Candidate name : VIVIEN A CHINGEZI

Candidate number :3096

Centre name :GOROMONZI HIGH SCHOOL
Centre number :030202
Learning area :PHYSICS
Level :FORM 4
Cala title :ELECTRICITY

Background

There has been a global concern to reduce the effects of

non renewable energy sources in order to reduce the
effects of global warming.the generally agreed way of
eliminating the increase in global warming is to use
renewable energy generally regarded as a clean source
of energy. In order for a household to consider using a
renewable source like solar. The household energy
requirements must be known.
Problem statement

Goromonzi high school has been suffering from power outages

because of high rates of energy consumption in the school
which has an increase in electricity bills.\
Objectives
To calculate daily, weekly & monthly consumption of 4 rooms in
the school
To calculate average amount of money the school uses to pay
for the electricity of the 4 rooms/month
Giving recommendations and conclusions on the electricity
usage in the school
Methodology
1. Physically identifying 4 rooms and and listing electrical
appliances used in the school

2. A) Daily consumption is calculated by determining the power

rating and daily usage hours of each appliance
B)Multiply daily consumption by 7 for weekly consumption
C)Multiply daily consumption by 31 for monthly consumption

3. use of current electricity tariffs to calculate the cost for each

room then total consumption

3. Data will be presented on :

 Tables
 Pie chart

Literature Review
According to Bour deau et at (2019) older buildings have poor
electric conditions which lead to a higher energy consumption

According to Santa mouris et at (2007) inefficient use of energy

resources contributed to excessive consumption.

Sustainable Energy Authority (2012) stated that the use of

energy intensive equipment and outdated technology can lead
to a higher energy consumption rate.

Objective number 1
i. 4 rooms :
-staffroom
-staff kitchen
-4 east classroom
- geography room

ii. Appliances in each room

Staff room
Television(100W , 5hrs/day)
Lights(60W , 5hrs/day)
Fans(50W , 8hrs/day)

Staff kitchen
Refrigerator(150W , 24 hrs/day)
Microwave oven(1200W , 0.5 hrs/day)
Lights (60W , 2hrs/day)

4 east classroom
Gadget charger (10W , 2hrs/day)

Lights( 60W , 6hrs/ day)

Geography room
Lights (60W, 4hrs/day)

Projector (300W, 5hrs/day)

2. Consumption of the 4 rooms

Objective 2-calculating the average amount of money the school

needs to pay for electricity for the 4 rooms/ month

NB-ELECTRICITY TARIFF =US $0.08

1. Staffroom
Monthly consumption = 36kwh
Cost=36kwh x $0.08=$2.88

2. Staff kitchen
Monthly consumption = 129.6kwh
Cost=129.6kwh x $0.08=$10.37

3. 4 east classroom
Monthly consumption = 11.4kwh
Cost = 11.4kwh x $0.08 = $0.91

4.Geography room
Monthly consumption = 59.94kwh
Cost=59.94kwh x $0.08=$4.80

Total monthly cost of the four rooms

 $2.88 + $10.37 + $0.91 + $4.80 = $18.96

Analysis and results

CALCULATIONS :
NB-230.96 is the total monthly consumption of the 4
rooms
i. Staffroom
- 36/230.96 x 360 = 56.11˚
ii. Staff kitchen
-129.6/230.96 x 360 = 202˚
iii. 4 East classroom
-11.42/230.96 x 360 = 17.8˚
iv. Geography room
-53.94/230.96 x 360 = 84.09˚

CONCLUSION

 the staff kitchen consumes the most energy due to the

use of the refrigerator and microwave oven , hence it
contributes more than the other rooms in terms of
expenses.
 The television and projector are also significant energy
consumers
 4 east consumes the least energy
Recommendations

 Use energy efficient appliances and Led lights to reduce

consumption.
 Encourage turning off of appliances when not in use
and minimizing use of energy devices.
 Invest in alternative energy sources to lower costs of
grid electricity.
 Maintain appliances to ensure they operate efficiently
and last longer.

Precautions when using electricity

 When working with electricity , avoid contact with wet

surfaces
 Never use damaged insulation, broken plugs or any
damaged equipment
 Turn off mains if one is working on any receptacle in
the kitchen
