(b) If moment of force is assigned a negative sign will the turning tendency of the force be
clockwise or anticlockwise? [2]

(iv) A man can open a nut by applying a force of 150 N by using a lever handle of length 0.4 m. What
should be the length of the handle, if he is able to open it by applying a force of 60 N? [2]

(v) (a) When does a force do work?


(b) What is the work done by the moon when it revolves around the earth? [2]

(vi) (a) Name the waves used for echo depth sounding.
(b) Give one reason their use for the above purpose. [2]
(vii) (a) Draw a graph of potential difference (V) versus current (I) for an ohmic resistor.
(b) How can you find the resistance of the resistor from this graph? [2]

(i) State two characteristics of the image of an extended source, formed by a concave lens. [2]

(ii) (a) Name the material used for making fuse wire.
(b) State two properties of the material of fuse wire which make it suitable for use. [2]

(iii) (a) What is an electromagnet?


(b) State two ways in which, the strength of an electromagnet can be increased. [2]

(iv) 500 g of boiling hot water is poured into a mug of mass 0.15 kg and specific heat capacity 800 J
kg-10C-1If the temperature of water drops to 70 °C, calculate the amount of heat energy lost by water.[2]

(v) A mixture of radioactive substances gives off three types of radiations.


(a) Name the radiation which travels with the speed of light.
(b) Name the radiation which has the highest ionising power. [2]

Question 4.

(i) Zaheen puts a pencil into a glass container having water and is surprised to see the pencil in a
different state.
(a) What change is observed in the appearance of the pencil?
(b) Name the phenomenon responsible for the change.
(c) Draw a ray diagram showing how the eyes sees the pencil. [3]

(ii) A ray of light enters a glass slab PQRS, as shown in the diagram. The critical angle of the glass is
42°. Copy this diagram and complete the path of the ray till it emerges from the glass slab. Mark the
angles in the diagram wherever necessary. [3]

(iii) A ray of light strikes the surface of a rectangular glass block such that the angle of incidence is (a)
0 and (b) 42°. Sketch a diagram to show the approximate path taken by the ray in each case as it passes
through the glass block and emerges. [4]

(i)A concave lens of focal length 15 cm forms an image 10cm from the lens.
(a) How far is the object placed from the lens?
(b) Draw the ray diagram. [3]

(ii) Figure shows the refraction of a ray through a prism. Copy the diagram and ignoring dispersion at
the faces AB and AC mark the following angles:
(a) the angle of refraction at the face AB
(b) the angle of emergence
(c) the angle of deviation [3]

(iii)Copy the figure given in the figure:


(a) Complete it to show the formation of the image of the object AB.
(b) Name the lens used in the figure. [4]

Question 6.

(i) A pulley system comprises two pulleys, one fixed and the other movable.
(a) Draw labelled diagram of the arrangement and show clearly the directions of all the forces action
on it.
(b) What change can be made in the movable pulley of this system to increase the mechanical
advantage of the system? [3]

(ii) Calculate the resultant torque from the following diagram: [3]

(iii)A block of mass 30 kg is pulled up a slope (diagram below) with a constant speed by applying a
force of 200 N parallel to the slope A and B are initial and final positions of the block.
(a) Calculate the work done by the force in moving the block from
(b) Calculate the potential energy gained by the block. [4]

(i) A man standing 25 m away from a well produces a sound and receives the reflected sound.
(a) Calculate the time after which he receives the reflected sound if the speed sound in air is of 350
ms-¹.
(b) Will the man be able to hear a distinct echo? Give a reason for your answer. [3]

(ii)(a) When does the nucleus of an atom become radioactive?


(b) How is the radioactivity of an element affected, when it undergoes a chemical change to form a
chemical compound?
(c) Mention one use and one harmful effect of radioactivity. [3]

(iii) (a) Sometimes when a vehicle is driven at a particular speed, a rattling sound is heard. Explain
briefly why this happens and give the name of the phenomenon taking place?
(b) Suggest one way by which the rattling sound could be stopped. [4]

(i) State the function of each of the following in a house circuiting:


(a) kWh meter,
(b) main fuse, and
(c) main switch. [3]

(ii) A nucleus 11Na24 emits a ẞ-particle to change into magnesium (Mg).


(a) Write the symbolic equation for the process.
(b) What are numbers 24 and 11 called?
(c) What is the general name of 24 24

(iii) (a) Draw a graph of potential difference (V) versus current (I) for an ohmic resistor.
(b) How can you find the resistance of the resistor from this graph?
(c) What is a non-ohmic resistor? [4]

Question 9.

(i) A vessel of negligible heat capacity contains 40 g of ice in it at 0°C. 8 g of steam at 100°C is passed
into the ice to melt it. Find the final temperature of the contents of the vessel. (Specific latent heat of
vaporisation of steam = 2268 Jg-1, Specific latent heat of fusion of ice 336 Jg-1, Specific heat capacity
of water = 4.2 Jg-1 °C-1) [3]

(ii) The graph represents a cooling curve for a substance being cooled from higher temperature to a
lower temperature.
(a) What is the boiling point of the substance?
(b) What happens in the region DE?
(c) Why is region DE shorter than the region BC? [3]

(iii) The given figure shows a closed coil connected to a galvanometer G. The galvanometer shows
deflection to the right when N-pole of the bar magnet is brought closer to the coil AB. [4]

(a) Why does the deflection occur in the galvanometer?


(b) State the observation when:
(1) The coil is moved away from N-pole.
(2) Both the coil and magnet are moved to the right with the same speed.
