NOTE: As per EASA IR 21, a minor change is one that has no appreciable effect on the
mass, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics affecting the
airworthiness of the product. All other changes are major changes.
REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES
Corrosion has been discovered on the lower drag stay arm when rust traces were noticed in the vicinity
of both ends of the lower arm lug bores. The discovery of one case prompted visual inspection of all
the other aircraft owned by the operator concerned.
Post drag stay removal, sealant has been reported damaged between the lug bore and the bearing
race, on disassembly pitting corrosion and rust traces have been reported on the internal surface of the
lug bore. To date eleven lower drag stay arms on A340-500/-600 aircraft have exhibited corrosion in the
upper and/or lower bores.
This Service Bulletin is published to advise all operators of A340-500/-600 aircraft of the issue of
Messier-Dowty Service Bulletin No. A34/56N-32-113.
Due to the nature of the failure of the A340-500/-600 lower drag stay arm and the relatively widespread
occurrence of the corrosion throughout the A340-500/-600 fleet, a modification is required to eliminate
the root cause of the corrosion on Weight Variant (WV) 001, 002, 003 and 004 aircraft.
This Service Bulletin introduces a modification to the lower drag stay arm in order to prevent corrosion.
The 300M steel lower drag stay arm interface with the 17-4PH steel bearing race is modified in order to
prevent corrosion from developing at this joint. Four key aspects to the modification exist:
- The thickness of the sealant bead applied externally is specified and increased in order to prevent
the ingress of contaminants
- The sealant applied between the lug and the race is changed from a fully polymerizing Nickel
containing compound to Molykote DX with Zinc (a part curing compound), this reduces the friction
in the joint helping to prevent cadmium damage caused by micro-displacements and removes the
Nickel present that can react with and deplete Cadmium leading to damage.
- The thickness of the Cadmium in the bore is modified in order to ensure that the sacrificial
protection provided by the Cadmium is maximized.
Accomplishment of this Service Bulletin cancels the inspection requirements of Service Bulletin
A340-32-5099.

D. DESCRIPTION
E. COMPLIANCE
(1) Classification
Accomplishment of this Service Bulletin has been rendered mandatory by the issue of an
Airworthiness Directive (AD) published by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The AD must be used as the reference document for the mandatory accomplishment
timescale.
F. APPROVAL
If an aircraft listed in the effectivity has a modification or repair embodied that is not of
AIRBUS origin, and which affects the content of this Service Bulletin, the operator is
responsible for obtaining approval by its airworthiness authority for any adaptation necessary
before incorporation of the Service Bulletin.
G. MANPOWER
The manpower estimates given in this Service Bulletin are based on the direct labor cost to
do the work. These estimates assume that the work will be done by experienced personnel,
and may need to be revised upwards to suit operator’s circumstances. The estimates do not
include the time to prepare, plan or inspect the work. Manufacture and procurement of parts
and tools, drying times for paints, sealants, etc., and general administration work are also not
included.
