Lines and Angles - 02

Alternate Angle
If a straight line intersects two or more parallel lines, then it is called a transversal line. When the coplanar
lines are cut by a transversal, some angles are formed. Those angles are known as interior or exterior angles.
Alternate angles are shaped by the two parallel lines crossed by a transversal.

Consider the given figure,

1)EF and GH are the two parallel lines.

2)RS is the transversal line that cuts EF at L and GH at M

3)If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the alternate angles are equal.

Therefore, ∠3 = ∠ 5 and ∠4 = ∠6

∠2 = ∠8 and ∠1 = ∠7

Interior Angles
The angles that lie inside a shape, are said to be interior angles, or the angles that lie in the area bounded
between two parallel lines that are intersected by a transversal are also called interior angles.

In the above figure (a), the angles ∠a, ∠b, and ∠c are interior angles.

In the above figure (b), L1 and L2 are parallel, and L is the transversal. The angles ∠1, ∠2, ∠3, and ∠4 are
interior angles.

Opposite Angles
When any two straight lines intersect each other, there are different pairs of angles that are formed. The
angles that are directly opposite to each other are known as opposite angles. They are also termed as vertical
angles or vertically opposite angles and are equal to each other.

In the above figure ∠1 = ∠3 and ∠2 = ∠4 are opposite angles.

Consecutive Interior Angles

When two lines are cut by a transversal, the pair of angles on one side of the transversal and inside the two
lines are called the consecutive interior angles.

In the figure, ∠4 and ∠5 are consecutive interior angles.

Also ∠2 and ∠6 are consecutive interior angles.

Corresponding Angle
When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal then the pair of angles which occupy the same
position at the intersection.

∠1 = ∠5, ∠3 = ∠6, ∠4 = ∠7, ∠2 = ∠8

Vertically opposite angle

When two lines intersect each other, then the opposite angles formed due to intersection are called vertical angles or vertically
opposite angles.

A pair of vertically opposite angles are always equal to each other

∠POR = ∠SOQ and ∠POS = ∠ROQ

Here, (∠AOC, ∠BOD) and (∠AOD, ∠BOC) are the pairs of vertically
opposite angles.
