Field Trip Report

To: Ms. Nur Aizuri, Course instructor

From: Wong Yin Zheng, Wong Yin Shun, Logistics Club

Date: 14 February 2023

Subject: Field Trip to Tiong Nam Ipoh

Tiong Nam is a logistics company that is a Malaysian multinational logistics company. It

provides logistics services to its customers from local market and international market. To

enhance members’ knowledge about logistics in an immersive way, the Logistics Club has

decided to have a field trip to one of the Tiong Nam branches in Ipoh, Perak. In addition, the

field trip was also to increase the cohesiveness among the members. The field trip was led by the

chairperson of Logistics Club with the assistance of two lecturers, together with 16 members

from Logistics Club. The trip was held on 21 January 2023. The participants including the

lecturers were provided a bus by UTAR Kampar to reach the destination. The group left the

assembly point, UTAR Kampar Block A, by 8.30 a.m. The bus reached the destination at 10.00

a.m., which was half an hour late than the time estimated.

After the participants reached the destination, the person in-charge, Ms. Ang welcomed

them at the front gate. Before entering the warehouse, Ms. Ang introduced the participants about

the safety measurement in the workplace, which was the warehouse. She said that the employees

in the warehouses were required to wear a pair of safety boots and a safety helmet to prevent

injuries if accidents occurred. Moreover, the participants were also required to wear a safety

helmet due to the reason that the group would be having a tour in the warehouse. Ms. Ang had

also briefed about the health and safety trainings that Tiong Nam provided to its employees.
After the safety briefing, Ms. Ang showed how the goods were unloaded from the cargo

trucks. Workers would use forklifts to unload and arrange the goods onto the racks. Besides, the

participants had also observed that how the goods were being recorded into the warehousing

system using computer. The workers scanned the barcode of each box of goods, and the

unloaded goods would be recorded in the inventory system. Ms. Ang showed the participants on

how the goods were categorized according to varieties, weight, and sequence of deliveries. Ms.

Ang briefly explained how the RFID system assisted in the daily operation of the warehouse by

synchronizing the information to avoid errors in the inventory.

Other than observing how the goods were unloaded and stored, Ms. Ang had also showed

the participants about how the workers would load the goods for delivery. Ms. Ang brought the

participants to the loading bay to show them the process of loading the truck containers for

delivery. Before loading the containers, the workers were required to check the condition of the

goods as to check if the goods were in good condition for delivery. After the checking process,

the workers would start to load the goods into the containers with caution. In the end of the

loading process, the system would be updated by the workers in charge to update the goods that

had been delivered.

By 3.00 p.m., the group had finished their field trip of the day and left the Tiong Nam

warehouse. Before leaving, the leader of the trip thanked Ms. Ang for her detailed and patient

explanation about the warehousing activities. After that, the group went to a restaurant nearby to

have their lunch. Many of the participants complained that the lunch time was set too late as all

of them were starving after the tour. Besides, the air conditioning system in the bus was not

functioning well, and it caused discomfort to the participants. However, there were also notable

events of this field trip. The students were able to understand what was demonstrated by Ms.
Ang, and they were also capable to apply some theories from the course to the warehousing

activities. It indicated that the field trip encouraged students to use their knowledge more flexibly

rather than only answering them in examination questions.

To enhance the experience of the next field trip, the club had decided to be more cautious

on planning the next field trip. The club would start by setting a lunch or break time in between

the sessions for the participants to rest. The club should also prepare food for the participants to

prevent starving. Besides, the bus driver would be encouraged to check the traffic condition by

using Waze before starting to drive, for the driver to avoid late arrival or traffic jam. Not only

that, the condition of the transport would also be checked to ensure that it would not cause

discomfort to the participants. To avoid causing interruption to the workplace, the students

would be encouraged to not talk loudly or wandering around during the field trip.

The field trip included briefing of safety in warehouses, unloading and storage of goods,

and processes of delivery goods from the warehouse. Even though there were inadequate areas

during the trip, it was a suitable approach to carry out practical knowledge for the students. The

field trip was knowledgeable and enjoyable for the participants as the feedbacks from them were

overall positive.
