Introduction
• IQ stands for intelligence quotient.
• William Stern introduced the idea of IQ
• IQ tests are tools to measure intellectual abilities and potential.
• It is a test of intelligence
• IQ refers to mental age (MA) expressed as a ratio of chronological age(CA)
multiplied by 100
• IQ remains stable
• Intelligence goes on growing up to the age of 16 to 20 years.
• IQ provides a ratio for determining how bright an individual as compared
to others of his age.

• MA= Mental age – refers to mental maturity of a
person
• CA = Chronological age – refers to actual age
• If he/she can successfully perform the test items
allotted to 6 year age level, then the mental age 6
• (e.g) Mental age =6/5
• IQ = 120
• Superior
IQ and its Classification
➢ 140 and above Genius
➢ 120 to 140 Very Superior
➢ 110 to 120 Superior
➢ 90 to 110 Average
➢ 80 to 90 Border line
➢ 70 to 80 Dull
➢ 50 to 70 Morens ( stupid)
➢ 20 to 50 Idiots

Individual Test of Intelligence

When a single person is tested by a single


examiner it is called individual test of
intelligence.
(e.g) Alfred Binet’s intelligence test (sentence
completion test)
Group Test of Intelligence

When a single examiner is given to test a


number of persons at a time is called group
test.
(e.g) Army alpha(for literates)
Army beta (for illiterates)
Performance Test of Intelligence

In this test individual has to do


certain operations but he need not
have knowledge of reading and
writing.
(e.g) Alexander’s pass along test.

Proper classification of pupils

Pupils can be classified into various


categories on the basis of intelligence test
i.e. genius, very superior, superior,
average, below average, dull etc.
Classification of Pupils into homogenous
group
On the basis of intelligence test pupils
approximately of the same mental age can
be placed in one group. It will ensure
uniform progress and avoid educational
waste.
Awards of scholarships

On the basis of intelligence test


scholarships can be awarded to
pupils.
Educational guidance

•Intelligence test measure the inborn


mental ability of the pupils.
Educational guidance can be given
on the basis of these tests.
Vocational Guidance

Pupils who have higher IQ may be advised


to take higher professions in life.
Assessment of teachers work

If the result is poor in a particular subject,


it means the subject has not been taught
properly.
Guidance for selection of jobs

Intelligent test can be used for making


selection of person for various types of
jobs.
