1.0 OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this document is to determine the load consumption and size the
battery and charger system to meet the operational requirement of 120V AC, 60Hz,
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) System for Instrumentation Loads and HVAC
Panel in Bekok-C platform.

2.0 BASIS AND ASSUMPTIONS

1. The rating of UPS shall be finalized based on 120V AC UPS Load Summary
(refer Appendix B).
2. The AC UPS System shall have 20% spare capacity for future use.
3. The AC UPS System power factor of 0.8 is considered.
4. Inverter efficiency is considered 88%.
5. The AC UPS System configuration shall be 2 x 100% as shown on the 120V AC
UPS Single Line Diagram (Appendix A).
6. Design temperature is considered as 36°C, as the battery is located indoor
inside forced ventilated battery room, temperature correction factor is
considered as 1.00.
7. Battery ageing factor is considered as 10% for Nickel Cadmium Batteries.
8. Battery nominal voltage is considered as 220V DC in the battery sizing
calculations. The number of cells shall be selected based on 15% negative
tolerance and 10% positive tolerance on the battery nominal voltage (110V
DC). The battery end cell voltage shall be 1.10V per cell.
9. Battery Autonomy times for the UPS System shall be as shown on the UPS
Load Summary (Appendix B).
10. Battery type shall be Valve Regulated, Nickel-Cadmium Gas Recombination
Type.
11. The capacity rating factor, Kt, is the ratio of rated ampere-hour capacity (at
a standard time rate, at 25°C, and to a standard end-of-discharge voltage)
of a cell, to the amperes that can be supplied by that cell for t minutes at
25°C and to a given end-of-discharge voltage. Kt factors are available from
the battery manufacturer, or may be calculated using this formula.
Kt = Kt2 - (Kt2 - Kt1 ) x (t2 – t)
(t2 – t1)

12. Battery sizing performed are in accordance with IEEE 1115.

13. Battery bank configuration shall be 2 x 50%

3.0 AC UPS SIZING CALCULATION

Total 120V AC UPS loads with 20% = 39.18kVA (Refer to Appendix B)

SELECTED AC UPS RATING:

40kVA, 120V, 1 PHASE, 60Hz, UPS SYSTEM (Refer to Appendix E)

4.0 BATTERY SIZING CALCULATION

Specification requirements:
Battery Type : Low Maintenance, Nickel-Cadmium
Gas Recombination Type
Nominal System Voltage: Un : 220V DC
Cell Voltage at the end of discharge (ECV) : 1.10V

As per Battery manufacturer catalogue

Float Charge Voltage (Vf) = 1.43V
Boost Charge Voltage (VB) = 1.45V

Determination of number of cells:

Number of cells requires (NC) = Umin
ECV

Minimum DC voltage shall be based on the negative tolerance of 15%

Umin = 220 x 0.85
= 187 V

Number of cells selected is,NC = 187

1.10
= 170 cells

Battery End Cell Voltage, Uend cell = ECV x NC

= 1.10 x 170
= 187 V

Battery Float Voltage, Ufloat = Vf x N C

= 1.43 x 170
= 243.1 V

Battery Boost Voltage, Umax = VB x NC

= 1.45 x 170
= 246.5 V

Therefore the Battery Voltage range shall be 187V, 243.1 V ~ 246.5 V with 170
number of cells and ECV = 1.10V

5.0 AC UPS LOAD DETAILS

Load details as per Appendix B.

Current, I = Power (kW)
Umin x Invefficiency

Battery banks shall be configured for 2 x 50%. Inverter efficiency is considered as

0.88%

The loads are divided into 3 autonomy time:

1) 1 min – 30 min Load (Ia) = 31350 W
Considering 50% load on each battery bank = 15675
187 x 0.88
= 95.25 A

2) 30 min – 45 min Load (Ib) = 21700 W

Considering 50% load on each battery bank = 10850
187 x 0.88
= 65.93 A

3) 45 min – 180 min Load (Ic) = 3600 W

Considering 50% load on each battery bank = 1800
187 x 0.88
= 10.94 A

Hence, the load shall be:

For 30 minutes loads = 95.25 A
For 45 minutes loads = 65.93 A
For 180 minutes loads = 10.94 A

6.0 DUTY CYCLE DIAGRAM

Refer Appendix B

7.0 BATTERY AH CALCULATION

The following factors are considered in the final AH calculations

Ageing factor - 10%
Battery nominal voltage - 220V DC
Battery type - Valve Regulated, Nickel-Cadmium
Gas Recombination Type
Battery bank - 2 x 50%

Refer Appendix C for battery sizing calculations.

Selected battery size based on the above calculation

Battery Make & Model = ALCAD, VTX1M 150

Number of cells per battery bank = 187 cells
Selected AH capacity = 150 AH
Battery configuration = 2 x 50%

8.0 CHARGER/RECTIFIER SIZING CALCULATION

Charger/Rectifier for UPS System: The rated current of a UPS rectifier shall be
computed by the following equation:

 Inv.kVA x 1000 x PF 
A = SF   + BIF  AhBatt 
 Inv.EffBattFloat x VBatt   RechargeTime 
 Float   

Where:
A = Ampere rating of the rectifier output
SF = Service factor(considered as 20% spare of UPS load)
PF = Power factor of UPS load (use PF = 0.8 lagging)
Inv.EffBatt Float = Known efficiency of the inverter at battery float voltage
VBatt Float = Overall battery float voltage
(Float charge voltage x No. of cells)
Inv. kVA = Rated kVA of the UPS inverter
Ahbatt = Battery capacity (Ampere Hour) for nickel cadmium
battery
Recharge Time = Required Recharge time of the system battery
BIF = Battery inefficiency factor is considered as 1.0

Therefore:
Current to the inverter = (Inv.kVA x 1000 x power factor)
(Vbatt.Float x inverter efficiency)
= (40 x 1000 x 0.8) / (243.1 x 0.88)
= 149.58 A

Battery charging current = BIF x Battery AH x 2

Recharge Time
= 2 x 15 A (As per manufacturer
catalogue. Refer Appendix D)
= 30 A

Therefore total rectifier current required to supply the load and charging the
battery:
= Load current + battery charging current
= 149.58 + 30
= 179.58 A

Rectifier minimum size = 200 A, 220V DC

However the final rectifier size shall be determined by the UPS vendor based on
battery manufacturers recommendation.

9.0 CONCLUSION

UPS Size : 40kVA, 120V AC, 1 Phase, 60 Hz (2 x 100%)

Rectifier Minimum Size : 200 A, 220V DC (2 x 100%)

24
Chloride Apodys AC UPS 316P-1ph

Option Option Function / description

No. name
Two-steps Limit the inrush current on starting up the system to 8 times the nominal input current (15 times as standard).
1
start-up
contactor Addition of a two-steps start-up device to limit the inrush current due to the magnetisation of the transformer. The
device uses a timing relay to firstly magnetise the input transformer through resistors. The contactor is then
switched to close position to allow starting up the charger part of the UPS.
Please note that the rectifier dimensions mentioned in this document may not be maintained with this option.
Reserve Protect the reserve supply input by a double-pole circuit breaker.
2
supply circuit
breaker
Reserve Provide full galvanic isolation between the input and the output of the UPS.
3
supply
transformer This transformer is of the type 1-phase input / 1-phase output. We recommend you not to use 3-phase input / 1-
phase output transformer to avoid unbalanced currents on the phases.

This option may affect the overall dimensions of the system.

Reserve Adjust the reserve supply voltage.

4
supply The reserve supply voltage adjustment ensures the output voltage is within the tolerance accepted by the
stabiliser connected AC load.
The stabiliser can be of the electronic type or electro-mechanical type.

This option may affect the overall dimensions of the system.

Stabiliser Isolate the output of the stabiliser to be able to safely maintain it.
5
output
isolator This isolator is usually a fully rated switch. By opening the reserve input circuit breaker and this isolator, it is possible
to completely isolate the reserve stabilizer.
Inverter Pre-charge the inverter capacitors to avoid high circulating current when starting up the inverter.
6
capacitors
automatic The capacitors pre-charge device uses a parallel resistor to firstly supply the DC capacitors during a pre-set time. The
pre-charge contactor is then switched to close position to start-up the inverter. This device is also recommended when using
the Black Start option (N° 13).

Physical Isolate physically the reserve supply from the UPS System.
7
segregation
The reserve bypass supply can be physically apart from the main parts of the UPS system to increase people’s safety
when maintaining the UPS system. This option is achieved by cabling the reserve supply components (e.g. circuit
breaker, transformer, stabilizer) in a separate By-Pass cabinet.

This option affects the overall dimensions of the system.

AC Ensure the distribution, protection and segregation of the AC load.
8
distribution
Distribution boards may be included in the UPS system or installed in a separate cabinet. These distribution boards
may be customised (form 1 to form 4) according to the customer’s requirements. MCB, MCCB, or fuses are
available.

This option may affect the overall dimensions of the system.

AC earth fault Monitor the insulation resistance on the AC output circuit.
9
alarm
Used in conjunction with the isolation transformer, this option is made of an electronic circuit CIC (or equivalent). It
is fitted into the UPS cubicle and delivers remote indication by a changeover voltage-free contact. Local indication
(inside the cabinet) by two LED’s is available on the PCB (or moulded device) to indicate the polarity on fault. A local
test push-button is also available on the device to simulate fault conditions.

25
Chloride Apodys AC UPS 316P-1ph

Option Option Function / description

No. name
Low voltage Protect the battery from deep discharges and thus enhance battery lifetime.
10
disconnect
contactor The LDV option includes an output contactor controlled by voltage relay in order to disconnect the load at the end of
(LDV) battery autonomy period. Reconnection of the load is automatic at the charger restoration and upon the
resumption of normal conditions.
Earth leakage Monitor the insulation resistance on the DC bus.
11
monitor
(DC earth fault Used in conjunction with the isolation transformer, this option is made of an electronic circuit “Chloride CIC” (or
alarm) equivalent). It is fitted into the UPS cubicle and delivers remote indication by a changeover voltage-free contact.
Local indication (inside the cabinet) by two LED’s is available on the PCB (or moulded device) to indicate the polarity
on fault. A local test push-button is also available on the device to simulate fault conditions (+ or -).
Battery Prevent any short-circuit that could occur on the battery circuit and therefore prevent the battery cables from fire
12
protection risks. This option is either fitted into the UPS cabinet or externally (battery cabinet or battery protection box). It can
not be used with the option N°14.

3 types of protections are made available:

− Fuse: fully rated fuse with auxiliary contact for the monitoring of its operating status.
− Fuse switch: fully rated fuse switch with auxiliary contact for the monitoring of its operating status.
− Circuit breaker: fully rated circuit breaker and an additional auxiliary contact for the monitoring of its position.
Black Start Start-up of the UPS (inverter part only) to provide power to the load, even when the Main is not present on the input
13
of the UPS.

This option is made of a key switch to force the battery circuit breaker Q5 to close. In this way, the battery circuit is
powered, thus allowing the inverter to start thanks to the battery current.
External Protect the battery circuit as for option 12, but can not be used in conjunction with option N°12.
14
battery
protection The battery protection device is housed in a wall-mounted metal box for battery systems mounted on racks and it is
supplied with the battery cabinet, when the battery is fitted in a matching cubicle. Furthermore, this device serves as
a safety element for the cross section of the power cable between the UPS and the remotely placed battery system.
Therefore, the wall-mounted box must be installed as close as possible to the battery and the length of cables
between battery and UPS system must be the shortest.
Low THDi Reduce the harmonic currents rejected on the Mains.
15
The standard 6-pulse rectifier is replaced by the standard 12-pulse rectifier, with or without additional filter,
according to the THDi requirements.

This option affects the overall dimensions of the system.

Input / output Protect and isolate the input and the output of the UPS system.
16
protections
3 types of protections are made available:
− Switch: the standard configuration includes a fully rated switch with auxiliary contact for the monitoring of its
operating status.
− Fuse switch: fully rated fuse switch with auxiliary contact for the monitoring of its operating status.
− Circuit breaker: fully rated circuit breaker and an additional auxiliary contact for the monitoring of its position.
