IVECO SCREWS, NUTS AND SIMILAR 18-0509
PRODUCTS IN STEEL SUITABLE FOR
Standard WELDING Page 1/8
SPECIFICATIONS Date 18.11.2021

Supervisor: IVECO STD. 19-0201

Manager: IVECO STD. 19-0201

1 PURPOSE

This standard establishes the strength classes, mechanical characteristics, test methods and
marking of screws, nuts and similar products suitable for welding with:
In case of dispute the only valid reference is the original Italian/English edition.

- ISO metric thread with triangular profile according to IVECO STD. 10-3110, with toler
ance 6g 6H or more precise according to IVECO STD. 10-3130;

- thread diameters ≤39 mm;

- dimensional tolerances according to IVECO STD. 10-1481, unless otherwise specified in

the product standard or drawing;

- non-alloy or alloy steel;

- heat resistance to temperatures up to 300 °C;

- cold hardness up to temperatures above -50 °C.

The mechanical properties prescribed in this standard refer to ambient temperature.

(20 ±5 °C). For the correct use of screws in the different strength classes for temperatures
other than ambient, within the limits of +300 and -50 °C, it is necessary to take into account
the variation of the mechanical characteristics as a function of temperature, for each strength
class, with particular regard to the hardness for temperatures ranging from -20 to -50 °C.

2 25.10.1989 Replaced reference 15-2610 P.1 with 15-2603 in Table 1 and the
REFERENCE STANDARDS;
3 18.11.2021 Fully revised for update.

2 DESIGNATION OF THE RESISTANCE CLASSES

2.1 Screws

The symbol for designating the strength classes of screws suitable for welding includes the
upper case 'R' followed by:

- a number representing one hundredth of the nominal value of the unit tensile breaking load
Rm in N/mm2.

- upper case “SD”.

2.2 Nuts

The symbol for the designation of strength classes of nuts suitable for welding includes:

- a number indicating the maximum strength class of the screws with which these nuts can be
appropriately coupled.

- upper case “SD” (projection welding) or “SA” (arc welding).

3 CHARACTERISTICS OF SCREWS AND NUTS

3.1 Surface defects of screws

For verification of surface defects of screws with strength class R4 SD and R8 SD, see
IVECO STD. 18-0505-A006.

3.2 NUT DRIFT EXPANSION

The drift expanding test has the purpose of evaluating the toughness of the nut even in the
presence of surface defects (see point 4.5).

The minimum prescribed drift expanding values for all strength classes are:

a) 6 % for nuts with a nominal height. 0.8 d

b) 4 % for nuts with a nominal height < 0,8 d

c) 5 % for strength class 5 SD and 8 SA nuts made from high-speed steels (in this case 5 %
is the average of 3 tests): there should be no values of less than 3% in any test).

3.3 SURFACE DEFECTS OF THE NUTS

For verification of surface defects of nuts of strength classes 5 SD, 8 SD, 8 SA and 10 SD,
see IVECO STD. 18-0505-A007.

4 TEST PROGRAMMES

4.1 Screws

For the screw test programmes, with regard to the characteristics prescribed in IVECO STD.
15-2605, the indications provided in IVECO STD. 18-0505-A001 are valid.

4.2 Nuts

The tests to be carried out to verify the characteristics are as follows:

- Hardness test (See the indications provided in IVECO STD. 15-2605.

- Drift expansion test (See point 3.2).

- Inspection of surface defects (See point 3.3).

6 TEST METHODS

For test methods of screws see IVECO STD. 18-0505-A001.

For test methods of nuts see IVECO STD. 18-0505-A003.

7 MARKING

The marking consists of the symbol that identifies the resistance class and the trademark.

Marking is mandatory for screws of resistance class R8 SD and for nuts of resistance class
8 SD, 8 SA and 10 SD.
For the screw marking execution methods, see the indications provided in IVECO STD.
18-0505-A001.

For the nut marking execution methods, see the indications provided in IVECO STD.
18-0505-A003.

8 TEST

For testing, the requirements of IVECO STD. 18-0505-A010 apply. relating to:

- 2nd quality level, for screws of class R8 SD and nuts of class 8 SD, 8 SA and 10 SD.
- 3rd quality level, for screws of class R4 SD and nuts of class 5 SD.

9 APPROVAL FOR USE (Engineering release)

Unless otherwise indicated on the order or agreed upon, the Supplier must submit the follow
ing for approval: a sample of 20 elements of the type of product requested, on which the
characteristics specified in these Tender Specifications must be systematically verified, as
well as any characteristics prescribed in the drawing or in the product standard.

The aforementioned sample must be accompanied by the "Product Identification Sheet" (see
IVECO STD. 18-0015) and the "CNH Industrial advanced product quality planning and part
qualification process" (see PUR30 Standard) completed by the Supplier with reference to the
requirements of these Specifications and any other specifications on the drawing or on the
product standard.

Results of checks performed by the Supplier on the sample must only refer to non-destruc
tive tests.

With the sample, the Supplier must submit a report of all tests and inspections, including
destructive ones, indicated in these specifications and, where applicable, on the drawing or in
the product standard, and carried out on elements not belonging to the sample delivered.
