1- Load estimation

It means identifying approximately the total demand load of the new building at the beginning of the

project, in the pre-design stage.

1.1- Importance of load estimation

It helps customer in

1- Submitting the supply request to the electrical utility.

2- Purchasing electrical power from an electrical Company.

Important in the pre-design stage because it helps to:

1- Calculate the initial budget for the electrical works.

2- Plan the connection to upstream network and MV circuit configurations.

3- Plan the transformers substation and the Big Equipment Rooms.

4- Apply to Power Company for supply (Electricity Distribution Company).

1.2- Important definitions

Some important terms needed to be understood before starting load estimation

- Connected load: It’s the sum of connected loads power.

- Maximum demand: maximum demand occurred during a specific period of time.

- Demand factor: in normal operation the power consumption is less than the connected load
individually (as motors don’t work on its full load). (=max. demand/total connected load)

- Coincidence factor: in practice not all types of load work together, there is some degree of

diversity between them. (=max. demand/sum individual max.

demand). So, it’s applied to each group of loads

- Diversity factor: the reciprocal of Coincidence factor.

1.3- Methods of load estimation

There are 3 methods of it:

1- Space by space method (functional area)

2- Building area method

3- Over all method

1.3.1- Space by space method (functional area)

The building is divided into spaces like offices… etc. each space has load density so, by multiplying

the sum of spaces area to their load density factor we will get the the estimated power required

1.3.2- Load type method

It is used for large buildings so, easier to get load estimation than space by space method as power is
estimated based on the load types of the building (as light, power…etc.). It is calculated by

multiplying the building area with the load density of the load type suitable to its function.
1.3.3- Over all method

Getting the built up area of the building and then multiplying it with suitable over all load density
factor as in the Egyptian code.
