SYSTEMATICS LABORATORY ACTIVITY 5

SPECIATION
NAME:ASHWIKA SANJAY SEC.: D3
KUSHVAHA
DATE SUBMITTED: 30 NOV 2023 TEACHER: MR.MADEJA CHRISTIAN
DAVE
REMINNDER: ALL ANSWERS MUST BE IN CAPITAL LETTERS.

Purpose: To observe the mechanisms involved in the development of a new

species.
Procedure:
1. Select randomly 3-5 of your friends or classmates to be your group.

List your Members :GRACE PHEBE, HASMITHA, SHIVANI, MAHATHI.

2. Your group will be isolated on an island (lab table) that has a unique
environment. Write out your habitat description. (You know how it feels like in
the lab! 😊 )

Environment Description: A BODY OF LAND SURROUNDED BY WATER THIS

ISlAND ECOSYSTEM EVOLOVED IN LONG ISOLATION FROM NEARBY
LANDMASSES AND CONATIN UNIQUE PLANT AND ANIMAL SPECIES

3. As a group you must select and write down all phenotype characteristics
(your traits) that exist in your group that may improve your group’s survival on
your island. Remember you are limited to phenotypes that are in your
group only!!! Think about your traits that you may have that might help
you survive. Think like Nature would (clothes are not necessary)
Phenotypes that will increase survival: Phenotypes that will increase survival: 1 how to
find or distill fresh water
to swim ,to climb, plant or vegetable identification ,to build a shelter

4. Imagine that your group has been able to reproduce for 500+ generations
(assume no mutations occurred), describe the typical member of your
population. (Create the “perfect person” based on all of your phenotypes listed
in #3!) Only use those traits that you and your group have to create the perfect
person!!
Physical Description: THE PERSON WE CREAT BECOMES CLEARLY FITTED AND
EASILY GETS ADAPTED TO THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT KNOWS HOW
TO SWIM CLIMB AND GETS ADAPTED EASILY

5.Now assume that many small mutations occurred over the next 500+
generations. If a mutation improves survival in your environment it will be
passed through future generations. Use your imagination... anything that nature
could potentially create using DNA (no moving parts, like gun-hands!!) List 6 -
10 visible mutations that would improve survival for your species: THE CHANGE IN
STRUCTURE OF GENE ,CAUSE ALTERNATION OF SINGLE BASE UNIT IN DNA
,INCREASED THE LIKELIHOOD OF AN ORGANISM SURVING AND BEING
NATURALLY CHOSEN ,BROADENS POPULATION DIVERSITY,BRING ABOUT
EVOLUTIONARY CHANGES ,IMPROVES FITNESS

6. Now draw a picture of a typical member of your population following the

1000+ generations of mutations and natural selection that have occurred in
this exercise. Use the info from number 4 and 5 to make the most FIT
individual.

Picture after 1000+ generations:

You can draw it on any materials available at your end. Capture and paste it on the space
provided below.
7. Do you think that your new population is genetically different from any of the
other populations in other group? Explain.
. SINCE NEW POPULATION HAS BETTER ADOPTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND
THE INCREASED IN THE DIVERSITY EVOLUTION OF NEW MATERIAL THE NEW
POPULATION ARE TRULY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER POPULATION IN THE GROUP

8. Do you think your populations could represent a new species? Explain.

YES OUR POPULATION COULD REPRESENT A NEW SPECIES DUE TO
SUDDEN HERITABLE CHANGES GETS ACCUMULATED OVER THE YEARS AND
EVETUALLY RESULTS IN NEW PHENOTYPES LEADING TO FORMATION OF
NEW SPECIES .
