The reasons for war can vary greatly depending on the views of nations and people that embark upon it.
In some cases, the reasons are purely political and in other cases, a religious view can dictate the politics that
lead to war.
One thing for sure the casualties are mostly people and/or infrastructure.
The political reasons for which war is often justified can be as simple as the desire for one nation to be
dominant over another. This maybe due to greed as they want more resources for their country by taking over
the land instead of trading. Take America for example. The reason why many Americans own vehicles with
large engines (5 liters) is as America has largely dominated those areas that produce oil and this has brought
down the price of oil in the USA.
Another political reason is to defend against an aggressor. Sometimes there is an advantage of attacking the
aggressor before the aggressor attacks you. This is known as a pre-emptive strike, but it is war nonetheless.
Not so much lately but over the last few hundred years, there have been many cases of religious wars. Many
religions have been known to go to war to fight in the name of God. This could be to spread the faith or to
protect the faith from an aggressor wishing to wipe it out. For example, the Crusade was an example of a
series of religious wars started by the church in the medieval period. The objective was to recover the Holy
Land from Islamic rule. Jihad is often known as a holy war in Islam even though it has been misinterpreted in
the past few years. An example of this is the first Islamic battle in history known as the Battle Of Badr, this was
referred to as the day of criterion to protect the Muslims from the aggressing tribe of the Quraish who wished
to wipe out the religion of Islam. Many Abrahamic beliefs believe that fighting in the name of God can bring
salvation in the hereafter. We know those as in many holy scriptures it has backed up this point. In the Quran,
it says: “Do not think of those who are killed in Allah's cause as dead. Nay! they are alive, and they are given
sustenance from their Sustainer. (Quran: Al Imraan:169).
Considering the World has gone through two world wars, many people around the world are against conflict.
The brutality of the wars in Afghanistan, Syria, and Israel, as a few examples, have been stark reminders of this.
The arguments against war are all very compelling.
Many countries are now deciding to get rid of nuclear weapons that they may possess. South Africa, Belarus,
Ukraine and Kazakhstan have disposed of all their nuclear arsenal. Also, wars are very costly and affect the
economic state of the country severely.
In addition, many civilians have a very little say in war and do not get to decide on the decision to go to war. In
2003 Britain were going to war against Iraq. Two million people protested against this and the British
government still went to war with Iraq. This is one of the biggest reasons why war is not needed. If the people
do not get a say especially in democracy what is the point in going to war.
Finally, if everyone in the world could just respect others beliefs and avoid conflict and maintain co-operation
everyone could live happily and not need to deal with war in their life and everyone could be happy with what
they already have.
