Performance Improvement Framework
• Performance Improvement Framework - is a method of analyzing
problems in performance, setting up systems and implementing
these to ensure good Performance.
• The goal of Performance Improvement is to improve
performance in order to facilitate the provision of high quality,
sustainable health services.
• Performance: Performance is the work/tasks that a person does
and the result of the job that individual does and how well they do
them.
• Stakeholder is someone who has something to gain/lose by what
happens in an activity or health facility. MR NKOLE 3
Performance Improvement Framework
• In performance there must be:
i. A task, job, a duty to be carried out.
ii. A performer (one who is doing the task)
iii. A level by which the performance is judged.
Factors influencing performance
• 1.Job expectations - Every performer must know exactly what is
expected of them. Job expectations must be consistent with
organizational goals (guidelines, policies, Procedures and how
these are communicated to and understood by providers).
MR NKOLE 4
Factors influencing performance cont…
• 2.Performance feedback – through feedback, providers find out
how they are doing in relation to set standards.
- performance feedback must be clear and immediate.
- it Must also be constructive and supportive.
• 3.Environment and tools – it includes facilities, supplies, materials
and tools. The worker/performer should have;
- The proper tools and supplies
- Adequate work space
- A conducive working atmosphere.

Steps of the Performance Improvement Framework (Quality
Improvement Project cont…
• In healthcare stakeholders can be: • Step 3- Describe Actual Performance- this
done through routine data collection from
 Clients, patients where work is been done. This step will help
 Employees of the facility to identify the actual performance in the
 Providers of equipment and supplies institution.
• Good quality data is necessary for accurate
 Government calculations of performance.

Steps of the Performance Improvement Framework (Quality

• Step 4. Define desired performance- • Step 6. Perform root cause analyses

• Performance gap = desired performance

• Step 7 - Select and Design Interventions - the aim should be to
propose interventions that will address key (root) causes of
performance gaps.
• The interventions selected should target to close the performance
gaps the identified.
• Step 8 - Implement interventions
• Implement the interventions in order to solve the problem.

MR NKOLE 11
• Step 9 – Evaluate intervention
• This is the last step that determines the successes or failures of the
