2 General
The ESM-10 is an electronic control unit especially developed for the purpose of
fundamental safety and speed measuring functions on all Wärtsilä 4-stroke engines. The
functionality covers all present engine applications and the unit is the basic building block
for all future system development. The ESM-10 module is largely redundant, based on
hardwired logic and built to meet the stringest safety requirements. The module is
designed to be used both in a stand-alone fashion as well as in combination with an
embedded engine management system, e.g. for gas and common rail engines.

5 Functional blocks
5.1 Engine speed measuring and overspeed shutdown
Engine speed is measured with two independent speed sensors with separate supply
circuits and sensor failure detection circuits. The frequency from each speed sensor is
converted into a voltage signal, 1,00 V equals nominal engine speed, 100 %. The voltage
signals are used to trig the overspeed trip circuits. Overspeed limits are fixed to 113 % and
117 % of nominal engine speed. Tuning of the frequency measuring channels is done by
setting the frequency value equal to nominal engine speed, (100 %), with the BCD-rotary
switches on the PCB.
The two speed measuring channels are compared and if the difference is more than 5 %,
speed differential failure is indicated. The higher speed value is selected and used as an
internal speed signal for controlling analogue outputs and speed switches. Figure 2 shows
the speed measuring principles in ESM-10.

• Sensors used:
− PNP
− “push-pull”, square pulse
• Power supply to sensors, 24 VDC (module supply voltage), max. 30 mA
• Inputs:
− receives pulses from speed sensors 1 and 2 (main & backup)
− overall accuracy ± 1,0 %
− repeatability better than ± 0,5 %
• Failure detection:
− frequencies compared to each other => speed differential failure. Speed differential
failure indication is disabled if engine speed < speed switch 1. The speed
differential failure is triggered when the difference between the engine speed
signals is greater than 5 %.
− short circuit detection
− wire break detection
− sensor failure and speed differential failure trigs ESM alarm output after 2 s delay,
if failure remains
• Speed outputs:
− engine speed output 1, configurable 0-10 V or 4-20 mA output for external
systems. Voltage or current output is selected when module is manufactured =>
different article numbers.
− engine speed analogue output 1 is dedicated to external usage => galvanic isolation
− engine speed output 2, always 4-20 mA output for local use.
− engine speed pulse output: optocoupler for galvanic isolation, max. 24 VDC 250
mA load. The pulse output is not supplied by the ESM, external supply required.
• Overspeed shutdown:
− trigging point for overspeed shutdown 1 is 113 % of nominal engine speed
− trigging point for overspeed shutdown 2 is 117 % of nominal engine speed
• Activates: stop solenoids 1, 2, 3 and 4, stop/shutdown 1&2

5.2 Speed switches 1-4, speed windows 1-2 and hour counter output
The internal speed signal is controlling speed switches and speed windows. The setpoints
for the speed switches and speed windows are potentiometer settings in the ESM. The
levels can easily be measured in a test connector inside the module and trimmed to the
desired values. 0,0 – 1,0 V corresponds to 0 – 100 % of nominal engine speed hence e.g.
0,65 V corresponds to 65 % of nominal engine speed.
Speed switch 1 is used for the “engine running” information. It also controls the hour
counter output. For controlling shutdown blocking functions at engine start a “delayed
speed switch 1” signal is used, see figure 3.
Speed switch 4 is equipped with a selectable delay, 0, 2, 5 or 10 seconds. This is the delay
time before the output is activated after that the adjusted speed limit is reached.
Speed windows have a fixed 2 seconds delay before the outputs are activated after entering
the speed window. The speed window lower limit can not be higher than the high limit =>
you can not have a “negative” window.
“Speed below 2 % of nominal speed” is a fixed internal setpoint that disables the reset
function while the engine is running with a speed greater than 2% of the nominal speed.
This function is implemented in order to prevent the engine from starting unintentionally if
the reset is pressed before engine has stopped.

• Trimming and ranges

− speedswitches and windows adjusted with potentiometers have internal measuring
points, in order to more easily adjust and check setpoints
− speed switch 1 setpoint is the setpoint for the engine running information.
Internally in ESM it controls shutdown blockings and the running hour counter
output.
− speed switch 1, adjustable trigging point, 0-50 % of nominal engine speed. Output
N.O.
ƒ typical application: engine running information
− speed switch 2 and 3, adjustable trigging point, 10-120 % of nominal engine speed.
Output N.O.
ƒ typical application: AVR activation
− speed switch 4, adjustable trigging point, 10-120 % of nominal engine speed and
selectable time delay 0, 2, 5, 10 s. Output N.O.
ƒ typical application: ready to synchronise
− speed switch outputs are galvanically isolated by solid state relays.
− max. resistive load 110 VDC / 0,5 A. If inductive loads are connected the load
must be equipped with back suppression diode.
• Speed windows:
− speed window 1 & 2, adjustable trigging points upper and lower (window), fixed 2
s delay after entering window. Output N.O. Upper limit for the window can be set
to 10-120 % of nominal engine speed and the lower limit must be set under the
high limit (not possible to set above).
ƒ typical application: clutch-in permission
− speed window outputs are galvanically isolated by solid state relays
− max. resistive load 110 VDC / 0,5 A. If inductive loads are connected the load
must be equipped with back suppression diode.
• Running hour counter output
− HSD for running hour counter output
− activated by speed switch 1 (internally in ESM)
− output ratings: 24 VDC max. 0,2 A

5.3 Lubricating oil pressure shutdown and start blocking

Lubricating oil pressure shutdown setpoint can be selected to be 2,0, 2,5 or 3,0 bars. When
the oil pressure drops below the limit the shutdown signal is delayed by 2 seconds to filter
temporary pressure drops before trigging the shutdown.
Lubricating oil pressure start blocking is controlled by the same sensor as used for the
shutdown. Start blocking setpoints are 0,3, 0,5 and 0,8 bars. Start blocking output is
activated if the pressure is below the setpoint or if sensor failure is detected. There is also a
possibility to configure the ESM so that the external shutdown 3 input activates the start
blocking output. This configuration is used when the gear box lubricating oil pressure
switch is connected to the ESM external shutdown 3 and start blocking from the gear box
lubricating oil pressure is wanted. Lubricating oil pressure shutdown function is depicted
in figure 4.

• Sensor:
− 4-20 mA 2-wire pressure transmitter 0-10 bar
− 24 VDC supply from ESM, loop supply
− overall accuracy ± 1,0 %
− repeatability better than ± 0,5 %
• Sensor failure detection:
− sensor failure indicated when out of range, <3,5 mA or >20,5 mA
− ESM alarm output activated after 2 s, if failure remains
• Shutdown:
− setpoints for the lubricating oil pressure shutdown are, 2,0 bar, 2,5 bar and 3,0 bar.
Activates when pressure goes low.
− filtering of the signal by a 2 s delay circuit
− shutdown pre-warning delay is configurable
− activates: stop solenoids 1 and 3, stop/shutdown status 1&2
• Blocking of lubricating oil pressure shutdown when:
− sensor failure (out of range) is detected
− immediately when other stop/shutdown is activated, otherwise lubricating oil
pressure shutdown will trigg when engine speed decreases
− engine speed lower than speedswitch 1, (blocking on when engine starting)
− common selectable off-delay for shutdown blocking, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 s, (delayed
speed switch 1).
• Pre-lubricating oil pressure start blocking output:
− start blocking is active when lubricating oil pressure is below setpoint
− possible setpoints for lubricating oil pressure start blocking are, 0,3 bar, 0,5 bar and
0,8 bar
− start blocking is active when L.O. sensor failure is detected
− start blocking output is active when it is open, (non-conducting state), i.e. fail safe
function

− lubricating oil pressure shutdown
− lubricating oil pressure start blocking
− shutdown status

5.4 HT water temperature monitoring A & B

The Pt-100 signals are converted into an internal voltage signal at the input stages in the
ESM. The voltages are compared and the higher one is converted to a 4-20 mA output
signal. Each sensor has its own shutdown circuitry but the shutdown setpoint is common
for both inputs. When sensor failure is detected the shutdown is blocked and sensor failure
indicated. A delay on the shutdown signal is filtering away “false” shutdowns caused by
disturbances in the sensitive Pt-100 measurement, see figure 5. It is possible to switch off
the B input in cases where only one sensor is used.

• Sensors:
− PT100
− 3-wire connection
− temperature range 0-160°C
− overall accuracy ± 1,0 %
− repeatability better than ± 0,5 %
• Sensor failure detection:
− out of range, wire break on compensation wire
− sensor failure activates the ESM alarm output after 2 s delay, if failure remains
• Shutdown:
− selectable trigging point for HT temperature shutdown, common limit for both
sensors
− possible shutdown levels are, 105 °C, 110 °C and 115 °C
− sensor failure is blocking HT temperature shutdown when failure is detected =>
sensor failure does not cause shutdown
− possible to disable HT temperature shutdown B when only one sensor is used
− shutdown pre-warning delay is configurable
− activates: stop solenoids 1 and 3, stop/shutdown status 1&2
• 4-20mA output from maximum value for HT temperature, channel A & B.
− 0 - 160 °C = 4 - 20 mA
− the analogue output is used for the HT water temperature indication on the local
control panel.
• Status signal:
− HT water temperature shutdown, (common for A & B)
• LED indications:

Stop 2 input is used during slow turning and blow sequences in order to keep the stop
active so the engine will not start. It activates the same solenoid outputs as stop 1 but it
does not activate any status outputs in order to prevent that the external system gets the
input that the engine is stopping.
• Switch input for Stop 2
− input intended for activation of stop solenoids 1 and 3 during slow turning /
blowing sequences.
− for “close to activate” switch or HSD with ESM supply 0 V as common reference
− input is non-latching
• Activates: same solenoids as stop 1, see 5.6

• Input:
− for main controller shutdown signal
− possible to configure the input for “close to shutdown” or “open to shutdown”
function.
• Failure detection:
− when input is configured for “close to shutdown” function WBD can be activated

External shutdown 3 input is designed to fulfil the needs when the gear box lubricating oil
pressure switch is connected to the ESM. The input can still, with correct configuration, be
used in the same way as external shutdown 1 and 2 inputs. The input can be configured for
NO/NC switches, when “close to shutdown” is the configuration also the wire break
detection is active.

Figure 14, connection principles for external shutdown 1-3 inputs

Typical application for external shutdown 3:

When the gear box lubricating oil pressure switch is connected to the external shutdown 3
input there might be a need to have the shutdown blocked when the engine is not running.
This is possible to configure in the ESM for external shutdown 3 input. The blocking of
the shutdown is turned off when the delayed speed switch 1 signal is activated. (Same
principal as for lubricating oil pressure shutdown blocking, see 5.3)
It is also possible to add a delay time before the shutdown is activated after that the input
has been activated. This delay is mainly intended for filtering of temporarily pressure
drops in gear box oil pressure. The filtering delay can be 0, 2, 5, 10 or 25 seconds.
Start blocking output can also be activated by the external shutdown 3 input if needed. The
ESM will then activate the start blocking output when the input switch is in “shutdown
position” or wire break is detected. In order to easily identify if the start blocking is
activated by external shutdown 3 the status LED is lit immediately when the input is
activated for shutdown or start blocking.

5.10 External shutdown 4

The external shutdown 4 input is intended for the emergency stop circuit. The shutdown
trigs all solenoid outputs and is not possible to bypass with the stop/shutdown override
function. The circuit is supplied by the internal power supply 2. It is possible to select if
“close to shutdown” or “open to shutdown” switches are used, (WBD active when close to
shutdown mode is selected).

• External shutdown 4 input

− configurable input for “close to shutdown” / “open to shutdown” function
− when input is configured for “close to shutdown” WBD is active
− WBD resistor required when input is configured as “close to shutdown”. For
resistor values see figure 16

5.11 Stop / shutdown override

Stop/shutdown override input is used in situations when no other than emergency stop and
overspeed shutdown can be allowed. The stop/shutdown override function is preventing
the ESM from triggering the solenoid outputs. Shutdowns that are activated while
stop/shutdown override is active are indicated with the LED indications and the status
outputs. It is possible to individually select if the L.O. pressure shutdown and the engine
shutdown 1 (used for OMD) are overridden or not, see also figure 17.
If the stop/shutdown override is activated during the pre-warning delay it will prevent the
shutdown. If stop/shutdown override is activated during the de-clutch delay it will cancel
also already triggered shutdowns. These situations do not appear if the pre-warning delay
is 0 seconds and the de-clutch function is disabled or de-clutch delay is 0 seconds.

• Stop / shutdown override input

− for “close to activate” switch or HSD with ESM supply 0 V as common reference
• Function:
− disables all stop and shutdown signals except external shutdown 4 and overspeed
shutdown 1 & 2
− possible to individually configure if lubricating oil pressure shutdown and engine
shutdown 1 are overridden or not. (GL requirement: lubricating oil pressure
shutdown and OMD shutdown can not be overridden with common stop/shutdown
override button)
− the stop/shutdown override, overrides already initiated shutdowns if it is activated
during shutdown pre-warning delay time
− if de-clutch function is used it is also possible to “cancel” a shutdown by activating
stop/ shutdown override input during the de-clutch delay
• Status signal:
− stop / shutdown override

5.12 Stop / shutdown circuits

• The module has primary shutdown indication, meaning that the first shutdown that
occurs remains until reset. (No secondary stops or shutdowns are indicated.) In special
cases when several shutdown inputs are active when powering up the ESM it can
indicate several shutdowns simultaneously. Another possibility to get several
indications at the same time is that the shutdowns are activated within a very short
period of time (< 1 s).
• Shutdown pre-warning:
− common selectable shutdown pre-warning delay, 0, 2, 5, 10 s for:
ƒ HT-temperature shutdown A & B
ƒ Lubricating oil pressure shutdown
ƒ Main controller shutdown
ƒ Engine shutdown 1-3
ƒ External shutdown 1 & 3
• Declutch delay on stop/shutdown status 2 output. De-clutch function means that output
is not activated on overspeed and external shutdown 3, (gear box lube oil pressure
shutdown)
− stop/shutdown status 2 output also has a time delay, de-clutching delay, which is
adjustable in steps, 0, 2, 5, 10 s
• Solenoid outputs:
− stop solenoid 1, (energised), WBD & SCD. (Pneumatic stop 1)
− stop solenoid 2, (energised), WBD & SCD. (Pneumatic stop 2)
− stop solenoid 3, (energised / de-energised), WBD & SCD. (Act.stop / SSV)
− stop solenoid 4, (energised), WBD & SCD
• Status outputs:
− stop/shutdown status 1, NO/NC. (Run/stop to gov. / gen.breaker)
− stop/shutdown status 2, NO. Possible to configure as de-clutch output
− shutdown status (NO), active on all shutdowns, not on stop

in a similar way as the engine speed is handled. The internal voltage is then converted to a
4-20 mA signal, (or 0-10 V). There are two analogue outputs per TC speed input, one
galvanically isolated, (output 1), to be used for external systems and one without isolation,
(output 2), for local use on the engine. The setting of the output range is done by setting
the frequency corresponding to 20 mA.

6 Outputs

6.1 Solenoid outputs

• Four solid state HSD outputs for solenoids
• Output voltage 24 VDC, (module supply)
• Max continuous output current 1 A
• Solenoid outputs have protection for voltage transients caused by inductive loads
• Wire break detection on energised and de-energised solenoid outputs
− if a solenoid output is left unused a resistor of 470 Ÿ DQG W should be
connected to disable the wire break alarm
• Short circuit detection and protection

6.2 Status outputs

• Configurable if status outputs are closed when active or open when active. This is a
common configuration for all status outputs and shutdown pre-warning output.
• Maximum voltage / current: 60 VDC / 250 mA
• There are automatic fuses on the status outputs for short circuit protection of the
outputs. If the fuse is triggered it will automatically reset when the short circuit is
removed and the fuse has cooled. This can take several minutes depending on ambient
temperature.

6.3 Analogue outputs

• 4-20 mA outputs capable to drive loads up to 750 Ω
• 0-10 V outputs capable to supply 15 mA
• Voltage outputs are short circuit protected
• Overall accuracy ± 1,0 %
• Repeatability better that ± 0,5 %
• Engine speed output 1:
− galvanic isolation
− 4-20 mA or 0-10 V output, different material numbers
• TC speed 1 A&B outputs:
− galvanic isolation, (common for both channels)
− 4-20 mA or 0-10 V output, different material numbers
• Engine speed 2 output:
− 4-20 mA
− intended for local use
• TC speed 2 A&B outputs:
− 4-20 mA
− intended for local use
