OLYMPICS
HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES: The Olympic Games have a rich
history dating back to ancient Greece. Inspired by the games of the city of Olympia,
which were held in the 8th century BC, the modern Olympic Games have become
one of the largest international sporting events.
The Olympic Games originated in Olympia, Greece, in honor of the god Zeus.
Athletes competed in disciplines such as running, wrestling and discus throwing.
These games were part of a tradition that sought to promote peace and harmony
among the Greek city-states.
Renaissance: After centuries of inactivity, the Olympic Games were revived in the
19th century. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed in 1894 to
coordinate and produce these events. Since then, the Olympic Games have been
held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Games.
Disciplines: The Summer Olympic Games include 28 disciplines, such as athletics,
swimming, gymnastics and cycling. The Winter Olympics, on the other hand, have
15 disciplines, such as skiing, ice skating and bobsleigh.
Icon of peace: Throughout their history, the Olympic Games have symbolized
peace between nations. Although they have faced challenges, such as world wars
and the pandemic, their spirit persists.

Specifically, in 1914, when Pierre de Coubertin presented it in Paris. Each ring has
a color: blue, black, yellow, green and red, placed in two rows on a white
background. They were chosen so that the flags of all countries had at least one of
those colors.
The most widespread and most probable theory is that the 5 rings represent the 5
continents that participate in the Olympics, these being Oceania, America, Africa,
Europe and Asia.
WHAT DOES EACH COLOR OF EACH RING IN THE OLYMPIC
GAMES MEAN?
Each color not only identifies a continent, but also reflects its particular
characteristics: blue for the seas that surround Oceania; green, for the vast
diversity of forests in Europe; black, in honor of the people of Africa; red, evoking
the indigenous Americans, and yellow, for the skins and deserts of Asia.
IN WHAT YEAR WERE THE OLYMPIC GAMES CANCELED FOR THE FIRST
TIME?
On three previous occasions, the Games were actually canceled due to World War
I (1916) and World War II (1940 and 1944). In those last two years, the Winter
Olympic Games were also canceled.
as well as the postponement of 2020 to 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
