Direct Connect.
Creating Jobs for the US
Creating Jobs for International Data
Managing Jobs Once you create jobs, you can manage job schedules and view job
statuses. For completed jobs, you can also view reports that provide
detailed information about the results of each job.
Datum IHS Markit data uses the NAD27 datum or the WGS84 datum, depending
Transformations on whether you are importing US well and production data or international
well data. If the project into which you are importing data uses a different
datum, Direct Connect prompts you to transform the imported data into the
project’s datum. This may be a single- or two-step process, depending on
the project’s datum.
Processing Data Direct Connect processes the data before importing it into Kingdom to
ensure Kingdom can utilize the data.

Logging On
Wells > Import > Direct Connect
The first time you log on to Direct Connect to create a job or query, you need to select a data
source and provide a user name and password. These are the same credentials you use to
connect to Enerdeq Browser directly. You can connect to either the U.S. or International IHS
web site. You select the web site to connect to and provide the appropriate credentials.
Once you are logged on to Direct Connect, the Create Job window indicates what data
source you are connected to in the upper right corner by displaying either “US” or
“International.” To switch to a different data source, click the name of the current data source.
If you have previously logged on to the new data source, Direct Connect automatically
reconnects using the previously provided credentials. Otherwise, Direct Connect prompts you
for your user name and password.
If you can’t log on, contact Customer Care.

Understanding How Direct Connect Processes Well and Production Data
Note: If your credentials change for any reason, Direct Connect will prompt you to enter
your new credentials.
4. Select the corresponding check boxes to define the type of data you want to import into
Kingdom. You can select any combination of well data, allocated production data, and
unallocated production data. For well data, you can also select the specific types of well
data you want to import. By default, all well data types are selected. For more information
about how Direct Connect handles well and production data, see Understanding How
Direct Connect Processes Well and Production Data.
Direct Connect only imports production data for wells that are part of your Kingdom
project. You cannot import production data into a project that has no wells. If your query
includes well data, Direct Connect imports the well data before it imports any production
data. This ensures any production data for the wells in your query is also imported. If you
are importing production data into an empty project, Direct Connect only imports
production data related to any wells that are also part of the query.
5. Choose whether to truncate any well API/UWI numbers in the data to 12 characters (the
default is a14-digit well API/UWI number).
Truncating UWI numbers may result in duplicate UWI numbers in the project. Should this
occur, Kingdom retains the first well data imported into Kingdom from IHS. Since
Kingdom sorts well data by 14-digit UWI number in ascending order prior to importing and
truncating, data imported for any well with a duplicate 12-digit UWI number is always
based on the well with the lowest 14-digit UWI number prior to truncation to 12 digits. This
is always the 00 well (12-digit UWI + 00). If your project has well data for a subsequent
well number (12-digit duplicate UWI + 01 or greater), this data is ignored.
6. Select the method you want to use for importing the data. Your choices include the
following:
• Add and Update: Adds new wells in the query that are not in the project and updates
existing well data. This is the default.
• Add New: Adds new wells in the query that are not in the project. Existing well data is
not updated.
• Update existing: Updates well data for existing wells only. Ignores any new wells in
the query that are not in the project.
Note: If you are importing allocated or unallocated production data, any new or
updated production data is imported into your project regardless of the import
method you select. This includes production data for new wells added to your
project with the query or new production data for wells already in your project
that did not have any previous production data.
7. If you are importing formation tops, choose whether to limit the formation top data to
specific IHS sources. Select the check box next to each data source you want to include.
8. If you are importing formation tops, choose whether to update any formation tops already
in your project with the correct formation top name. This option replaces old IHS
formation top names, which were only abbreviations, with the correct formation top
names. If you do not select this option you could end up with duplicate formation tops.
9. If you are importing production data, you have the option to put all production data for
each borehole into the initial completion. To do this, select the Load production data
into initial completion option.
10. If you want to include the alternate UWI number for the boreholes you are importing,
select the Import Alternate UWI option.
11. Choose whether to limit the data you import to a specified set of bounds. You can limit
data according to the project bounds, an area you digitize on the base map, or by custom
bounds you enter using either X/Y or Lat/Long values. This option is turned off by default.
a. If you click Use Project Bounds, Direct Connect uses the bounds of the current
project to define the wells for which it will query data.
b. If you click Digitize on Base Map, then draw a rectangle on the base map
surrounding the wells you are interested in.
c. If you click Use Custom Bounds, then provide the X/Y or Lat/Long coordinates for
the area of interest. If you select Lat/Long, you must also specify whether these
coordinates are shown as DD or DMS.
12. If you want, select a query to use to locate data in the database. Select All existing to
pick a query you have already created on the IHS web site or select New well query to
create a new query. For more information about creating new queries, see Creating
Queries for US Jobs.
Note: If you want to filter the list of available queries to include only queries for a
particular type of data, select the corresponding button above the query list.
13. If you want, select Subsets to display a list of available subsets, then select one or more
subsets to use for your query. Selecting subsets limits query results to wells contained in
the selected subsets.
14. Provide a name for the job you are creating in the Job Name field. Direct Connect
provides a default name that you can modify as needed.
15. If you want to preview the data that the query retrieves before saving and scheduling the
job, click Preview. This opens the Job Preview window. For more information about
previewing a job, see Previewing Jobs.
16. Click Create, and then choose whether to run your job now, schedule it for a later time, or
simply save the job. If you choose to save the job, you can always schedule it to run at
another time.
Note: You may have the option to connect directly to a database that is internal to your
company rather than accessing the Enerdeq database. If that is the case, you can
configure Direct Connect to use this internal database by clicking the Direct
Connect Settings button in the lower left corner and entering the URL to the
internal server.
To switch to a different window, click the Home button in the lower left corner to return to the
Home window or click the window selector to switch to the Manage or View window.

IHS_GDS GDS tops are interpreted formation tops for the following US regions:
• From west Texas north through North Dakota in several basins
• Gulf coast formations from south Texas through western Florida
• Offshore Texas and Louisiana shelf formations
Formation tops are picked from logs using the same consistent
methodology by experienced geologists.
IHS_GCS GCS tops are interpreted formation tops for the following US regions:
• South and East Texas
• Northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas
• Southern and western Mississippi and southwestern Alabama
Formation tops are picked from logs using the same consistent
methodology by experience geologists.
IHS_DRLR DRLR tops are extracted from driller’s logs. Measurements are often
based on the observed changes in the speed of the drill bit, or
changes in the samples brought to the surface.
IHS_SPL SPL tops are taken from rock samples such as cores.
Note: If you have a production-only subscription to IHS well data, any well queries you
attempt to run will not return any data. Be sure you are using a production query in
any query-based jobs you run with Direct Connect. (You must create production
queries on the IHS web site and any production queries you create there available in
Direct Connect.) Query types are indicated by an icon next to the query name in the
Create Job window. You can also filter the list of queries by query type by clicking the
corresponding Filter button.
Each query includes one or more query statements. Each query statement is comprised of a
property, an operator, and a value. The property corresponds to specific kind of information in
the IHS well and production database, the operator is the logical evaluation you want to
perform on the property, and the value is what you use to make the logical evaluation. For
example:
You can join multiple query statements together using both AND as well as OR. If you join two
query statements together using OR, Direct Connect pairs these statements together as a
single element in the overall query and joins it to any other query statements using AND. For
example:
Last Activity Date is greater than OR equal to 1/1/2011
AND
State is equal to Texas OR State is equal to Louisiana
AND
Operator is equal to ACME Petroleum
Since Direct Connect treats statements joined by OR as a single paired element in the query,
they are always restricted to the same value for the property in both statements. For
example, Direct Connect permits you to create a query statement such as “State is equal to
Texas OR State is equal to Louisiana,” since the property is “State” in both statements. You
cannot use Direct Connect to create a query statement such as “State is equal to Texas OR
Operator is equal to ACME Petroleum” since the property is not the same in both statements.
When creating a query, certain operators make it possible to look up matching values in the
database as you create the query. These operators include:
• Starts with
• Does not start with
• Contains
• Does not contain
If you select one of these operators, type a partial value in the Value field, and then click the
down arrow at the end of the Value field, Kingdom displays a list of any entries in the
database that are a partial match to what you typed. For example, if you select Country as
the Property, Starts with as the Operator, and type “So” in the Value field, the list of possible
matches will contain country names in the database that start with “So,” such as the Solomon
Islands and South Sudan.
To create a query:
1. From the Direct Connect Home window, click Create.
2. If prompted, provide your US IHS credentials.
3. Click New well query.
4. Select the property you want and the operator you want in the Property and Operator
fields.
5. Enter the value you want in the Value field.
6. If you want to join this statement into a single paired element joined by OR, click OR and
then complete the Operator and Value fields for the new statement. The Property field
value is the same as in the paired statement and cannot be changed.
7. If you want to add another statement to the query, click AND, and then complete the
Property, Operator, and Value fields for the new statement.
8. Continue adding statements to the query and join them using AND and OR as needed.
9. To delete a statement from the query, click on the statement in the query window and then
click Delete.
10. If you want to validate the results of your query before saving it or running it, click
Preview. This opens the Job Preview window, where you can see the number of records
resulting from your query and some sample data from the query. You can also display a
preview of a map with the locations of the wells in the query results.
11. Once you have defined the query you want, enter a name for the query in the Query
Name field, and then click Save. If you exit the Create Job window before saving your
query, you will lose the query.
12. Confirm the name of the job in the Name field, and then click Create. You have the option
to run the job now, simply save the job, or schedule the job to run at a later time.

After you create a job, you have the option to run the job immediately, schedule the job to run
at a later time, or simply save the job. To schedule a newly created job, click Create in the
Create Job window and then enter a date you want the job to run. To schedule saved job or a
job that has run previously, in the Manage window click the Schedule Job column for the job
you want to schedule. The default time for all jobs is 12:00 am. To select a date and time from
a calendar, click the Calendar button next to the date field.
Kingdom does not need to be open to run scheduled jobs. However, you must be logged on
to your computer. If you scheduled a job to run and it did not run, it may be because you were
not logged on to your computer at the time the job was scheduled to run. The job may also
not have run if the Kingdom Scheduling Service (KingdomSchedulingService.exe) is
not running. Although this service runs by default, you may need to confirm that it is running
on your computer if scheduled jobs fail to run. To restart the Kingdom Scheduling Service,
restart Direct Connect.

Previewing Jobs
You can preview the results of a query before saving and scheduling the job that will run the
query. This enables you quickly evaluate the results of the query to be sure you are importing
the data you want.
To preview a job, click Preview on the Create Job window. This opens the Job Preview
window, which consists of a data preview and a map. The data preview indicates the number
of records in the query segmented by type. For example, if your query includes well data as
well as allocated and unallocated production data, the data preview displays an icon for each
type of data with a number next to the icon indicating the number of records for that type of
data. The data preview also includes a small sample of the data that your query returns.
Click Populate Map to display a map with the wells that are in your query. The preview map
also includes any existing wells within the project. Existing wells are indicated in black and
new wells from the query are indicated in red. You can pan, zoom in and out, and reset the
map. You can also turn on and off several layers within the map to customize what the map
displays:
• Preview Wells (any new wells in the query that are not yet imported into your project -
shown in red)
• Project Wells (wells that are already part of your project - shown in black)
• Bing Map WMS Layer
• XY
• Latitude/Longitude
The preview map always displays the data that your query returns from the IHS server. The
method you select for importing the data into your Kingdom project (Add and Update, Add
New, Update Only) does not affect what the preview map displays. For more information
about data importing methods, see Creating Jobs for the US.

To schedule a previously run job to run again, click in the Schedule Job column for the job
you want and select the date and time you want the job to run again. You can also click Run
to run the job immediately. If you choose to start a job immediately and another job is already
in progress, the job you are attempting to start remains in a pending status until the current
job completes.
To run the job again but only include any new or updated records in the query results since
the last time the job was run, click Update. This option can result in much faster job
processing depending on the amount of data that has changed since the last time the job was
run.
To use an existing job as a template for creating a new job, select the job you want to use as
a template in the list and then click Use as Template. This opens the Create Job from
Template window, where you can modify the previous job settings and then run the new job
or schedule the new job to run at a later time.
Note: You cannot save two jobs with the same name. A new job you create from a previous
job requires a new job name.
For US jobs, you can modify job settings but you cannot edit queries using Direct
Connect. To edit an existing query, you must do so on the US IHS web site.
You can also delete jobs from the list by selecting the job and then clicking Delete. This
deletes the job from Direct Connect. You cannot delete a job if it is currently running.
Deleting a job cannot be undone. Deleting a job removes any scheduled occurrences for the
job to run and also deletes the job history from the Reports window.
To filter the list of completed jobs by name or by the last successful run, click the filter icons
available in the Name and Last Successful Run column heads. You can use these filters to
help you locate a particular job.

Failed jobs remain in this list until you remove them. To remove a job from the list, select the
job and then click Remove. This does not delete the job from Direct Connect; it remains in
the All Jobs list. To remove all failed jobs from the list, click Remove All.
To filter the list of failed jobs by name or by status, click the filter icons available in the Name
and Status column heads. You can use these filters to help you locate a particular job.

Pending Jobs that are scheduled to run but have not yet started.
Completed jobs that have completed successfully without any errors. The job
finished and all data was successfully imported into Kingdom.
Completed jobs are shown in the Completed Jobs list.
Completed with Jobs that have completed successfully but not all the data was
Errors successfully imported into Kingdom. This typically occurs when some
portion of the data you are attempting to import cannot be processed by
Kingdom. To find out more about why the data produced errors, click
Show Reports. To learn more about failed data in jobs, see Reject
Report. Jobs that have completed with errors are shown in the
Completed Jobs list.
Partially Completed Jobs that failed before they were able to complete. Possible causes for
partially completed jobs include a loss of connectivity or unexpected
interruptions in the software. In most cases, you can resume a partially
completed job from the point where it failed by clicking Resume. This
prevents you from having to run the entire job again. The reason for the
job failure is indicated below the job name when you select the job in the
Failed Jobs list. To find out more about what data was imported by the
job, click Show Reports. For more information about reports, see
Viewing Job Reports.
Failed Jobs that failed to run at all. The reason for the job failure is indicated
below the job name when you select the job in the Failed Jobs list.
Failed jobs display in the Failed Jobs list. Failed jobs do not have a
Reject report since no data was imported into Kingdom.

Summary Report
Every job in Direct Connect has a Summary report. The Summary report shows basic
information about each job, segmented by data type. The report includes the following
information:
• Added: The number of records added to the project.
• Updated: The number of records updated in the project.
• Data Errors: The number of records with errors, such as unprocessed data. Any valid
data for a given record with errors is still imported into Kingdom. Unprocessed data may
be valid data in the IHS database, but it is not data that can be used by the Kingdom
database.
• Locked: The number of records that were only partially updated in your project due to a
lock on one or more well properties in Kingdom.
• Skipped: The number of records skipped when adding or updating. Records are skipped
depending on the import method you selected. For example, if you chose the option to
only add new wells to the project, any wells in the query that are already in your project
are skipped. Records are also skipped if the query results include production data for
wells that are not part of the project. You cannot add well production data unless the well
is part of the project.

Reject Report
If Direct Connect cannot import data in a job into your project, Direct Connect creates a
Reject report for the job. Note that data that cannot be imported into Kingdom may be valid
data in the IHS database, but it is not data that can be used by the Kingdom database. For
example, Kingdom cannot import data about well linings or casings without a defined depth,
though this data is valid in the IHS database without a defined depth.
The Reject report consists of two parts: a tabbed display of errors grouped by well property
and a detailed report. The Well, Production Allocated, and Production Unallocated tabs
indicate both the number of data elements with errors, as well as the number of wells affected
by the rejected data for each well property (the two production-related tabs apply to US data
only). For example, you could have a job with 25 test perforation errors but only 18 wells
where those test perforation errors occur. The bar chart on each tab shows data that was not
imported with each bar representing the number of rejected data elements for a particular
well property. Each tab also displays the total number of failed wells in the imported data.
A detailed version of the Reject report indicating the reason each data element was not
imported is also available in HTML format. To see the detailed report, click Detailed Report.
This report groups information by borehole, which is uniquely identified by the UWI. The
detailed report indicates what kind of well property information could not be imported and a
reason for each failure.
Both the US and International IHS master data stores contain historical geologic data that is
valid data but that cannot be used for interpretation. For example, the International database
(EDIN) contains information about eroded out formation top picks on wells, but these picks
have no depth values and therefore will be rejected by Kingdom.

only those changes that have occurred since the last report. This practice will reduce the size
of the report and make it easier to identify any changes to the wells in your project.
The UWI Change Control report provides information only. It is up to you to make any
changes to your Kingdom project based on the information in the report.
Note: The UWI Change Control Report is based on 14-digit UWI numbers. If your project
contains any wells with 12-digit UWI numbers, Kingdom appends 00 to the number to
make it a 14-digit UWI number and then queries for any changes or deletions based
on the new 14-digit number.
