Guilford’s Structure of Intellect

Introduction
• Joy Paul Guilford suggests structure of intellect.
• He was a Psychologist and Psychometrist
• Structure of Intellect is the result of factor analysis
• Factor Analysis is a technique that is used to reduce large number
of variables into fewer number of factors.
• Factor Analysis is conducted by Guilford and his associates in the
psychology laboratory at the university of South California in
1966.
Guilford suggests that mind is composed of
3 major dimensions.

What is Process?
A series of action that you do for a particular
purpose.
Process -- 5

• Cognition
• Memory
• Convergent Thinking
• Divergent Thinking
• Evaluation
Cognition

This involves immediate knowledge and


understanding of particular material.
Memory

It refers to the retention of what is


recognized for a long period of time.
Convergent Thinking
General information from the given data where
the emphasis is on conventionally accepted best
outcomes.
Divergent Thinking

Thinking in different directions. Searching and


seeking some variety and novelty.
Evaluation

We reach conclusion and decisions as the


goodness, correctness, adequacy of
information.

Visual

It is a concrete material which has been


perceived through ideas.

Visual information is observed by our sense of
sight.
(e.g) Chart, model etc
Symbolic

It is composed of letters, digits or other


conventional signs usually organized in general
patterns.

Information appears in the form of signs or
images.
Semantic

It is in the form of meanings or ideas for which


no examples are necessary.
Behavioural Content

Social intelligence which enables one to


understand human communications.

psychology.

based on variables. Relational connections are
more meaningful and definable.
Systems

This is an aggregate of items of information


with a structure.
Transformation

Changes like redefinition, modification in existing


information or its function.
Implication

This is concerned with the exploration of


informations in the form of expectancies,
predictions and consequences.
Educational Implications

• It helps for better analysis of students intelligence.


• It helps in problem solving skills which can be
beneficial for the learners as well as their teachers.
• It helps in making an individual creative, practical,
analytical and logical.
• Better understanding of individual differences.
• Discover the mental and cognitive capabilities of
students.
