Design of 100KVA transformer

Primary coil design

Step 1: Number of Turns
Voltage, number of turns and rated kVA are interlinked by a formula as
E /T =K √ Q

Where:

 E = Rated voltage per phase

 T = No. of turns per phase
 Q = Rated kVA of the transformer (100 kVA)
 K = A known constant.
Where K is a constant, and is an empirical coefficient based on data taken
from practical designs. The values are

 K = 0.6 to 0.7 for 3-phase core type power transformer

 K = 0.45 for 3-phase core type distribution transformer
 K = 1.3 for 3-phase shell type transformer
 K = 0.75 to 0.85 for 1-phase core type transformer
 K = 1.0 to 1.2 for 1-phase shell type transformer
Therefore, since this 100KVA transformer is a distribution transformer, we
will take K = 0.45.
E v
=K √ Q=0.45∗√ 100=4.5
T turns

No. of secondary turns per phase will be

400
V s ( ph) √ 3
T s= = =51.32 ≅ 52 turns
4.5 4.5

No. of primary turns per phase (at normal tap)

Vp 15000
T p= ×T s = ×52=3377.49 ≅ 3377 turns
Vs 400
√3
Add 5% additional turns for tapping voltage
Total primary turns per phase=T p +5 % × T p =3546 turns

Tap number No. turns in the tap

1 3546
2 3461
3(normal tap) 3377
4 3293
5 3208

Step 2: Cable size for the primary coil

To calculate the cable size first we have to select the current density. This depends upon
cooling method employed

I. Natural Cooling: 1.5 --- 2.3 A/mm2

 AN Air Natural cooling
 ON Oil Natural cooling
 OFN Oil Forced circulated with Natural air cooling
II. Forced Cooling : 2.2 --- 4.0 A/mm2
 AB Air Blast cooling
 OB Oil Blast cooling
 OFB Oil Forced circulated with air Blast cooling
III. Water Cooling: 5.0 --- 6.0 A/mm2
 OW Oil immersed with circulated Water cooling
 OFW Oil Forced with circulated Water cooling

Since this 100KVA transform is used ONFN we will use Cd = 2.3 A/mm2.

Therefore, the cable size will be:

I p ( ph)
Ap=
Cd

The primary phase current is calculated from the KVA rating and KV rating of the
transformer.
KVA 100 KVA
I p= = =2.222 A
3 V p 3 ×15 KV

Therefore the conductor size will be,

I p ( ph) 2.222 A
Ap= = 2
=0.966 mm2=0.97 mm2
Cd 2.3 A/mm
