Geometric Construction: Polygons
Objective

To construct triangles, squares, rectangles, regular pentagons, and regular hexagons

(M7GE-IIIh-i-1).

Learning Activity
Sketch, Draw or Construct?

Activity 1 Sketch a triangle with two (2) equal sides. Do not use any geometrical tool like
ruler or protractor. Do a freehand sketch.
Are you certain that the two sides of the triangle that you have sketched has
equal lengths? Why or why not?

Activity 2 Draw a triangle with two (2) equal sides. Use a ruler to measure the lengths of
the sides.
Were you able to draw a triangle with two equal sides? Why is that so?

Activity 3 Construct a triangle with two (2) equal sides. Use a compass and a
straightedge. Do not use a ruler or a protractor.
Are you confident that the triangle you have constructed has two equal sides?

Sketch, draw and construct have specific meanings in Geometry.

Can you differentiate one from the others?

Euclidean Geometry is the study of geometry based on

the assumptions of Euclid. He established the basic rules for
constructions and stated explicitly that a formal construction is to
be done using unmarked straightedge and a compass which are
known as Euclidean tools.

EXERCISES

Materials: compass, straightedge or ruler

Instructions: Follow the steps in the solution on a separate sheet of paper.

Hands-On No.1
Construct triangle BOX such that ¿ 4 cm , BX=6 cm and OX =5 cm .

Solution:
1. Draw a line. Locate point B on the line. Using 6 cm
a compass opened at 6 cm , put one tip of the
B X
compass at point B and arc through the line
to locate point X .

4 cm
2. Using a compass, draw arc 1 with center at B
and with radius length of 4 cm .

3. With center at X and radius length of 5 cm, draw 5 cm
arc 2. Name the intersection of arc 1 and arc 2
as point O.

Hands-On No.2: Construct Square LIVE.

Solution: I
1. Using your compass, draw a circle and
label the center O.
2. Using your straightedge, draw a diameter
of the circle, labelling the endpoints L and V.
3. Construct the perpendicular bisector L V
of the diameter (See LAS No.4 Hands-On No.1).
4. Label the points where the bisector intersects
the circle as I and E.
5. Connect points L to I to V to E to form the square.

Hands-On No.3: Construct a Regular Pentagon JIBAH.

Solution:

1. Draw a line segment AB.

2. Using a compass, draw two circles, Circle 1
and Circle 2, whose centers are at points A
and B respectively, both with radius length AB.

3. Name the intersections of the two circles

as point C and point D. Connect CD.

4. Using a compass, draw another circle,

Circle 3, with center at C and radius length AB.

5. Name the intersections with the two 1 2

circles as points E, G, and F. Connect
EG extending to intersect Circle 2 and
name it Point I. Connect FG extending to
intersect Circle 1 and name it Point H.

Note that in the process, you have also 3

constructed equilateral ∆ABC. Can you see
three more equilateral triangles in the figure?
6. Using a compass, draw another two circles, Circle 4 and Circle 5, whose centers are at
points H and I respectively, both with radius length AB.

7. Name the intersection of Circles 4 and 5 at the top as point J. Connect the points, J to I to B
to A to H and to J.

hexagon and label all parts.
