What is a job interview?
A job interview is a formal conversation between a job
applicant and a representative of an employer, typically a
hiring manager, human resources personnel, or potential
future supervisor.
The Purpose
The primary purpose of a job
interview is to assess the
candidate's qualifications, skills,
experience, and suitability for a
specific job position within the
organization.

Interview!
1. Make a great first impression
Appearance, dress neatly, show confident,
and smile during the job interview. Also, don’t come late!
2. Practice good manner and body language
Make a firm handshake if you do the handshaking with
the interview.
3. Answer the questions consiely and stay focused
The job interview time is limited, so be mindful of speaking. Practicing your
answer before the interview will help you stay focused.
4. Don’t speak negative things about your previous job

When discussing your strengths in a job interview, it's
essential to focus on qualities that are relevant to the
position.

"One of my key strengths is adaptability. In my previous


role, I was tasked with learning a new project
management system within a short timeframe. I quickly
familiarized myself with the system and trained my
team, ensuring a smooth transition and improved
efficiency."
3. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
When discussing weaknesses, it's important to present
them in a way that shows self-awareness and a
commitment to improvement. Avoid mentioning
weaknesses that are critical to the job you're applying
for.

"I've realized that I can be overly critical of my work due


to a tendency toward perfectionism. However, I've
learned to balance this by setting realistic expectations
and focusing on continuous improvement rather than
striving for perfection."

5. Why are you leaving your current role / Why do you
leave your job?

When asked about leaving a previous job, be honest but positive. Even if
you left a job under trying circumstances, keep your response short and
upbeat. Here are some suggestions:

I’m looking for a company that better aligns with my values.
I’m excited to find a company where I can grow my career.
I’ve decided to go down a different career path.
My position was downsized, but I’m looking forward to a new opportunity.
I’m excited to explore a culture in line with my personality.
I’m ready to take on a new challenge with an innovative company.
I’ve aspired to work for this company and seized the chance to apply.
6. How Do You Handle Stress and Pressure?

The best way to respond to this question is to share an example of how


you have successfully handled stress in a previous position.
Consider mentioning how a little stress can be a helpful motivator for
you. Try to provide an example of a time when the stress of a difficult
project helped you be a more creative and productive worker.

I try to respond to situations rather than to stress. That way, I can
handle the situation without becoming too stressed. For example,
when I deal with an unsatisfied customer, rather than focusing on
feeling stressed, I focus on the task at hand. I believe my ability to
communicate effectively with customers during these moments
helps reduce my own stress. I think it also reduces any stress the
customer may feel.
7. Where do you see yourself in five years? / What Are
Your Career Goals?

Interviewers want to know whether you plan to stay at the company


for a while, or if you're likely to leave at the first opportunity.
Asking future-focused questions during interviews is very common.
For employers, this tactic helps reveal if you have any long-term
visions or plans.
Prepare an answer that focuses on your career goals as they relate to
the company you are interviewing for.
You can divide those goals up into short-term goals and long-term
goals. Be prepared to share some of these aspirations with the
interviewer.
SAMPLE ANSWER
My current short-term goal is to develop and use my marketing and
communications skills in a job like this one. However, I eventually
want to develop into a position that allows me to continue to use
these skills while also managing a marketing group. I will prepare for
this goal by taking on leadership positions in team projects, and by
developing my professional career through attending leadership
conferences such as the one put on annually by your company.
8. What are your salary expectations?

Salary talks can be sensitive, but they’re necessary. Research a


competitive salary before you go into your interview, so you don’t aim
too high or low. There are several free online salary calculators that
can provide you with a reasonable range based on your job title,
employer, experience, skills, and location.
Be sure to mention years of experience or specific certifications that
enhance your value.
SAMPLE ANSWER

I'm open to discussing what you believe to be a fair salary


for the position. However, based on my previous salary, my
knowledge of the industry, and my understanding of this
geographic area, I'd expect a salary in the general range of
SX to SY. Again, I'm open to discussing these numbers with
you.
9. Do you have any questions for us?

Typically, this is the last question of the interview, and it might be


tempting to say, “No. I’m all set.” However, this question allows you to
show your interest in the position. Some questions you could ask
include:
- What are the day-to-day tasks involved in this role?
- How do you evaluate the progress of this role?
- What ongoing educational or training opportunities could I pursue in this role?
- Where do you see the company in five years?
- How would you describe the company culture?
