1. Assuming the mass M of the largest stone that can be moved by a flowing river depends on
velocity V, density d and acceleration due to gravity g. Using dimensional analysis show that M
varies directly as the sixth power of velocity of flow.
2. If the units of force, velocity and energy are 10N, 100 J and 5 m/s. Find the units of length
and time.
3. The force F is given by expression F= A cos (Bx) + C sin (Dt), where x is displacement
and t is time. What are dimensions of D/ B?
4. The time period of oscillation of simple pendulum is given by T = 2п√L/g. What is the
accuracy in the determination of g if 10cm length has 1 mm accuracy & 0.5 sec time period is
measured from time of 100 oscillations with a watch of 1 sec resolution?
5. If A & B are two vectors and x is the angle between them.

If │A X B│ = √3 (A.B) then find the value of x. (Use equation tool bar)

6. A river flows at 3 m/s and is 300 m wide. A man swims across the river at 2 m/s
perpendicular to the river current. How long does it take to cross the river? How far down the
river does he reach the opposite bank?
7. A car travelling at a speed of 20m/s due north along the highway makes a right turn on to a
side road that heads due east. It takes 50s for the car to complete the turn. At the end of 50
seconds, the car has a speed of 15 m/s along the side road. Determine the magnitude of average
acceleration over the 50 second interval.

8. State and explain law of conservation of linear momentum with the help of an example.
9. A woman weighing 50 kgf stands on a weighing machine placed in a lift. What will be the
reading of the machine, when the lift is

(i) Moving upwards with a velocity of 5m/s

(ii) Moving downward with a uniform acceleration of 1m/s2

10. A train is moving along a horizontal track. A pendulum suspended from the roof makes an
angle of 40 with the vertical. Obtain the acceleration of the train. Tan 40 = 0.07
11. Two vectors A and B are inclined to each other at x. Using parallelogram law of vector
addition, find the magnitude and direction of their resultant. Discuss the special cases, when (i) x=
00, and (ii) x=1800 and (iii) x= 900.

while the back screen remains dry. Why?

(ii) Two persons are pulling the ends of a string in such a way that the string is stretched
horizontally. When a weight of 10 kg is suspended in the middle of the string, the string does not
remain horizontal. Can the persons make it horizontal again by pulling it with a greater force?
Why?

(iii) A projectile of mass m is thrown with velocity v from the ground at an angle of 450 with
the horizontal. What is the change in momentum as it rises to the highest point of the trajectory?

13. What is need of banking of a curved road? Determine the maximum velocity with which a
vehicle can negotiate a circular road of radius r and banked at an angle θ. (Coefficient of friction
is μ)

14. Give reasons


(i) A sailboat cannot be propelled by air blown at the sails from a fan attached to the boat.
(ii) A large size brake on bicycle is as effective as small one.
(iii) Two boys having the same mass are standing on ice skates at some distance apart on a
frictionless surface. A rope is fastened around the body of a boy, and the other end of which is in
the hand of the second boy. When the second boy pulls the rope the two boys move towards each
other with same speed.

15. (i) A body is projected at an angle x with the horizontal with a velocity u
a) Obtain the condition for the maximum horizontal range.
b) Prove the horizontal range of projectile is same when fired at an angle
x and (90-x) with the horizontal.
c) Obtain an expression for maximum height.
(ii) A ball rolls off the top of a stairway with a constant horizontal velocity u. If the steps are h
metre high and w metre wide, show that the ball will just hit the edge of nth step if n= 2hu 2/gw2.

(i) Derive an expression for the centripetal acceleration of a particle moving with uniform
speed v along a circular path of radius r.
(ii) A cyclist is riding with a speed of 27km/h. As he approaches a circular turn on the road of
radius 80m, he applies brakes and reduces his speed at the constant rate of 0.5m/s 2.What is the
magnitude and direction of net acceleration of the cyclist on the circular turn?

17. Spherical ball of mass 20 kg is stationary at the top of the hill of height 100 m.
It rolls down a smooth surface to the ground, then climbs up another hill of height 30 m and
finally rolls down to a horizontal base at a height of 20 m above the ground. Find the velocity
possessed by the ball at its final position.

18. What are conservative and non conservative forces , explain with examples . Show that
gravitational force is conservative force .

19. State and explain work – energy theorem .

20. Obtain an expression for P.E . of a spring and discuss the nature of its variation .
