Coordination and Response

Duration: 5 hours (5 classes x 1 hour per class)

Date Topic
Lesson 1 Central Nervous System
Reflex Arc
Lesson 2 Neurotransmission
Sense Organs : The Eye
Lesson 3 Hormones in Humans
Homeostasis
Lesson 4 Blood Glucose Regulation
Temperature Regulation
Lesson 5 Plant Tropism

Lesson 1

Understand that coordination is the ability to detect

and respond to internal and external stimuli

State that :
● Electrical impulses travel along neurons
● The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord
● The PNS consists of the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord

Describe the role of the nervous system

Identify the three types of neurons

Explain a reflex action as a means of automatically and rapidly

integrating and coordinating stimuli with the responses of effectors
Lesson 2

Describe a synapse as a junction between two neurons

Describe the events at the synapse during neurotransmission

State that synapses ensure that impulses travel in one direction only

Describe the:

● Structure of the eye

● Functioning of the eye
● Pupil reflex
● Accomodation

Describe the distribution and functions of rods and cones in the retina of a human

Lesson 3

Understand that a hormone:

● Is a chemical substance produced by a gland

● Is carried by the blood plasma

● Has an effect (causes a response) on a target organ

● Describe the chemical control of metabolic

activity by adrenaline

Understand that homeostasis is the maintenance

of a constant internal environment.
Lesson 4

Describe the temperature regulation

Explain the effects of:

● Sweating
● Vasodilation
● Vasoconstriction

Describe the control of glucose content of the blood by:

● The liver
● Insulin and glucagon from the pancreas
● Consider the general role of negative feedback in homeostasis

Lesson 5

Understand geotropism is a growth response towards

or away from the stimulus of gravity by plants.

Understand phototropism is a growth response towards

or away from the stimulus of light by plants.

Describe the:

● Chemical control of plant growth by auxins

● The effects of synthetic plant hormones used as weedkillers
● Consider the use of hormones in food production

Describe in terms of auxins regulating differential growth
