MOTHERBOARD

alternativelyknown as the
mainboard, system board or
mobo
is the main printed circuit board
(PCB) found in computers and
other expandable systems.
MOTHERBOARD

Itholds many of the crucial

electronic components of the
system, such as the central
processing unit (CPU) and
memory, and provides
connectors for other peripherals.
COMPONENTS
OF A
MOTHERBOARD
CPU SOCKET
 a component that
provides mechanical
and electrical
connections
between a
microprocessor and a
printed circuit board
CPU SOCKET
Complimentary Metal
Oxide Semiconductor
(CMOS) BATTERY

 refersto a small
memory on PC
motherboards
that is used to
store BIOS
settings.
CMOS BATTERY
 used to store basic Information about the PC’s configuration
for instance:
 Floppy disk and hard disk drive types
 Information about CPU
 RAM size
 Date and time
 Serial and parallel port information
 Plug and Play information
 Power Saving settings
MEMORY SLOTS
 allowscomputer
memory (RAM) to
be inserted into
the computer.
 There will usually
be 2 to 4 memory
slots depending
on the
motherboard,
EXPANSION BUS
 isan input/output
pathway from the
CPU to peripheral
devices and it is
typically made up
of a series of slots
on the
motherboard.
ISA, PCI & AGP SLOTS

 Industry Standard Architecture - an 8bit or 16bit parallel bus

system that allowed up to 6 devices to be connected to a PC
 Peripheral Component Interconnect - the most common
expansion bus in a PC and other hardware platforms.
 Accelerates Graphics Port is a high-speed point-to-point
channel for attaching a video card to a computer's
motherboard.
 carry signals such as data, memory addresses, power, and
control signals from component to component.
ISA slot

PCI slot
CHIPSETS
 is a set of
electronic
components in an
integrated circuit
that manages the
data flow between
the processor,
memory and
peripherals.
CHIPSETS

 controls
communications
between the
processor and
external devices,
the chipset plays a
crucial role in
determining system
performance.
NORTHBRIDGE
is in charge of controlling transfers
between the processor and the RAM,
which is why it is located physically near
the processor.
It is sometimes called the GMCH, for
Graphic and Memory Controller Hub.
SOUTHBRIDGE

handles communications between

slower peripheral devices.
It is also called the ICH (I/O Controller
Hub).
