4. Find the coefficient of T.6 in the expansion of - 2r + 3.22 - 4.73 + 5.79)4.

(Hint: Consider the expansion of (1-y)-2 and put y

5. (a) Show algebraically that

where n. r and T
are positive integers with T < r and t<n- r.

(b) Suppose that 35 people are divided in a random manner into two teams in such a way
that one team contains 10 people and the other team contains 25 people. Suggest two
methods
to calculate the probability that two particular people A and B will be on the
same team?

6. Below is a
probability question taken from a secondary school textbook (REALLY!).

Let A and B be two events. A'

and B' are the complementary events of A and B
respectively. It is given that Pr(A[B')
0.3, Pr(BIA*) = 0.5 and Pr(B) = 0.4.
If Pr(A) = a (where 0 < a < 1),

(i) find Pr(An B'1),

(ii) express Pr(A' N B) in terms of a,

(ini) by using the property (A'U B) = An B'i (de Morgan's law), find the value
of a.

(a) Attempt different parts of this question accordingly.

(b) Explain why this question is wrongly set.

7. (a) In how many ways can 11 O's and 8 e's be arranged in a row so that no two @'s come
together?
((b) In how many ways can 11 men and 8 women stand in a row so that no two women stand
next to each other? (You may give the final answer in scientific notation for this part.)
(c) In how many ways can 11 women and 8 men sit at a round table so that no two men sit
next to each other? (You may give the final answer in
scientific notation for this part.)
8. Find the number of ways you can take 9 balls from

one red ball,

two blue balls,

infinitely many green balls but they must be taken in pairs,

infinitely many orange balls but the number of balls taken must be an odd number, and

infinitely many purple balls but the number of balls taken must be multiple of 3.

(Hint: The 4th bullet point means at least one orange ball must be taken.)

Consider the following possible routes (the lines in the figure) for a person to start from point
A to reach point B. The only condition imposed on the journey is that the person can only
head east or north.

north B

A east

(a) What is the number of possible routes for the person to finish the journey?

(b) What is the number of possible routes for the person to finish the journey with exactly

(i) one turn;

(ii) two turns;

(iffi) three turns;
(iv) four turns;
(v) five turns;
(vi) six turns?
Note: A turn refers to a change in direction from east to north or from north to east.

(c) Interpret the relationship between the answers to parts (a) and (b).

10. (a) Let m be an integer greater than 1.

(i) By considering the coefficient of am in the expansion of (1+x)"? (1+ c)" and
(1+z)2m-p or otherwise, show that

(ii) Making use of the equality r X (m C,) (m-1Cr-1), or otherwise, show that

= m (2m-1Om) and

(b) From a total of m white balls and m black balls (m > 1), m balls are selected at random
and put into a bag A. The remaining m balls are put into another bag B. A ball is then

drawn random from each bag.

(i) Show that if bag A contains white balls, the probability that the two balls drawn
2r (m - r)
have the same colour is
m-

(ii) Show that the probability that the two balls have the same colour is
