THE USEFULNESS OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE MIDST OF COVID – 19

PANDEMIC TO THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic is prompting many schools and universities to

abruptly and comprehensively adopt online learning, remote work and other activities

to help contain the spread of the virus with this, technologies play an important role to

support works and educations to continuously working and help students attain their

academic goals affordably and efficiently. Moreover, through the quick transition to

online education in response to the coronavirus threat is a reminder that digital

technology brings many benefits and can play an essential role in managing and

reducing the risks caused by the lockdown during the pandemic and even after the

pandemic. (Richter, 2020).

Furthermore, this pandemic has deeply impacted all spheres of education,

especially with social distancing norms in place (Dhawan, 2020).So, students need

help completing their academic terms and earning credentials during this

extraordinary crisis and EDUCAUSE data show that student success technologies can

provide digital sources of held and support. This EDUCAUSE data from 2019 reveal

that many, but far from all, institutions, students, faculty, and staff are ready and able

to use these technologies during the pandemic.

This study focused on the usefulness of technology in the midst of COVID-19

pandemic to the high school students the sources is mainly taken from the senior high

school students of Bula National High School. Thus, the researcher survey delimits to

obtain the students response on the study.

The study determines the usefulness of technology in the midst of pandemic as

a new bridge to reconnect again. Thus, the researcher has an objective that need to

achieve which is to identify the usefulness of technology especially in the midst of

pandemic and in the difficulties that the students experiencing.

Statement of the Problem

The focus of this study is to found out the usefulness of technology in the

midst of pandemic to the high school students and on how it is more productive and

effective in today's crisis.

Thus, the study will sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the importance of technology for those students in a remote areas?

2. How does technology affect student learning in today's pandemic?

3. How technology prepares students for the real word?

Scope and Delimitation

This study determines the usefulness of technology as primary sources in

today's pandemic. Hence, participants of this study is the grade 11 students because

they are the appropriate person who can tell what the different use of technology in

the midst of pandemic we facing right now. Furthermore, they are the one who have

enough knowledge in this study. Thus, the researcher must need to be responsible and
hands on in gathering the data and asking some relevant information to the

respondent.

Moreover, the four sections of grade 11 students in Bula National High

School was the scope of the researcher in which they are the one who will answering

the questions to gathered the needed data to accomplish the study. Thus, this study

was limited to the grade 11 students with their age, gender and grade and section. This

information will be enough data in identifying the results.

Significance of the Study

TEACHERS-it is important for the teacher to know the usefulness of technology

especially in today's pandemic because they will be having a big role in shaping the

students mind, they will be the one who will important their own ideas and awareness

when it comes to the topic of the study that will help the researcher to gain some ideas

that can use to improve the study.

PARENTS-This will help to parents in guiding their students to use the technology

with limitations and at the same time they will give supports and help their students to

determine the usefulness of technology in studying.

STUDENTS-The students will provide the needed data because they will be the

respondent of the study. The students also will be the one who will deal the situations

and can complete the researcher concerned in the study.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION-The findings of the study may help them to know

what are the use of technology in education especially that the education system today

is on the remote system that the primary needs is technology to cope up and interact
w/ the teacher and students. So, this study will be serving as a basis to take action if

the use of technology would be abuse of the students.

FUTRE RESEARCHER-The findings of this study will serve as a evidences that and

add for their study and also will give them a background. Thus, the data presented

May they used to come up a new study because the data and findings of the study will

serves as their source of information.

OTHERS-this study will serve as awareness on how to use the technology, and also

they will help them to seek and get information about the usefulness of technology.
CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies which have

relevance to the research study.

Related literature

Due to the rapid expansiveness of technology and its wide array of uses, the

incorporation of technology in learning has become a viable and inexpensive option.

Almost three-quarters of Americans, 73% believe that investing in innovation and

advanced technology sciences in education is the key to the country's long-term

success (Harris Interactive, 2009).

The pandemic has generated a rapid demand for effort to use innovative

technologies to cope with damage from COVID-19 on our life (O'Leary,

2020).Hence, the pandemic has not Only raised opportunities to advance technology-

based solutions but also provide a rare opportunity to study the research band practice

plot technology, including information management, work practices, and design and

use of technologies (Swim, 2020).

According to (Andreessen and the Becker, 2009), technology aids student

expression. Present what they have learner. They can use software to make

presentations and project. This makes them more interested in the subject and leads to

better retention of information. With technological aids, they can make easy to -
remember notes and a creative presentation of the information they have acquired, It

won't be wrong to say that application of technology has made a student's life easy.

Technology has revolutionized the field of education the importance of

technology in school cannot be ignored, In fact, with the onset of computers in

education; it has become easier for teachers to impart knowledge and for students to

acquire it. The use of technology has made the process of teaching and learning

enjoyable (Muir-Harzing, 2008).

According to (Mayer,Griffith, Jurkowits, and Rothman,2008),it is important y

realize that failure to parent multimedia technology in an appropriate from can lead to

negative results the perception of display on a multimedia application is significant

importance in terms of transfer learning. In fact, too much multimedia stimulation can

interfere with the deeper cognitive processing that is critical to learning.

Related studies

On the Journal of Athens Academy, 2009 refer that education technology can

make student study more interesting and enjoyable. The changing images and use of

special effects among other can reduce boredom on the part of learners. Furthermore,

technology can also promote student-student interaction, student-teacher interaction,

and teacher-student interaction, if a pre-instructional plan incorporates principles such

as stimulus variation, feedback, reinforcement, and learner's participation.

In the field of Computer-Assisted language learning (CALL), the term "next

Generation “has been clearly defined by Prensky (2010) who states that Net

Generation members are "digital natives “since they "spent their entire lives

surrounded by and using computers, videogames, digital music players, video cams,
cell phones and the other tools of the digital age" which make them different from the

baby boomer generation.

It's easier to store information. Computer enable better and more robust

storage of information .Compact memory devices have replaced network and a

keyboard and Computer mouse are the new writing devices what may have required

hundred pages of a book can be compacted into a tiny memory chip. It take hours to

write, but it takes only second to type, Storing data has become much easier, owing to

technology.(Paraad2 and Jones,2008).

According to (Trotter, 2008), the technology has eliminated space and time

constraints online education and distance learning. Even if students are geographically

for away from each other, they can be a part of one classroom though not physically

but virtually, they can. In today pandemic, many educational institutes offer online

courses, which eliminate time and space constraints in acquiring education.

The edited book by Oxford and Oxford (2009), entitled Net Generation is a

book describes empirical studies involving different innovative technologies and state

-of-the-art tools, offering pedagogical ideas, effective strategies, and useful

suggestions on how these technologies could be applied to enhance teaching and

learning. Moreover, educational technology usage in practice teaching can make

instruction to be much more interesting and enjoyable.

Theoretical Framework

According to instrumentalization theory, this theory holds that technology

must be analyzed at to levels ,the level of Our original functional relation to reality

and the level of design and implementation.at the first level, it seek and find
affordances that can be mobilized in devices and systems by decontextualizing the

object of experience and reducing them to their useful properties. At the second level,

it designs are introduced that can be integrated with other already existing devices and

systems and with various social constraints such as ethical and aesthetic principles.

According to Heidegger's history of being, the modern "revealing "is biased by

a tendency to take every obey as a potential brawn material for technical action.

Objects enter our experience only is so far as we notice their usefulness is the

technological system.

According to Dereck Rowntree (1979), educational technology is concerned

with the sign and education of curricula and learning experiences and with the

Problems of implementing and renovating them. Furthermore, education technologists

would not therefore consider the computer as just another piece of equipment. If

educational technology is concerned W/thinking carefully about teaching and

learning, then a computer has a contribution to make irrespective of its use as a means

of implementation, for the design of computer based learning environment gives us a

new perspective on the mature of teaching and learning and indeed on general

education objectives. (O'Shea and Self, 1983)

Base on Osman (2008) a transfer theory, the effect perspective: Positive VS

Negative transfer. Positive transfer is the primary goal of education. What is learned

in one context helps enhance learning in a different context. In contrast, the negative

transfer is a type of error in learning where a previously learned context interferes

with the acquisition of an adaptive response to a new context that is similar to the first

(Cree and Macaulay,2000).

Conceptual Framework

The story primary aim is to know the possible outcome of the research study

to know the usefulness of technology in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic to the high

school students.

TECHNOLOGY - the use of science to invent things or to solve problems.in the

study, the technology is the main solutions to still continue in studying and this is the

main source of information.

USE - the act of using something and the student use technology to comply all the

needed courses.
CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design

This research use mixed research methodology, according to

(Creswell,J.W.2007),mixed methods reset is a methodology for conduct research that

involves collecting, analyzing, and integrating quantitative and qualitative research in

a single study or a longitudinal program of inquiry. Thus this will used for gathering

and processing the data that is being collected from the respondent, and the researcher

will used statistical formula to compute the gathered data.to explain well the possible

results about the usefulness of technology.

Respondent of the Study

The respondent in this study focuses to the high school students to be specific

is the grade 11 students of Bula National High School. Furthermore, the grade 11

have four section which are the grade 11-A, grade 11-B, grade 11-C, and grade 11-

D.although, these four sections have study to be a respondents. Through Calmorin's

formula, the 420 students was the only Cover of the studies. Thus, the 420 will be

divided into 4 and the grade 11-Prudence and grade 11-loyalty has 29 representatives

in their section, while the grade 11-love and grade 11-obedience has 28 representative

only. Therefore, the respondent is only limited to 132 students to answer the questions

of the study.
The research used the stratified random sampling under probability sampling

or scientific sampling. This is the appropriate design because to the used of

homogeneous strata included the age, gender, grade and section and etc. which is

belong to the profile of the respondents.

Instruments of the study

The researcher creates a questionnaire with significant questions to help the

researcher gather the needed information.

The questionnaire was the main instrument used in weathering data. Aside

from the questionnaire, casual interview were also used to seek more information

related on this study. The researcher adopted the instrument that mentioned above

which those will help the researcher to gain insights on the usefulness of technology

to the high school students.

The questionnaire has two parts: the first part of the questionnaire is the

respondents profile and the second part is the provided questions for them.

Validity and Reliability

This is to determine the validity and reliability. The researcher will conduct a

research study about the usefulness of technology in the midst of pandemic to the high

school students. The researcher will conduct an interview and gave questionnaires to

the respondent, then afterwards the researcher validate on the questionnaires to know

how many respondent answered in the study.

For the meantime, the researcher need to assure that the study was securing a

permit in the school administration to conduct a survey. After securing the said

permit, become possible. Thus, throughout the study the researcher will analyze all
the gathered data and the researcher will use statistical tool to found out the results of

study. This will also serve the basis to determine the usefulness of technology in the

midst of COVID-19 pandemic to the high school students.

Statistical Treatment

The statistical tools that researcher used to tabulated the gathered data are the

percentage technique and weighted mean

The percentage technique is the most frequent ways to represent statistics data

into percentage rate. In the study, this statistical tool used to tabulate the percentage

rate of the profile of the respondents and the hatter data.

P = n/N×100

Where: P = percentage

n = number of the respondents

N = population of the total respondents.

The weighted mean is used to measure the value of data to the study. This is

used to get the number of response of the respondents. Thus, this will be the way of

finalizing the results in this study.

WM = TWF/N

Where:

WM = weighted mean

TWF = total weighted frequency

N = total population or respondents
