BOILER COLD START UP PROCEDURE

According to metal temperature of turbine unit start up procedure may be cold start up, warm start
up or hot start up. Here cold start up procedure is described below:
COLD START UP STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE OF A COAL FIRED THERMAL POWER
PLANT:-
SITUATION:- AC POWER IS ON. NO EQUIPMENT IS RUNNING

The following are the main step to remember for taking action in details:-

1. Start ACW Pump → BACK Charge the CONDENSER & CW Pump Discharge lines for water
filling and air releasing. ( Time may be 25-30 Minutes).

2. Start CW PUMP.

3. Start DM make up Pump & FILL DM Make Up Tank

4. Start DMCW PUMP AFTER TANK Level is Normal

5. Start AIR COMPRESSOR. If, not INSTRUMENTS & ACTUATORS WILL NOT WORK.

6. Line up boiler and deaerator storage tank to take water in boiler drum and deaerator storage tank.

7. Start BOILER FILL PUMP.

8. Start BOILER DRUM Water Filling up to Normal Level and DEAERATOR STORAGE TANK &
HOTWELL up to normal level.

9. Taking auxiliary steam from side unit ( if available) start Deaerator initial heating system.

10. Start CEP AND KEEP IT RUNNING ON RECIRCULATION.

11. Start APH → ID FAN → FD FAN .

12. ESTABLISH air flow approx.30% to 40% maintaining furnace pressure between (-5) & (-10 mm
wc).

13. Check all permissive for furnace purge is available.

14. Start PURGING of FURNACE.

15. Keep LFO PUMP Running on recirculation.

16. Keep ECO RECIRCULATION VALVE OPEN

17. ESTABLISH GENERATOR SEAL OIL system & FEED hydrogen gas following the gas feeding
procedure.

18. PUT TURBINE ON BARRING GEAR.

19. LIGHT UP BOILER WITH LDO two GUNS ( AB 1-3 )

20. AFTER 15 - 30 Minutes Cut -in Other PAIR ( AB 2- 4 ).

21. AT DRUM PRE approx. 2 Kg/cm2 CLOSE DRUM VENTs.

22. START One BFP & KEEP IT RUNNING ON recirculation

23. AT DRUM Pressure approx. at 6 – 8 Kg/cm2 CLOSE STEAM SIDE DRAINS & VENTS except
START UP VENT.

24. At around 10 kg/cm2 main steam pressure WARM UP Main Steam (MS) LINE , then open the
Main steam stop valves.

25. At MAIN STEAM PRESSURE approx. 25 Kg/cm2, PUT Self APRDS system into SERVICE.

26. CLOSE REHEAT VENT & DRAIN 260

27. START VACUUM PULLING system maintaining the following steps:-

i. START VACUUM PUMPS

ii. CLOSE VACUUM BREAKER

iii. CHARGE TURBINE GLAND SEALING STEAM LINE

28. Charge HP-LP BYPASS system & then Close START UP VENT.

29. START DEAERATOR PEGGING STEAM FROM APRDS AND STOP DEAERATOR INITIAL
HEATING.

30. PUT two more LFO GUNS in CD Elevation, and achieve matching steam parameter for TURBINE
ROLLING e.g. STEAM Pressure = 35Kg/cm2, Temp. 3500 C. approx.. ).

31. Open all turbine side drains.

32. Check X-criterias ( X1, X2 & X3) fulfilled and START TURBINE STEAM ROLLING AND
INCREASE SPEED TO 600 rpm gradually ( 200 rpm /min).

33. TURBINE SOAKING TO BE DONE FOR UNIFORM HEATING. Check criteria curves.

34. SATRT ONE PA FAN AND KEEP ONE MILL RUNNING WITHOUT FEEDER.

35. Check X-criterias ( X3, X4 , X5 & X6) are fulfilled.

36. SPEED UP TURBINE FURTHER TO 3000 rpm AFTER COMPLETION OF SOAKING.

Check necessary criteria curves ( X7).

37. SYNCHRONISE GENERATOR maintaining steps as per rule shown below:-–

CLOSE ALL ISOLATORS FROM GENERATOR TO MAIN BUS ( 220 KV / 400 KV).
 CLOSE FIELD BREAKER
PUT AVR - I / II AUTO ON
CHECK GENERATOT OUT VOLTAGE – 16.5 KV
 PUT SYNCHROSCOPE – ON
MATCH INCOMING & RUNNING VOLTAGE, FREQUENCY AND PHASE SEQUENCE AND CLOSE GT
BREAKER
 LOAD (MW) WILL BE approx.5%.

38. START COAL FEEDER & INCREASE COAL FEEDING. Monitor Steam Pressure & Temperature.

39. CUT-IN 2ND MILL & RAISE FEEDING with close monitoring with Total Air Flow, Steam Pressure
& Temperature.

40. AT 20% - 25% LOAD (MW) , Take :

 LPH in SERVICE
Put UNIT AUX TRANSFORMER (UAT) in SERVICE
Change DEAERATER PEGGING steam FROM CRH source.
CHECK HPLP BY PASS system is CLOSED.
Try to STOP ALL Oil GUNS with careful monitoring with Flame Intensity.
Change over Feed Control System from LOW TO HIGH capacity VALVE

41. AT 40% - 45% LOAD (MW) :-

 Take HPH IN SERVICE

PUT EHG GOV system LOAD TO PRE CONTROL mode ( TURBINE FOLLOW MODE )
CHARGE DEA PEGGING STEAM FROM CRH TO EXTRN. LINE
CUT-IN 3RD MILL & RAISE FEEDING. MONITOR STM PRE & TEMP.

42. AT 50-55% LOAD (MW):-

 START 2ND BFP
START 2ND. SET of ID , FD & PA FAN
TAKE 4TH MILL & GO FOR FULL LOAD
OBSERVE TSE / TSC MARGINS CAREFULL
43. Increase load gradually to 100%. 261
