ATS NC I TRAINING SESSION Batch 2024 OPENING PRAYER
Lord, help us in our studies today. Give us
concentration so that may we listen, understand, learn and have peaceful mind and may we always remember that god is always with us Good Morning! TTSFI ATS NC I Trainees LESSON: Introduction to Manual Transmission ATS NC I Training Session Objectives: ▪ Discuss the function of transmission ▪ Distinguish the difference between manual and automatic transmission ▪ Identify the types of gear set LESSON: Introduction to Manual Transmission INTRODUCTION
The word “Transmission” means the
whole of the mechanism that transmits the power from the engine crankshaft to the rear wheels, providing the suitable variations of the engine torque at the road wheels, whenever required. What is transmission system? What is transmission system?
It is a system that transmit the engine
torque power to the driving wheels to drive the vehicle on the road. What is transmission system? Depending on the size of the vehicles, the size of the gears also varies. There are low gears covering a shorter distance and are useful when speed is low. There are high gears also with larger number of teeth. What is transaxle? What is transaxle? It is a combination of transmission and differential (drive axle) system. And also it is a front drive wheel. Requirements of the Transmission System Requirements of the Transmission System ✓ Provide the torque needed to move the vehicle under a variety of road and load conditions. It does this by SHIFTING the gear ratio between the engine crankshaft and vehicle drive wheels. Requirements of the Transmission System ✓ Be shifted into REVERSE so the vehicle can move backward. ✓ Be shifted into NEUTRAL for starting the engine and running it without turning the drive wheels. Basic Types of Transmission Basic Types of Transmission 1. Manual Transmission The manual transmission, which is also known as a “standard transmission” or a “stick shift”, is a type of transmission that utilizes a driver-operated clutch to regulate torque transfer from the engine to the transmission. The clutch is typically engaged or disengaged by a foot pedal or hand lever. 1. Manual Transmission Because they are the simplest, mechanically speaking, of the three types of transmissions, they also often have the longest lives, because there is less to go wrong. 2. Automatic Transmission An automatic transmission (sometimes abbreviated to auto or AT) is a multi-speed transmission used in motor vehicles that does not require any driver input to change gears under normal driving conditions. It uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF) as it lubricant. What is Gear Set? Gear Set It is a set of driver and driven gear meshed. Gear ratio is the ratio of the number of teeth on the driven wheel to number of teeth on the driver wheel or the speed of rotation of the driver to the driven. Example:
Gear Set – is a set of driver and driven gear
meshed. Gear Ratio - is the ratio between the rotational speeds of two meshing gears. Since each gear has a different diameter and number of gear teeth, each of the axes rotates at a different speed when they are both engaged. Explanation:
If the manual transmission is shifted in 1st
gear, so the one (1) turn of input shaft is equivalent in 3.9 or 4.0 turn of output shaft. Which result of having high torque power but less torque speed. Types of Gear Set Types of Gear Set
1. Gear Reduction 2. Direct Drive 3. Overdrive A. Gear Reduction
It is a gear set which the driver gear is
smaller than the driven gear. And it means that this gear set will result of producing high torque power but less torque speed. (LOW GEAR) A. Gear Reduction
It is a gear set which the driver gear is
smaller than the driven gear. And it means that this gear set will result of producing high torque power but less torque speed. (LOW GEAR) A. Gear Reduction
driven gear has the same size of gear. And it means that this gear set will result of producing same torque power and speed. B. Direct Drive
4th gear – 1:1
4th Gear C. Overdrive
It is a gear set which the driver gear is
greater than the driven gear. And it means that this gear set will result of producing low torque power but high torque speed. (HIGH GEAR) C. Overdrive
5th gear – 0.8:1
C. Overdrive
5th gear – 0.8:1
5th Gear Done…… THANK YOU!!! Let’s Have a QUIZ 1. What is transmission? 2. What is transaxle? 3. What are the three requirements for transmission? 4. What are the two basic types of transmission? Number 5-6. A. Gear Set B. Gear Ratio 5. It is a set of driver and driven gear meshed. 6. the number of teeth on the driven wheel to number of teeth on the driver wheel or the speed of rotation of the driver to the driven. A. Gear Reduction B. Direct Drive C. Overdrive 7. 1st Gear 12. 4th Gear 8. 5 Gear th
