II. Content
Topic: Ratio and Proportion
Reference: Teachers Guide, Learners Module
Materials: ICT, chalk and blackboard
Value Focus: Rationality
III. Procedures
A. Pre-Activity
Attendance Check
B. Motivation
“Truth or Dare”. (Spin-a-Bottle)
Embracing the daring side of students by the “Truth-or-Dare game”.
Choosing “Dare” will have the student solve challenging math questions to get the correct answer
or “Truth” for him/her to recall of mathematical concepts or vocabulary.
C. Discussion:
Presentation the topic “Ratio and Proportion”.
Ratio
Ratio is the comparison of two or more quantities. Quantities involved in ratio are of the
same kind so that ratio does not make use of units.
What is the ratio of the orange to the apple?
Orange:Apple
There are 2 oranges and three apples.
So we can say that the ratio of orange to apple is 2:3
Rate is a ratio that compares two different quantities which have different units.
A car travels 150 kilometers in 2 hours. It has a rate of
150km : 2hrs or 75km : 1hr
Example:
1. What is the ratio of x to y if x= 5 and y = 11?
x:y is 5:11
3. Sixteen men is carrying 32 bucket of water. What is the ratio of those men to the
bucket of water?
Man:Bucket is 16:32 or 1:2
Try this:
1. What is the ratio of 18 to 27?
2. What is the ratio of w to r? w=28 and r=49
3. What is the ratio if 4 men can pick 100 stone pebbles?
Proportion
Proportion is an equation in which two ratios are set equal to each other.
If ratio w:x is equal to ratio y:z, the it is considered as proportion.
w:x = y:z
where w and z are called the extremes while x and y are called means.
Extremes are the values of the proportion that are furthest apart when written in ratio
form using a colon.
Means are the values of the proportions that are the middle terms.
Example:
1. Is the ratio 2:5 equal to 4:10? Are they considered proportion? Why?
2. Is the ratio 1:2 equal to 50:100? Are they considered proportion? Why?
3. Is the ratio 4:7 equal to 6:9? Are they considered Proportion? Why?
Try this:
Identify if the following equations are Proportion or not.
1. 3:7 = 15:35
2. 2:14 = 8:56
3. 5:8 = 25:35
1 3
4. =
3 9
12 4
5. =
6 2
D. Generalization
1. What is a Ratio?
2. Explain the difference of Ratio to Rate?
3. When can we say that the two Ratios are considered Proportion??
E. Application
1. The car travels 20 kilometers for every liter of gasoline consumed. How far will it go
with a full 15-liter tank capacity?
2. At this moment, we’re experiencing extremely hot weather. As advised, we need to
drink 8 glasses of water in a day. How may glasses of water we need to drink in 25 days?
IV. Assessment:
A. Identify if the following pair of ratios are Proportion or Not?
1. 4:8 = 10:20 _______________________
2. 3:9 = 2:8 _______________________
3. 1:1 = 100:100 _______________________
4. 7:4 = 21:16 _______________________
5. 2:3 = 4:5 _______________________
V. Assignment
This month of February, ILECO-I charges Php 13.08 in every kilowatt hour of
consumption. Ask your parents how much they payed for the electric bill on that month and use
that to solve the amount of kilowatt-hour that your family consume. Then list two(2) tips for us
to follow in order to conserve and lessen our monthly expenditure on electricity.
