2. GENERAL INFORMATION

The units described in this manual are ultra violet light sterilizers (UV -C).
Experiments made it possible to observe that the emission spectrum of low-pressure mercury vapour lamps, corresponding to 254nm, determines the
maximum inactivation of most bacteria; this led to the realization of special systems capable of exploiting this phenomenon.

3
In the UVSTAR unit, radiation is produced by special low-pressure mercury vapour lamps installed in a quartz tube, which is inserted at the middle of a
stainless steel chamber through which the water flows and is sterilized.
When ultraviolet germicidal energy comes in contact with bacteria, viruses, lactic acid bacteria, algae, protozoa, etc. which are generally found in water, it penetrates
the outer cell membrane and destroys the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which is the basic nucleus for the construction of all living beings.
If the UV radiation dosage parameters and the energy-absorption coefficient of water are fulfilled, the UV sterilizer allows almost total elimination (over 99%) of
2
microorganisms passing through it provided that the UV dosage (µWs/cm ) and transmittance (UVT%) are in accordance with the following data:
The UV dose required for the destruction of most bacteria is an intensity of 13.000 UV energy per unit at a wavelength of 254 nm.
2
The energy unit (or dosage) is expressed in Micro W att x second/cm .
2
UV STAR systems have a dosage capacity of over 40.000 µWs/cm at the project flow rate.
The UVR sterilizer flow rate varies depending on the transparency of the water to be treated (see TRASMITTANCE) and on the UV C radiation dose. Obviously,
the more the water is clear and transparent, the lower is the employed UV dose, and the higher will be the flow rate.
2
UV STAR suggests dimensioning your systems for flow rates related to an dosage of 40.000 µWs/cm and 95% UV transmittance, or particularly clear waters
(i.e. with 99% transmittance, demineralized waters).

3. WATER PHYSIC AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS

7. INSTALLATION

7.1 HYDRAULIC INSTALLATION

We suggest the installation of a by-pass for the equipment disconnection.
UV sterilizers should be installed vertically with water inlet from the bottom up in order to vent all the air from the system. The vertical installation allow also a
better thermal exchange.
Only ECO MINISTAR, ECO MIDISTAR, ECO1STAR and UV MIDISTAR LCD, UV1STAR LCD models may be installed horizontally with water in let to either the
right or left but with the connections looking upward in order to vent all the air from the system.
The installation of the UV equipment has to be operated in order to keep the vessel full of water.
Make sure that there is space enough on the lamp removal side (at least 1,5 m) as to allow easy lamp change or insertion of the quartz sleeve.
Hydraulic installation and connection must be performed before inserting quartz sleeves and lamps.
The installation must be carefully carried out avoiding water hammer effect that could break the quartz sleeves.

6
7.2 Alarm solenoid valve and drain solenoid valve installation

This option is available only for systems with LCD electronic panel.

Install the solenoid valves as detailed in the circuit diagram (see

appendix IV).
1
If the alarm solenoid valve is installed set the LCD panel on mode 2
(see appendix II b). This way in case of alarm the solenoid valve stop the
water supply and the electronic panel switches off the UV lamps.

Regarding the operating logic of the drain solenoid valve see appendix
II I.2.

7. After the vessel pressurization check the hydraulic condition and the absence
of water leakage. In particular check with a paper towel if the are leakage in the
quartz sleeve.

In case of leakage, empty the vessel and check the condition and position of the
o-rings and try again.
ATTENTION!
Wait until the water reaches a temperature of 45 °C
minimum and repeat the o-rings check. In case of
water leakage screw the black plastic plug another
half round.

7
ATTENTION!
The quartz must reach the spring on the other end of the vessel and stop.

Be very careful when inserting the quartz sleeve: it must be perfectly

aligned with the head flange and must not protrude more that 5-8 mm. The
risk would be breaking the quartz sleeve or cause water leakage because of
improper sealing effect of the o -ring.
Do not force the springs on the other end of the vessel, they could blend
and break (see picture).

7.4 Electrical connections

ATTENTION!
The equipment needs a differential electric supply not higher then 30 mA.
The equipment has to be grounded. The sterilization vessel has a suitable device for the ground connection. The grounding has to be operated in
accordance to law. An not correct grounding can cause an electric shock.

The equipment and especially the electrical panel has to be installed in a clean fresh and dry place, far from heat, humidity and vibration sources.
Check that the system is suitable for the maximum power absorbed by the unit (please refer to plate data) and that the cross -section of the electrical connection
wires is suitable and complies with current laws.
To disconnect the unit from the mains use a bipolar switch conforming to CEI -EN standards (contact opening at least 3 mm, preferably with fuses).
Bind the electrical panel to a wall above the vessel or in any case in a position in such a way that the water can not be in contact with the panel also i n case of
leakage.
Grounding of the unit is mandatory and the ground cable (which must be yellow-green and longer than phase cables) shall be fixed to the appropriate
terminal.

GROUNDING ECO SERIES GROUNDING LCD SERIES

7.5 LAMPS CONNECTIONS

DANGER!
Do not use the UV-C emitter out from the vessel (Severe eyes damage danger).
ATTENTION!
Do not use UV-C emitter if the vessel is not full of water (Ballast damage danger).

Once you are sure that the equipment is hydraulically tested, you can move on to the next step, installing the lamps and starting up the unit. Make sure the unit
is disconnected from power source before carrying out the following operations. Insert lamps in the quartz sleeves leaving their ends out for wire connection.

8
Connect to each lamp the wire corresponding to the num ber printed on the plastic casing.

Do not touch the lamps with bare hands in order to prevent a reduction of the life time.

Carefully insert lamp in the quartz sleeve and cover carefully the black plastic plug with the rubber circuit
cover. The unit is now ready.

Connect unit to power supply. Turn electrical panel on.

Keep the equipment in pressure (close the exit valve) and wait 1 or 2 hours to rise temperature (50 ± 60 °C).
Check for leakages in the quartz sleeves and if necessary screw agai n the black plastic plug.

7.6 EQUIPMENT START UP AND IRRADIATION PROBE CALIBRATION (OPTIONAL)

After sterilization (see chapter 8) it is possible to start up the equipment and to calibrate the irradiation probe (optional ) (see also appendix III a/b).
It is highly recommended to set the maintenance telephonic number in case of support needs (see appendix II h.3)
N.B. At first start up the probe calibration is automatic but every time the lamps are replaced is necessary a manual calibra tion.

8. PIPING STERILIZAT ION

Before operating the unit, the hydraulic circuit needs to be sterilized in order to remove contaminants. Introduce 30 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution (approx.
250 g of commercial product 12% in 1000 litres water) at the start of the hyd raulic circuit. Open all downstream valves until you smell chlorine odour in the
flowing water. Close all the valves Let the sodium hypochlorite sterilizing solution stand in the duct for at least 4 ± 6 hours.
Turn the UV sterilizer, wait 5 minutes (for lamp warm up). Open all utilities until the chlorine odour of the water disappears.

N.B. If water looks red or cloudy during this operation, inspect the quartz sleeves: they might be covered by a light iron coating or other precipitates,
which reduce the sterilizing power of UV lamps. In this case, clean the sleeves and make sure the water quality conforms to the specifications.

9. MAINTENANCE

ATTENTION!
Before carrying out the following operations, make sure the unit is disconnected from its power sou rce. All the operations have to be carried out by
trained staff Prima di effettuare qualsiasi operazione di manutenzione accertarsi della completa disconnessione elettrica ed idraulica dell ¶DSSDUHFFKLR

9.1 QUARTZ SLEEVES CLEANING OPERATION

Check the o-ring once a mouth, it can be damaged by UV-C and temperature.
We recommend to perform a quartz sleeve check 90 days after start-up. This will help determining the frequency of subsequent cleaning operations.
Wear rubber gloves when cleaning to avoid leaving fingerprints. Close water inlet and outlet valves and open the bypass valve. Unplug the lamps and remove
from quartz sleeve. Delicately remove the quartz sleeves. Clean the quartz sleeve with paper moistened with warm water and so ap and, if necessary, very
carefully with hydrochloric acid in order to remove iron and limescale deposits. Dry with a paper towel.
WARNING: do not wet the inside of the quartz sleeve.

See quartz sleeve installation at chapter 7.3

9
9.2 PERIODIC REPLACEMENT OF LAMPS AND O-RINGS

The lamps (UV-C emitter) has a life time of about 13000 hours, approximately 18 months of continue service. If the lamp is used sporadicall y it has to be
replaced anyway within 24 months, after this period of time the UV -C lamp does not produce eno ugh UV dosage to sterilize, also if it radiates light.
Frequent stop and start of the lamps reduce the life time, in this cases improve the number of maintenance checks. During the lamp replacement it is suggested
also the o-ring replacement.
Do not touch the lamps with bare hands in order to prevent life time reduction.
For lamp installation procedures see chapter 7.5

9.3 ELECTRIC CIRCUIT AND FUSE CHECK

Verify the cables condition.

Verify if there are signs of use on the quadripin socket due to temperature and UV-C.

Replace, if necessary, fuses (4x20) in the Electrical

panel and in the LCD electrical board.

10. TROUBLESHOOTING

ATTENTION!
Every operation on the hardware has to be carried out after disconnection from power supply.

APPENDIX I
NOTES ON THE INSTALLATION OF ECO-STAR SERIES BALLAST

ECO-STAR single lamp systems are characterized by extreme simplicity of use and high quality, perfectly suitable for
sterilization. They are certified for use with drinking water.
During the installation it is necessary:
 Ground the sterilizatio n chamber with appropriate connection;
 The power supply plug has to be connected to a circuit with differential magneto thermal switch;
The position of the ballast has to be chosen in order to avoid any contact with water leaks.

Neglect this rules can cause electrocution risk for the user.

ECO-STAR single lamp systems include ballast with two -color LED: lamp on (green LED), burned out lamp (red LED).
In case of burned out lamp the ballast activates an acoustic signal (beep).

We suggest to install the plug/ballast in an easily accessible place in order to easily check the lamp status.

Lamps shall be changed after 18 month operation, regardless of whether they are burned out or not; we suggest to
record the date of start-up of the sterilizer with new lamps.

of the lamps (you have not replace the entire set) the reset of the partial partial hours counter is not suggested .

II e. LOW IRRADIATION VALUE ALARM:

This alarm triggers when the irradiation probe reads a value lower then the set point for 3 consecutive minutes.
The system disables the alarm automatically (if in mode 1) after reading a irradiation value higher then the set point + hysteresis (5%). For example: if the set point
is 75% the alarm will be disable at 80%.

desired value (75% default) using the arrows and confirm with the OK button. The write EXECUTED! confirms the righ t execution of the operation.

II f. HIGH TEMPERATURE ALARM

This alarm triggers when the temperature probe reads a value higher then the set point. The system disables the alarm automatically (the lamps will be switched on
and the alarms disabled) after reading a water temperature lower then the set point + hysteresis (5°C). For example: if the set point is 40°C the alarm will be
disable only at 35°C. For more information see paragraph II I.2.
To modify the set point enter in the Menu. Press button OK WRHQWHULQWKH0HQXDQGPRYHZLWKWKHDUURZŹXQWLO7(03(5$785(6(1625SUHVV2.
and select CHANGE VALUE HIGH TEMPERATURE using OK again, select the desired value (40°C default) using the arrows and confirm with the OK
button. The write EXECUTED! confirms the right execution of the operation.

II g. CLEANING CYCLE ALARM**

This alarm triggers if the cleaning cycle system needs too much time. This means that a mechanical problem occurs. In this case restore the mechanical functions
of the device before restarting the system. For more information see paragraph II h.4.
To able/disable the automatic cleaning system of the quartz sleeves enter in the Menu. Press button OK to enter in the Menu a QGPRYHZLWKWKHDUURZŹ
until LAMPS CLEANING CYCLE, press OK and select ABLE/DISABLE. The write EXECUTED! confirms the right execution of the operation.

II h.2 MODIFY THE STAND BY DELAY

This setting permits to decide the stand by delay time after the last supply contact (default value 00 minutes). This setting is useful to avoid frequent on/off events
for example when the stand by contact is linked to a flow switch. If the stand by delay value is 60 seconds it is necessary 6 0 consecutive seconds of NC stand by
contact on the LCD controller to switch the device in stand by mode. However the device exit from the stand by mode immediately after the contact opening.

right execution of the operation.

II h.4 QUARTZ CLEANING CYCLE

This setting is only for the device equipped with the automatic cleaning system (optional).
Every cycle includes two passages of the cleaning plate and finish in the middle of the sterilization chamber (starting position).
In the Menu you can able the cleaning system and choice the AUTOMATIC mode or the MANUAL mode.

The cleaning system in automatic mode can trigger in case of:

 Irradiation value lower then the set point (LOW UV);
 Lapse of time (TIMER);
During the cleaning cycle the panel displays the message:
ATTENTION! CYCLE
CLEANING LAMPS

SOME NOTES ABOUT THE SYSTEM'S LOGIC

II i.1 TOTAL HOURS COUNTER (INCREASING)
The total hours counter starts automatically at first start of the device and it can not be reset.
During the normal operating mode the panel displays alternatively the message:

COUNTER TOTAL!
xxxxxx HOURS

II i.2 VESSEL COOLING SYSTEM

During a long interruption of water supply (for example during the night) the temperature could cause scale problems, in orde r to solve this issues it is possible to
install a solenoid valve to discharge the hot water and load new fresh water.
If the temperature probe (optional) is installed the hot water discharge solenoid valve opens automatically 3°C before high temperature set point and the panel
displays the following message:
ATTENTION!
PREALARM TEMP.

The hot water solenoid valve closes automatically 5°C below the high temperature set point. For example if the high temperature set point is 50°C, the soleno id
valve opens at 47°C and it continue to be opened until the temperature reaches a value lower then 45°C.
If the temperature probe is not installed the hot water solenoid valve opens automatically every 3 hours for 60 seconds independently of the water's temperature. To
install see the circuit diagram.
When the discharge of the water is running the panel displays the following message:

ATTENTION! COOLING
LAMP CYCLE

II i.3 REMOTE ALARM

In case of alarm event the panel actives an output useful to remote the alarm or link it to a telephone dialler. To install s ee the circuit diagram.
