Quarter: 4 Week: 4 MELC(s): Solves routine and non-routine problems involving

the volume of rectangular prism. (M4ME-IVf-65)
➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Soaring High With Mathematics 4
➢ Chapter: 8 Pages: 265 - 267 Topic: Solving Routine and Non-routine
Problems Involving the Volume of
Rectangular Prism
➢ Objective: To solve routine and non-routine problems involving the volume of
rectangular prism.

Let Us Discover

In finding the volume of a rectangular prism, we multiply the length, the width,
and the height. Then, we express the answer in cubic units. The formula is:
𝑉 = 𝑙×𝑤×ℎ h

Problem does not always look for the volume. Sometimes, it asks for length
(long), width (wide) or height (high/tall). Here is the formula for each:
To look for volume → 𝑉 = 𝑙 × 𝑤 × ℎ to look for length → 𝑙 = 𝑉 ÷ (𝑤 𝑥 ℎ)
To look for width → 𝑤 = 𝑉 ÷ ( 𝑙 𝑥 ℎ) to look for height → ℎ = 𝑉 ÷ (𝑙 𝑥 𝑤)

Routine Problem

Father is a fish vendor. He has an icebox where he placed the fish to keep them
fresh. The box measures 6 dm wide, 15 dm long and 10 dm high. What is the volume
of the box?

1. What is asked in the problem? The Volume of the box

2. What information are given? 15 dm long, 6 dm wide, 10 dm high
3. What operation shall we use? Multiplication
4. What is the number sentence? 𝑉 = 𝑙 × 𝑤 × ℎ = 6 𝑑𝑚 × 15 𝑑𝑚 × 10 𝑑𝑚
5. What is the answer to the problem? 900 dm3

Non-Routine Problem
Ruella had a bottle of water. She puts the content of the bottle to a milk box that
measures 25 cm tall, 9 cm wide and 10 cm long. In doing so, she found out that the
box is still half full. What is the volume of the water from the bottle?

1. What is asked in the problem? The Volume of the water in the bottle
2. What information are given? 10 cm long, 9cm wide, 25 cm high
3. What operation shall we use? Multiplication and Division
4. What is the number sentence? 𝑉 = ( 𝑙 × 𝑤 × ℎ) ÷ 2
= (10 cm x 9 cm x 25 cm) ÷ 2
5. What is the answer to the problem? 2 250 cm3 ÷ 2 = 1 125 cm3

Let Us Try

Read and solve each problem carefully. Encircle the letter of the correct
answer.
1. The kitchen cabinet measures 15 dm long, 5 dm wide and 18 dm tall. What is its
volume?
A. 38 dm3 B. 54 dm3 C. 180 dm3 D. 1 350 dm3
2. Kuya Ador made a wooden door for his house. It is 0.05 m wide, 0.9m long and
2.1 m high. Find the volume of the door.
A. 0.00945 cm3 B. 0.0945 cm3 C. 0.945cm3 D. 945 cm3
3. A rectangular box can hold 24 000 cm3 of sand. It is 30 cm long, 20cm wide. How
tall is the box?
A. 80 cm B. 60 cm C. 40 cm D. 20 cm
4. A shoe box measures 12 cm wide, 30 cm long and 10 cm tall. If there are 3
boxes put together in a row, what is their volume?
A. 10 800 cm3 B. 7 200cm3 C. 3 600 cm3 D. 1 200cm3
5. 5. A food container measures 10 cm wide, 15 cm long and 20 cm high. A
third of its content was given to Jamie. How much of its content was left?
A. 1 000 cm 3 B. 2 000 cm 3 C. 3 000 cm 3 D. 4 000 cm3

Let Us Do

Carefully read the following problems then solve. You may use separate
piece of paper for your solution. Write your answer on the space provided below
the problem.

1. Mrs. Lozada asked her husband to make a box where she can place the rice to
be sold. The box measures 120 cm long and 60 cm wide. If it is 45 cm high, what
is the volume of the box?
Answer: ___________________________
2. The rectangular water tank has a volume of 144 cubic meter of water. If it is 6 m
long and 3 m wide, how tall/high is the water tank?
Answer: ___________________________
3. The storage car has a freezer room for their meat and fish. The room measures
2.0 m wide, 3.2 m long and 2.0 m high. What is the volume of the freezer room?
Answer: ___________________________
4. Mang Gerry has a piece of lumber for his carpentry work. It measures 6 cm wide,
18 cm long and 200 cm tall. If he wants to cut it into 4 equal pieces, what is the
volume of each piece of lumber?
Answer: ____________________________
5. A construction worker made 6 rectangular posts for the fence. Each post
measures 20 cm by 20 cm by 150 cm. What will be the volume of the posts if they
will be put together?
Answer: ____________________________

Let Us Apply

Do what is asked from you. Make your work neat and clean. You may use
another piece of paper or a bond paper for you answer.

1. Look for any small medicine box. Using a ruler, measure its length, width and
height using centimeter. Paste your box on your paper, label the sides and find its
volume. Show your solution.

2. Look for a dictionary at home. Using a ruler, measure its length, width, and height
in centimetre unit. Draw or illustrate it on your paper. Label the sides. Supposing,
you have 4 kinds of it, and you put them together. What will be their volume? Show
your solution.
