■ 1- Where would we be without science?
■ 2- Will digital facilities influence social media use? How? ■ ■ 3- To what extent can e-commerce service substitute physical shopping and in which circumstances? ■ ■ Decision making, virtues, beliefs and understanding of the world would all be unrecognizable ■ The paradigm shift started a few hundred years ago with the enlightenment era. ■ The 2nd half of the 18th century , philosophers, intellectuals (especially Spinoza, Locke, Bayle, Newton) :They were against: for: . • arbitrariness, • Ethics, • obscurantism, • knowledge, • superstitions and • reason and • beliefs in the so called truth • renaissance ● ADVANTAGES S1 AND Prof. ACHAHBAR ASMAE DRAWBACKS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 1- Science Leads to Knowledge and Discovery
■ Science expands our understanding of life.
■ It looks and tries to provide answers to the mysteries of existence
■ Science looks for insight and objectivity. It takes what we think we
know and seeks to prove it. 2- Science Facilitates Progress and Development
The expansion of knowledge is tantamount to
progress. ■ 3- Science Defies False Beliefs.
■ Only with the persistence, brilliance, and scientific approaches
of a few incredible minds did we move into modern medical practices that save countless lives each year ... ■ science is about getting us closer to the truth. ■ The scientific endeavor helps us find answers to the deepest problems and takes us further down the road to discovery. 4- Science Solves Problems
■ Solutions ex: vaccinations, smartphones, the light bulb, Telephone,
airplanes…
■ None of them would have been possible without testing,
experimentation, curiosity, and challenging assumptions.
■ Science is a champion of progress. And you don’t see progress without
problem-solving. 5- Science Informs Decision Making
■ If you’re lucky, you live in a society where major decision-
making is based on solid scientific evidence. 6-It will make our life easier
■ This helps our work can be done faster.
■ It helps us organize our daily activities
7- It helps us to communicate more easily with others.
■ It helps to better know and understand other cultures and
societies ■ It is significant in business: transactions and other events are done through the computer. ■ Science and technology enable every people to live in an easy and modern way of life. ■ II- Drawbacks of science and technology 1-SCIENCE IS A WORLD OF OBJECTIVITY;
■ Science prevents that person of science from attaining the
immense positivity that faith and religion can provide.
■ He believes when there is physical proof.
■ 2- SCIENCE IS COLD, RATIONAL, AND SUBVERSIVE ■ science is cold and clinical; ■ the environment of a the laboratory is whitewashed and sterile. ■ It’s the refusal to accept that life might have more to it than what meets the eye. ■ As much as science has catapulted human progress, it can standstill your personal experience of the world. ■ Everything needs to be proven to be believed; it removes the mystery from the world, which can be a vital source of hope. ■ 3- SCIENCE RESULTS IN HUGE MORAL DILEMMAS ■ Scientific progress is stupefying and frightening. ■ We’ve reached levels of technological development that create serious moral dilemmas. Think about manipulating DNA, changing the physical features of unborn children, or creating robots/computers that might, one day, think for them. ■ Something about it feels out of control ■ 4- SCIENCE THREATENS OUR WELFARE ■ Science seems to put discovery above all else.
■ inhuman and unethical things are done in the name of science,
– experimenting on animals, – destroying the natural world, – creating nuclear weapons.
■ justification: necessary for scientific progress.
■ 5- SCIENCE MAKES THE FUTURE FEEL UNCERTAIN ■
■ One may think of hitting a pause. Do we really know what
we’re getting ourselves into?
■ Scientific advance makes the future seem uncertain;
■ the scale and speed of change is high. It feels hard to keep
