REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES
Inspection of an A330 aircraft fitted with Basic Main Landing Gear (MLG) has shown that the MLG Side
Stay Upper Cardan Pin (UCP) can migrate from its original position and that the UCP nut and retainer
can become detached. The reported MLG sidestay UCP migration event had been caused by corrosion,
due to lack of jointing compound and inadequate sealant application during MLG installation. Therefore,
this issue affects any MLG that has had a UCP replacement or re-installation, since Entry Into Service
(EIS), irrespective of MLG overhaul.
The loss of the side stay UCP locking function can lead to a complete migration of the UCP and
disconnection of the MLG side stay upper arm from the aircraft structure.
An inspection is considered necessary to capture any corrosion that may be present on the UCP and
associated nut threads. Corrosion may contribute to migration of the UCP. The aim of this inspection
Service Bulletin is to request operators to:
- do a Detailed Inspection (DET) of the Side Stay Upper Cardan Pin Locking Assembly
- check for corrosion, pitting and/or damage to the threads on the UCP and UCP Nut
- if corrosion, pitting and/or damage is found on the UCP or UCP Nut, the damaged parts are to be
replaced before further flight.
Accomplishment of this Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) will help in the early detection of corrosion
and/or damage to the UCP and nut retainer assembly. This minimizes the possibility of a potential
unsafe condition arising from the disconnection of the upper side stay arm from the aircraft structure.
In addition, to prevent any improper re-installation of an Upper Cardan Pin on a MLG, Airbus amended
the applicable Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) on OCT 01/14.

C. REASON
(1) History
Inspection of an A330 aircraft fitted with Basic Main Landing Gear (MLG) has shown that
the MLG Side Stay Upper Cardan Pin (UCP) can migrate from its original position and
that the UCP nut and retainer can become detached. The reported MLG sidestay UCP
migration event had been caused by corrosion, due to lack of jointing compound and
inadequate sealant application during MLG installation. Therefore, this issue affects any
MLG that has had a UCP replacement or re-installation, since Entry Into Service (EIS),
irrespective of MLG overhaul.
The loss of the side stay UCP locking function can lead to a complete migration of the
UCP and disconnection of the MLG side stay upper arm from the aircraft structure.
(2) Objective/Action
- do a Detailed Inspection (DET) of the Side Stay Upper Cardan Pin Locking
Assembly
- check for corrosion, pitting and/or damage to the threads on the UCP and UCP Nut
- if corrosion, pitting and/or damage is found on the UCP or UCP Nut, the damaged
parts are to be replaced before further flight.
(3) Advantages
Accomplishment of this Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) will help in the early detection
of corrosion and/or damage to the UCP and nut retainer assembly. This minimizes the
possibility of a potential unsafe condition arising from the disconnection of the upper side
stay arm from the aircraft structure.

F. APPROVAL
The technical content of this document is approved under the authority of Design
Organisation Approval No. EASA.21J.031.
If an aircraft listed in the effectivity has a modification or repair embodied that is not of
AIRBUS origin, and which affects the content of this Service Bulletin, the operator is
responsible for obtaining approval by its airworthiness authority for any adaptation necessary
before incorporation of the Service Bulletin.
G. MANPOWER
The manpower estimates given in this Service Bulletin are based on the direct labor cost to
do the work. These estimates assume that the work will be done by experienced personnel,
and may need to be revised upwards to suit operator’s circumstances. The estimates do not
include the time to prepare, plan or inspect the work. Manufacture and procurement of parts
and tools, drying times for paints, sealants, etc., and general administration work are also not
included.
