III. Description:
Essentials of the structure and nature of the English language. Systematic
study of English grammar: the elements and processes of the sound system, the system of
grammatical markers, the syntax and the semantic systems of English.
IV. Course objectives: At the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of English grammar
2. Show various purposes for which language is used
3. Recognize the impact of cultural, economic, political and social environments upon language.
4. Take informed stands on issues of professional concern.
V. Discussion: A thorough study of traditional English grammar and discussion of some nontraditional
questions. We attempt to demystify the language of grammar, learn to analyze sentences, contrast literary
styles through the language of grammar, and consider differences between dialects and Standard English.
Attention will be given to applications for both native and non-native learners of English.
VI. Contents:
Unit 3:
Parts of Speech, Adjectives, Gerunds, and Infinitives.
Chapters:
1. Building suspense through descriptive Language.
2. Analyzing narrative word choice.
3. Analyzing Characters through inference.
4. Identifying main ideas and themes through symbolism.
5. Understanding the development of ideas.

HOMEWORK
Lesson 5: Infinitives. Focus on new words, main ideas, 10% August 7th
development of ideas in order to write a Personal
narrative.
