When I was younger, I used to diligently play football in my building every day from
6pm to 8pm, with my mom having to force my reluctant self to come home. As I grew
up, I could not play as actively as I used to due to my time constraint, but the feeling of
dribbling past an opponent never stops making me feel enthralled. It would make me
happy if I could help others feel the same way and so, I can affirmatively say that I hold
sports very close to my heart. It is the Sergio Busquets to my FC Barcelona that is the
backbone of my life.
I am a strong sports enthusiast and am well versed with the basic knowledge of several
sports which is necessary, as one of the duties of an IPM Sports Committee member is
to officiate the matches. Being an active player of football, basketball, squash, cricket
and table tennis, I have imbibed a strong spirit of sportsmanship and I intend to make
sure we all respect the sport and each other while playing. Having represented my school
at a national level football tournament and being an active part of my school football
team for 9 years, as well as representing the IIM football team in Ranbhoomi 6.0, I have
acquired the necessary people skills to be able to soundly get my point across whilst
understanding others’ perspective. Most importantly I possess the traits of being able to
think on my feet and being able to work well under pressure which I feel are crucial for
this post. As I am confident in my knowledge of sports and ability to conduct the various
sports events, I have the courage to take on this responsibility and assert my authority
when needed to avoid adverse situations. We are gifted with amazing sports facilities and
with the keen interest I have seen from the batch, I feel my abilities will be able to
improve the already good events of the IPM Sports Committee. Due to all this, I strongly
believe that I am a suitable candidate for this position.
When it comes to sport related duties, I am very confident in my abilities and tend
to trust myself a lot, which is why I find it hard to delegate work to others and end
up taking too much responsibility myself.
I am uncomfortable with ambiguity and prefer following tasks which have well-
defined instructions as I am comfortable carrying out tasks that have a clearly laid
down path. However, I intend on stepping out of my comfort zone and learning to
trust my abilities in being able to decipher instructions which are unclear.
I tend to get impatient when deadlines are not met and get very irritated when
events are not able to start on time. I strongly believe that everyone’s time is
valuable and is to be respected.
On speaking with several girls of my batch, I have come to understand that there is an
interest in learning how the sport is played but lack of participation arises due to lack of
knowledge and experience, which is why I propose this idea to combat this issue:
The IPM Sports Committee selects students who are knowledgeable and skilled in a
certain sport to act as a coach and teach the girls interested the rules and regulations of
the sport as well as teach them how to play on a regular basis. On the coordinator’s
approval, we can incentivise the coach with a LOR.
After the coaches for each sport have been decided, a Google form
will be floated out to all the girls so that they can fill in for the sports
they are interested in learning. Based on the responses, a timetable
will be devised to conduct the coaching.
If the model functions well, we can make it universal which will help
with the ultimate aim of increasing general participation in sports.
A few other measures we can take to increase participation are:
Provision of refreshments for the participants during the various sports
leagues.
Conduction of IPM Athletic Meet (mentioned in answer 3) for
participants disinterested in contact and racquet sports.
In the case of team sports, several participants in leagues are under
confident in their abilities and tend to underperform. This is because
there is very less time between the end of the auction and
commencement of the first league match. Underperforming takes a
toll on them and they might refrain from participating again. I would
push for a 2-3 day gap after the auction and before the league starts so
that the team gets to practice and get to know each other, improve their
teamwork and coordination and instil a sense of confidence in the
players.
3) List new events that you would like to conduct during your tenure. Also, specify how
you would want to go about conducting them.
Football
a) Volta football:
We all miss playing the small 3v3 and 4v4 football games in our hostel. This is
essentially a futsal game conducted with small goals that reach up to the knee. This
is a dream come true for everyone that loves dribbling the football and a platform
for all to showcase their skills while the audience enjoys a high intensity futsal
game.
RULES:
No goalkeeper (no hands allowed)
Height of goal is till knees. Goals can be made using cones or if budget permits,
we buy the small goalposts that reach till just the knees.
3v or 4v4(preferred) format
The venue I have in mind is the basketball court with one half as the entire pitch.
Based on the participation a tournament format can be decided.
b) X- accuracy:
Venue: Cricket stadium
A long- range shooting contest with cardboard cut-outs on different places in the
goalpost. Different cut-outs will have different point values signifying that hitting
the cut-out will give those many points. To paint a vague picture:
Point values can be decided and an event can be conducted along the same lines.
Cricket:
a) Bowl-out:
Similar to the 2007 ICC T20 India vs Pakistan match a bowl-out can be conducted
wherein a contestant bowls at the stumps with no batsman present. Each contestant
will get 6 deliveries to bowl and judged accordingly.
Athletics:
Athletic events can be held at the cricket stadium to garner the interest of those not
interested in playing sports. I feel we will attract a generous amount of female
participation. Some events that can be conducted for all are:
Tennis:
Precision Service:
Contestants will aim at targets using their tennis service.
Rally Royale:
Participants will be randomly divided into teams of 2 and they will contest to see
who can have the longest rally.
Table Tennis
Ping-Pong:
A Ping-Pong league with the traditional ping pong rules.
Basketball:
a) Blind Hooping:
It is essentially a game of Horse with contestants wearing a blindfold.
The rules of Horse are as follows:
The order in which contestants shoot will be decided.
Contestant 1 will shoot the basketball into the hoop from a location of his choice.
If he/she converts, the following contestants will have to also shoot it in the hoop
from the same location.
Failure to convert will lead to the contestant receiving a ‘H’. Subsequently the
contestant will receive an ‘O’ if he/she misses again.
After the contestant reaches ‘HORSE’, he/she will be eliminated.
GENERAL:
Tour d’IIM:
This is a team treasure hunt around the campus challenging the sports knowledge
and skills of contestants. The clues can be riddles or facts about sports which hint
at a specific location on campus. A specific task related to sports needs to be
performed to get the next clue. A few suggestions of the tasks could be:
GetFit Campaign:
Walkathons and marathons can be organised to in collaboration with the social club
to promote a social cause.
4) Keeping in mind the current state of the sports facilities on campus, suggest changes
you would like to bring about to the same.
The current inventory room is in Sr-9 which is inaccessible to girls. Hence the
inventory room should be shifted a PGP hostel so that both girls and boys can enter.
The mess 2 ground is uneven and not maintained. The presence of big stones make
it unsafe to play on and hence need to be removed. More sand can be added to make
it more uniform.
Repainting the tennis court and increasing focus on its maintenance.
The snooker table is in bad condition and needs to be improved.
Regularly replacing the nets in the basketball court as they get worn out.
A check on the volleyball, badminton, table tennis and tennis nets and replacing
them as and when they are damaged or torn.
A table tennis table to be brought in to the Sr-16 common room. Presently the girls
have to visit the sports complex if they want to play, and so this would be a
convenient solution. Carrom and chess boards can also be brought here.
More regular maintenance of the cricket stadium in terms of its grass and other
facilities.
Providing the IPM hostels with chess mats, carrom and foosball facilities.
Improving the condition of the nets in the mess 2 ground as the ball keeps going
out through the nets while playing cricket and football. This causes a lot of delay
during the matches of the cricket and football leagues.
