Instructions:

• This paper contains ten (10) questions in nine (9) pages. Answer all questions.

• Show all your workings and state any assumptions you required.

• All symbols are in standard notation.

1. Let A and B be two non-empty subsets of a suitable universal set E such that n(A) =
24, n(B) = 7 and n(A ∪ B) = 18. Find the value of n(A ∩ B).
(marks 5)
Answer: n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) − n(A ∩ B) =⇒ 18 = 24 + 7 − n(A ∩ B) =⇒
n(A ∩ B) = 13.

2. Let the set A represents healthy people, the set B represents girls, and the set C presents
children. What does A0 ∩ B ∩ C represent? (marks 5)
Answer: Children who are girls but not healthy.

3. Find the intersection point of the following lines.

2x + 3y = 5
3x − y = −20

(marks 10)
Answer: By eq.(1)+3eq.(2) we get (2x + 3y) + (9x − 3y) = 5 − 60 =⇒ 11x = −55 =⇒
x = −5.
Then by eq.(2) y = 3(−5) + 20 = 5.
Hence (−5, 5) is the intersection point of two equations.

4. Find the maximum value of f (x) = −5x2 + 60x + 7 on R. (marks 10)

Answer: f (x) = −5(x − 12x) + 7 = −5(x − 6) + 5 ∗ 36 + 7 = −5(x − 6) + 187.
2 2 2

Thus f takes the maximum at x = 6 and the maximum value is f (6) = 187.

sin 100 + sin 10
5. Find θ such that = tan θ. (marks 10)
sin 100 − sin 10
Answer:
100 + 10 100 − 10
sin 100 + sin 10 2 sin( ) cos( )
= 2 2
sin 100 − sin 10 100 + 10 100 − 10
2 cos( ) sin( )
2 2
sin 55 cos 45
=
cos 55 sin 45
= tan 55.

Hence θ = 55.

6. Let 0 ≤ y ≤ x ≤ 90 . If sin(x + y) = 1 and sin(x − y) =
◦ ◦
then find the value of y.
2
(marks 10)
π
Answer: Since x + y ≤ 180 and sin(x + y) = 1, we get x + y = .
2
π
Thus x = − y.
2 √ √ √
3 π 3 3 π
Then sin(x − y) = =⇒ sin( − 2y) = =⇒ cos(2y) = =⇒ 2y = .
2 2 2 2 6
π
Therefore y = .

7. Let the sides of a triangle are a = 4, b = 6, c = 44 and the angle between a and b is θ.
Find sec θ. (marks 10)
Answer: By cosine rule c2 = z 2 + b2 − 2ab cos θ =⇒ 44 = 16 + 36 − 2 ∗ 4 ∗ 6 cos θ =⇒
cos θ = 16 .
Hence sec θ = 6.

8. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Then find two real numbers x, y such that
1
loga (4a6 b2 c2 ) − loga (2b) = loga (x) + y.
2
(marks 10)
3
2a bc
Answer: 12 loga (4a6 b2 c2 ) − loga (2b) = loga (2a3 bc) − loga (2b) = loga ( ) = loga (a3 c) =
2b
loga (a3 ) + loga (c) = 3 + loga (c).
Hence x = c, y = 3.
7x − 5
9. Find the partial fractions of . (marks 15)
(x3 + 1) (x − 1)
Answer: Let
7x − 5 A B Cx + D
= + + .
(x3 + 1) (x − 1) x − 1 x + 1 (x2 − x + 1)
Then 7x − 5 = A(x3 + 1) + B(x − 1)(x2 − x + 1) + (Cx + D)(x − 1)(x + 1). Then
x = 1 =⇒ 7(1) − 5 = A(2) + 0 + 0 =⇒ A = 1
x = −1 =⇒ 7(−1) − 5 = 0 + B(−2)(3) + 0 =⇒ B = 2

2
constant coefficient: −5 = A − B − D =⇒ −5 = 1 − 2 − D =⇒ D = 4
x3 coefficient: 0 = A + B + C =⇒ 0 = 1 + 2 + C =⇒ C = −3.
7x − 5 1 2 −3x + 4
Hence 3 = + + 2 .
(x + 1) (x − 1) x − 1 x + 1 (x − x + 1)
10. Let 6 and -50 be the 1st and 15th terms of an Arithmetic Progression (AP) respectively.
How many terms of this arithmetic sequence must be considered so that the sum is -640?
(marks 15)
Answer: a = 6, T15 = −50 and Tn = a + (n − 1)d =⇒ −50 = 6 + (15 − 1)d =⇒ d = −4.
And Sn = n2 [2a + (n − 1)d] =⇒ −640 = n2 [12 − (n − 1)4] =⇒ −320 = n(4 − n) =⇒
n2 − 4n − 320 = 0 =⇒ n = 20, −16.
Then number of terms for the summation is 20.
