Project Titel :
Objective of the
project:
The primary objective of this project is to enhance the efficiency of the
press section in the paper machine by improving the mechanical drying
process. By focusing on this critical area, the project aims to reduce the
reliance on thermal drying methods, thereby increasing the overall
efficiency of the paper manufacturing process.
Key Objectives:
Specific Tasks:
• Planning a laboratory setup to measure the dewatering behavior of
dry felts under pressing conditions
• Procurement of parts, assembly, and commissioning of the
laboratory setup
• Planning and conducting initial tests under standardized
conditions
• Characterization of the dewatering behavior of different felts under
applied pressure and associated deformation
• Creation of a first 2D model for the CFD simulation of the press
section taking into account the felt as a porous medium
• Integration of experimentally obtained data into the simulation
model by creating material constants for the flow resistance of the
porous medium
• Adaptation of the simulation model for a precise prediction of the
dewatering process in a paper machine based on the material data
of the felt
• Providing a functional model for further development and
adaptation

Project Description:
Introduction:
The study focuses on the dewatering behavior of dry felts under pressing conditions, which is critical in the
papermaking process. Efficient dewatering enhances paper quality and production efficiency. This thesis aims to
design and set up a laboratory to measure dewatering behavior, conduct tests, and develop a CFD simulation model
to predict the dewatering process.
Objectives / Targets:
Control Parameters:
To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the experimental and simulation processes, the following control param-
eters will be monitored and adjusted:
1. Pressure Applied:
o The amount of pressure applied to the felts during the dewatering process will be carefully con-
trolled to simulate real-world conditions in the press section.
2. Felt Characteristics:
o Different types of felts will be used and characterized based on their material properties, such as
thickness, permeability, and compressibility.
3. Dewatering Behavior:
o The rate and extent of water removal from the felts under pressing conditions will be measured to
establish baseline performance metrics.
4. Boundary Conditions:
o Experimentally determined boundary conditions, such as the pressure distribution and flow re-
sistance, will be used to enhance the accuracy of the simulation models.
5. Material Constants:
Material constants for the flow resistance of the porous medium will be derived from experimental data and inte-
grated into the simulation models to ensure precise predictions
Planned Outcome
The Gantt chart outlines the timeline for my Master's Thesis Project on optimizing the press section of a
paper machine. Starting in June, the project involves planning and procurement, followed by the
assembly and commissioning of the laboratory setup in August. Testing and characterization of
dewatering behavior and felt deformation occur from mid-August to September. From late September to
November, the focus shifts to developing and refining a 2D CFD model, integrating experimental data,
and validating the model. The project concludes in early January with the finalization of a functional
model and documentation of the validation process.
