10.3: Find the time periods of a simple pendulum of 1 metre length, placed on Earth and on moon. The
value of g on the surface of moon is 1/6th of its value on Earth. Where ge is 10 ms–2.

10.6: A wooden bar vibrating into the water surface in a ripple tank has a frequency 12 Hz. The resulting
wave has a wavelength of 3 cm. What is the speed of the wave?
Data:
Frequency = f = 12Hz
Wavelength= λ = 3cm = 3/100 = 0.03 m
Required:
Speed of waves = V =?
Solution:
V=fλ
V = 12 × 0.03
V = 0.36ms–1
10.7: A transverse wave produced on a spring has a frequency of 190 Hz and travels along the length of
the spring of 90 m, in 0.5 s.
a) What is the period of the wave?
b) What is the speed of the wave?
c) What is the wavelength of the wave?
Data:
Frequency = f = 190 Hz
Length = l = 90m
Time taken = t = 0.5 sec
Required:
a) Time period = T=?
b) Speed of wave = v =?
c) Wave length = λ =?
Solution:
a) T=1/f (b) v=l/t (c) v=fλ
T = 1 / 190 v = 90/0.5 λ=v/f
T = 0.005 sec v = 180ms–1 λ = 180 / 190
λ = 0.95m

10.8: Water waves in a shallow dish are 6.0 cm long. At one point, the water moves up a down at a rate of
4.8 oscillations per second.
a) What is the speed of the water waves?
b) What is the period of the water waves?
Data:
Length of wave = λ = 6cm = 6 /100 = 0.06m

Solution:
a) v=fλ b) T=1/f
v = 4.8 × 0.06 T = 1 / 4.8
v = 0.29ms–1 T = 0.21 sec

10.9: At one end of a ripple tank 80 cm across, a 5 Hz vibrator produces waves whose wavelength is 40
mm. Find the time the waves need to cross the tank.
Data:
Length = l = 80cm = 80 /100 = 0.8m
Frequency = f = 5Hz
Wave length = λ = 40mm = 40 / 1000 = 0.04m
Required:
Time = t =?
Solution:
We know that v=fλ Now; 𝒍=vt
v= 5 × 0.04 𝑙
t= 𝑣
v= 0.2ms–1 0.8
t= 0.2
t= 4 sec
10.10: What is the wavelength of the radio waves transmitted by an FM station at 90 MHz. where (1M =
106), and speed of radio wave is 3 x 108 ms–1.
Data:
Frequency = f = 90MHz = 90 × 106Hz
Speed = v = 3 × 108ms–1
Required:
Wave length = λ =?
Solution:
We know that v=f λ
