Mind over mood assignment

Ahmed Saeed Masters in Clinical Psychology Part 1

Q1.Describe how thoughts help define the moods we experience?

Thoughts can certainly influence moods. Thoughts play a very important part in creating moods.
Your body and moods are determined by the thoughts. Let me give you an example. Suppose
that you are in the party and you’re meeting new people.
Case A: You are thinking that people are not coming towards you because they do not find you
attractive, then your mood will become very different. You are feeling very irritated and
discomfort.
Case B: You are thinking that all these other people are also feeling anxious and are a little bit
skeptical like you and it is a matter of time that you and everyone socializes. Then this will
create a different mood. You are feeling anxiousness and nervousness.
Case : You are just very excited of meeting new people and your thoughts are telling you that
this is a great opportunity to build relationships and record will create a very different move. You
are feeling excited.

In this example, there are three different unique thoughts. Each of these thoughts are creating
different rules. In the first thought process. All of these are unique mode. And all of them are
being created by your thought process.

Q2. Describe how thoughts influence how we behave and what we choose to do and not to do?

Thoughts have an influence on how we behave. it defines what we choose to do and not to do.
Let me give you an example.
Case A: Before you go to work, you get this exciting news that your sisters having a baby. You
also quickly check your email, and you find out that you’re getting promoted and there’s a salary
increase coming your way. Your thoughts are now becoming very positive in nature. Now you
go in your car and you’re driving towards your work. Terrible traffic. As you drive along, there
is a particular person who is stuck on the roadside and is needing help. Car is broken. You are in
a great positive mood and want to share the gratitude. In a very positive manner, you decide to
call in the office a little bit late to help this other person out.
Case B: Imagine that you are going to work, and you have the news that your friend just recently
died and that you are being terminated from work. Just imagine the kind of feelings and thoughts
that are coming in your mind. With those same thoughts, you are moving towards work. And you
see the same person on the road asking for help. You are so disgruntled that you decide not to
help. You feel miserable and do not see the benefit of helping others out. You are too much into
thoughts of negatives and thinking how you are going to survive. You decide to simply ignore
the person.
The person on the road needing help remains constant. The thing that changes is the behavior
and how you react to it. These actions are depending upon the thoughts that are coming in your
mind.

Q3. How does life experiences (environment) help determine the attitudes, beliefs, and thoughts
that develop in childhood and often persist into adulthood?

Your life experiences do help determining your attitudes, belief, and thoughts. This is not only
true for individuals, but also for cultures and civilizations. Let us give the example of sports. In
our country, there is no encouragement for female swimmers. The social and moral norms
indicate that swimming is not a great idea for females. People believe that younger girls should
not be in water and practice a sport that has body parts shown. There are no female specific
swimming pools in her area. Irrespective of these odds she still wants to become a swimmer.
Negative inputs are engraved by a family member in the society. She feels a great resistance in
terms of accomplishing her goals.
She finds it very difficult to pursue her dreams. And due to these attitudes and beliefs and
thoughts, she becomes aggressive and also depressive at later stage of her life. She must go
through a lot of excessive depression and anxiety in terms. She feels cheated. She has anger at
her childhood time and when her parents never supported her.
If she was assisted in her early years, she could have become a great swimmer. Today, she has
resentment and guilt. She feels cheated. These feelings towards society and males are hindering
her growth. Life experiences (environment) help determine the attitudes, beliefs, and thoughts
that develop in childhood and often persist into adulthood.

Q4. Describe how mood improvement may also require changes in behavior, physical reactions,
and home or work situations/ environments?
Mood improvements require changes in behavior, physical reactions, and home or work
situations/ environments to have an impact. This might also require work situations and
environments to be altered. Let us give the example of a particular boy called Alex. He has an
elder brother who is a great sports person. Alex loves looking at his brother workout, and
become a successful athlete.
Alex also wants to participate in sports and become as successful as his brother. These are great,
positive thoughts that Alex is having. Thoughts alone are not going to make him into an athlete.
Thoughts need to turn into action. Alex also must alter his environment. He needs to believe in
himself and train.
Many of times many individuals have great ideas, but never challenge themselves. In this case,
Alex has no actions correlating to his thoughts. However, he needs to incorporate the powers of
work to become a successful athlete. He needs to change his environment where he has to make
time for working out. He must go to the gym and learn new sports. If he does not do this, then all
you will have are good positive thoughts. Hence, it is intended to have behavioral changes and
alter your thoughts and do the actions so that those thoughts turn into reality.
