technology in wind measurement. The sensor has an
onboard microcontroller that captures and processes
data and communicates over serial interfaces.
• The wind sensor has an array of three equally spaced
ultrasonic transducers on a horizontal plane. Wind speed
(WS) and wind direction (WD) are determined by
measuring the time it takes the ultrasound to travel from
each transducer to the other two.

Wind Vane

The WAV151 Wind Vane is a counter-balanced,

low threshold optoelectronic wind vane.
Infrared LEDs and phototransistors are
mounted on six orbits on each side of a 6-bit
GRAY-coded disc. Rotated by the vane, the
disc creates changes in the code received by
the phototransistors. The code is changed in
steps of 5.6°, one bit at a time to eliminate
any ambiguities in the coding.
Technical Data – Wind Vane

Anemometer

WAA 151 is a optoelectronic, fast-response, low threshold

anemometer. In the cup wheel it has three lightweight
conical cups providing excellent linearity over the
entire operating range, up to 75 m/s. Rotated by the wind, a
chopper disc attached to the cup wheel’s shaft cuts an
infrared light beam 14 times per revolution, generating a
pulse train output from a phototransistor.

The output pulse rate can be regarded directly proportional

to wind speed, for example, 246 Hz = 24.6 m/s.

Working Principle

MOR

100% 5%
intensity intensity

ƒ MOR can be measured by measuring the attenuation of light

ƒ Attenuation is caused by scattering and absorption
- cont
– TRANSMISSOMETER
- large sample volume
- limited dynamic range
- accuracy maintained in all types of precipitation
- tedious installation
- continuous maintenance and calibration

– FORWARD SCATTERING
- small sample volume
- large dynamic range
- precipitation may cause inaccurate results (unless the
measurement is compensated)
- easy installation
- less maintenance
Product Overview
ƒ Range Extension
–Transmissometer LT31 allows to cover the whole RVR range as well the
range required for aeronautical visibility with a single baseline system.

ƒ Auto-Calibration

–A forward scatter sensor is an integral part of the LT31 system. It is used

to calibrate the transmittance measurement fully automatically. This
allows to compensate for window contamination and misalignment in
the medium and long term

ƒ Auto-Alignment

–A precise alignment mechanism inside the measurement unit is used to

carry out automatically the fine alignment of the LT31 system.
- cont
ƒContamination Prevention

–Air stream driven by a blower creates an air curtain in front of the LT31
windows to reduce the amount of window contamination caused by
precipitation.

ƒ Alignment Quality Control

–Based on the auto-calibration and window contamination

measurement, the alignment quality of the transmissometer is
permanently observed and reported in the standard serial data message
of LT31.

Emission

An electromagnetic pulse is emitted

towards the zenith and at least 2
15deg-tilted directions (North and
West for ex.)
Reception
The intensity of the return signal
by the atmosphere depends
mainly on the humidity and on the
thermal gradients within the
atmosphere
Wind Profiler – LAP 8000

The wind profiler sample along each of five beams: one is aimed
vertically to measure vertical velocity, and four are tilted off
vertical and oriented orthogonal to one another to measure the
horizontal components of the air's motion. A profiler's ability to
measure winds is based on the assumption that the turbulent
eddies that induce scattering are carried along by the mean wind.
The energy scattered by these eddies and received by the profiler
is orders of magnitude smaller than the energy transmitted.
However, if sufficient samples can be obtained, then the
amplitude of the energy scattered by these eddies can be clearly
identified above the background noise level, then the mean wind
speed and direction within the volume being sampled can be
determined.
