Teaching Time 10:20 – 11:00 am No. of Days 3

Mon Tuesday Wed Thurs Fri

I. OBJECTIVES In this lesson the student will be able to answer the following question :
1. What is oxygen?
2. Why do we breathe?
3. What causes human to gasp for air?
4. What is the key parts of the breathing system?

A. Content The learners demonstrate understanding of…

Standards 1.. how the different structures of the circulatory and respiratory systems
work together to transport oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the
different parts of the body
2. the prevention, detection, and treatment of diseases affecting the
circulatory and respiratory systems conduct an information dissemination
activity on effective ways of taking care of the respiratory and circulatory
systems based on data gathered from the school or local health workers
Explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to
transport nutrients, gases, and other molecules to and from the different
parts of the body Infer how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of
respiratory and circulatory systems
3. how genetic information is organized in genes on chromosomes
4. the different patterns of inheritance
B. Performance The learners should be able to conduct an information dissemination
Standards activity on effective ways of taking care of the respiratory and circulatory
systems based on data gathered from the school or local health workers.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction The teacher will play a video that showing the importance of oxygen in the
humans life.
B. Development Phase 1: Oxygen and the Human Breathing System
Oxygen given the chemical symbol O, is an element that represent atomic
number 8. Atmospheric oxygen exists as O 2. Oxygen serves as essential
element in supporting life and as an integral part of the atmosphere.
Oxygen plays a vital role in carrying out metabolic function of cell; and
because of this, its presence enables us to live. It facilitates the breakdown
of nutrients for supporting growth and development, and life overall.
Without metabolism, our body will deteriorate. This will eventually result
to death because our body cannot process the nutrients needed for
maintaining life. in the absence of oxygen, mortality becomes apparent as
other physiological processes in the body become jeopardized. The
impaired metabolic function due to lack of oxygen in the body will result in
susceptibility to infection as the breakdown of specific nutrients for the
immune system becomes impaired. We may also feel weakness due to the
body’s inability to break down glucose for energy, which will ultimately
make the other organs incapacitated, thus leading to death once all supply
of oxygen becomes depleted.

You may get sensation when you feel as if your lungs would burst out of
your chest just to supply your body with enough air, when your body
engage in a rigorous activity or any situation that uses up the body’s
energy. Breathing is defined as the act of pulling air into the lungs
( inhalation ) and eliminating air out of the lungs (exhalation).

The Human Breathing System

Breathe in and breathe out. Notice your chest and belly moving and feel
the soft air passing from the nose. Listen to the quiet sounds of breathing
in and out. Imagine the air moving from the nose into the throat, through
the air tubes, and into the air sacs. The parts of the respiratory system that
are in charge of supplying oxygen are the nose, nasal passageways,
windpipe, lungs, and diaphragm. In the nose and nasal passages, the
entering air is made warm, damp, and clean of unknown particles. Next,
the air moves down through the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli.
Trachea is the empty tube that serves as passageway of air into the lungs.
Bronchi are the two branching tubes that connect to the alveoli. Alveoli
are the air sacs that allow gas exchange in the lungs.

Phase 2:
Compare!
Examine the picture between the two activities, which one consumes
more oxygen.

Playing Basketball Sleeping

Comparing the structure

Look closely at the bunch of grapes which represents the human breathing
system.

GuideQuestions:
1. What does each part of the bunch of grapes represent in relation to the
human breathing system?
2. What are the key parts of the breathing system?

C. Engagement Phase 3: Check your Understanding

Direction: Rank the following activities according to the degree they require
you to consume, 5 being the highest and 1 the lowest. Assume that each
activity is done for 10 min.
_________ writing on your notebook
_________ playing basketball
_________ singing
_________ walking to school
_________blinking of your eye.

Direction: Refer to the diagram and check your understanding of the

breathing system by labelling each part and giving its functions in the box
corresponding to the part.

D. Assimilation Answer the following question.

1. What is oxygen?
2. Why do we breathe?
3. What causes human to gasp for air?
V. REFLECTION Learners will write their personal insights about the lesson.
