The status of the school canteen and the level of satisfaction are discussed in

this study under the guidance of the particular variables. This study investigated the

satisfaction of the students on the canteen services. This study also provided

suggestions on improving this management, raising sales, and improving levels of

satisfaction. The purpose of this research is to come up with innovative ideas to

enhance the school canteen, particularly with on their offers of products and

services.

Recently, Matho Integrated School's Canteen is continuously operating. The

management has affirmed its full responsibilities in implementing its guidelines on

sub school canteen with nutritious food's category being served. However, the

big situation of a small space of school canteen and also it is quite unorganized due

to the fact that it is very fragile. Hence, this proposed study could have its impact on

the improvements of School Canteen Services and how the students show

satisfaction on those services offered.

In order to find out how satisfied students were in the school canteen

services, researchers used quantitative research methods and a survey

questionnaire based on the study's objectives. Once all the data had been collected,

the questionnaires were tallied, presented, analyzed, and concluded.

The findings revealed that the majority of the respondents are female,

between the ages of 12 and 15, and they are in Grade 9. 3.6 is the weighted mean.

demonstrated how happy the respondents are with the canteen services.

Furthermore, the associations between the respondents' demographic profile and the

variables influencing students' happiness do not significantly affect the latter.

The high level of satisfaction among Matho IS students can assist our canteen

staff in providing better services.

Researchers advise students to communicate their opinions about the school

canteen services as a result. Workers at the canteen can survey customers and get

feedback to come up with an idea that will boost daily sales. Finally, researchers

advise school administrators to implement an orientation that outlines the standards

for selling the products they produce.

CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction
School Canteen is a place where you fill your hungry stomach after spending

many hours in a class or in an office. This is where students and teachers can buy

their wants and needs in a budget-friendly price. Some students and even teachers

considered canteen a second home where they can consume foods that are clean,

well-cooked, and at a reasonable price. As the saying goes, "For a healthy body is a

healthy mind." It also help them to lessen or decrease the stress after a class hours.

It is the responsibility of the canteen and its staff to serve a clean and healthy

products and well-mannered services. School canteens play an imperative role in the

provision of nutritious meals to students.

The enforcement of proper hygiene and food sanitation in school canteen was

inadequately executed, demonstrating deficiencies in multiple aspects such as food

handling practices and storage amenities (International Journal of Science and

Research Archive, 2023). Customers Satisfaction plays a crucial role in the progress

of a business, as it is closely tied to its profitability and the frequency of customers

purchases. The bond between customer satisfaction and loyalty is strong, although it

should be noted that satisfaction alone might be sufficient to establish a loyal

customer base. A recent study conducted an intervention to determine the

effectiveness of online menu labels when combined with menu audit and feedback

strategies in promoting healthier purchasing from school canteen ordering systems

(Zheng, 2022).

Recently, Matho Integrated School's Canteen is continuously operating. The

management has affirmed its full responsibilities in implementing its guidelines on

sub school canteen with nutritious food's category being served. However, the

management of school canteen of Matho Integrated School are looking forward to a

big situation of a small space of school canteen and also it is quite unorganized due

to the fact that it is very fragile. Hence, this proposed study could have its impact on

the improvements of School Canteen Services and how the students show

satisfaction on those services offered.

Thus, this study has addressed the significant issues and concerns on the

services of the school canteen of Matho Integrated School. As to the underlying

management of school canteen operation, all personal comments of the respondents

would be emphasized using a survey questionnaires provided by the researchers.

Theoretical Framework

The theories which this study anchored are essential to investigate the level of

satisfaction to the school canteen services of Matho Integrated School. Thus, the

theories offer explanations to the conceptual bases in this study.

The Service Quality Theory by Parasuraman, Zeithaml, and Berry (2024).

That stated that services must need to meet customers needs and wants. Delivering

a service quality to customer will lead to a high rating of satisfaction when a

customer fulfill his/her wants and needs.

The unease or tension that results from having opposing attitudes, values, or

beliefs is known as Cognitive Dissonance Theory (Festinger in 2021). In the context

of the canteen, cognitive dissonance might happen when students have high

expectations and end up being let down by the food, service, or general experience.

Cognitive dissonance arises when students expect or have a good attitude about the

cafeteria yet have a bad experience. Between their early convictions and their

current bad experience.

The last theory focused on Satisfaction Theory by Fred Reichheld (2022)

satisfaction is depending on the expectation of the customer. That's why these theory

is significant for this study to find out the reason behind the satisfactory level of

students to its foods and services to their chosen school canteens.

Conceptual Framework

A recent study conducted an intervention to determine the effectiveness of

online menu labels when combined with menu audit and feedback strategies in

promoting healthier purchasing from school canteen ordering systems (Zheng,

2022).

As underscored by Prabandari and Sembiring (2023), school canteen

customer satisfaction is influenced by factors such as hygiene and sanitation.

As underscored the significance of parental involvement in the active

participation of management committees in ensuring the efficient operation of school

canteens, which can result in enhanced meals for students (Nouatin, 2023).

Additionally, the perception of challenges encountered by school canteens

encompass expenses, limited authority over street food vendors, and the necessity

for trained personal (Abril-Ulloa, 2023).

In research, the respondent demographic profile is crucial for a number of

reasons. First of all, it aids in guaranteeing that the sample is representative and that

the conclusions are broadly applicable. Through the inclusion of participants from

varying sociodemographic backgrounds, researchers can achieve a more thorough

comprehension of the group they are examining. Second, the respondents'

demographic profile can offer insightful information about the traits and requirements

of particular groups (The IMAS European Survey, 2022).

According to an article about Importance of Healthy Food for Students of

2022, it has been suggested about finding a balance and making sure your body

gets the nourishment it needs to operate properly are the goals of eating healthful

meals. A balanced diet for students must include whole grains, fruits and vegetables,

proteins, and carbs. Remember that eating well requires awareness of both what you

put in your body and how it is prepared. To get the most out of eating a nutritious

diet, student

should stay away from packaged, fried, and meals with a lot of added sugar and salt.

From the policy of Department of Education entitled "Canteens, Healthy

Eating and Other Food Services" published in 2020, it has stated the important

educational resources include school canteens and other food services. In addition

to being an essential component of the school atmosphere, they play a significant

role in providing food for students and the school community. The school canteen

must to promote and enhance students' learning while also reflecting the institution's

educational objectives. When eaten regularly, the food served in the school cafeteria

may make up up to one-third of a student's daily caloric intake, which can have a

substantial impact on their nutrition and general health.

In Vietnam, one of the main issues pertaining to public health is food safety.

The Vietnam Food Administration received reports on 1095 foodborne outbreaks,

36,404 cases, 28,277 hospitalizations, and 266 fatalities between 2007 and 2012.

(Vietnam Food Administration, 2011). Large school canteens and enterprises located

in industrial zones were the sites of some of these outbreaks. Between 2007 and

2010, the percentage of outbreaks with 30 cases or more made up 28% of all

outbreaks and 81% of all cases that were recorded.

Besides, Food safety is mostly dependent on proper food handling techniques

and excellent personal hygiene. Everyone who works in the kitchen or handles food,

including volunteers and kids, has to be aware of the proper food safety protocols. To

make sure that the right processes are followed, it is imperative to designate a

person to oversee canteen operations, including training on food safety. It is

imperative that the manager or supervisor of the canteen, whether they are

employed or volunteer, possess the ability to explain these protocols, which

encompass food safety concepts, to all staff members (FoodSafety, 2022).

Ministry of Education (2020) concluded that the health, well-being, and

academic performance of school-age children are influenced by their dietary state.

More than six hours a day are spent in school by those between the ages of five and

eighteen, thus improving their nutritional condition is an investment in meeting

educational goals and developing the human capital required for the nation's

progress. schools.

Meanwhile, Five meal components are needed to be served in schools: fruit,

vegetables, grains, meat or meat substitute, and milk. Offering at least two choices

within one of these meal component categories (e.g.. two varieties of fruit) was found

by the majority of trials (8 of 12) to boost consumption. Giving pupils options makes it

more likely that they will find at least one that suits their varying tastes. These

options can be found at salad bars or on the lunch line-studies indicates that

students eat more when salad bars are placed before serving lines rather than after

them (Research Brief, 2021).

DepEd Order 13, series of 2017, postulated the policy and guidelines on

healthy food And beverage choices in the schools and in DepEd offices. According to

the memorandum, canteen staff should make an available healthier food and drink

menus among to students and teacher inside the campus. Additionally, it stated the

guidance provided in the selling and marketing of foods and beverage in the school

to sum up it all, the memorandum order wants to have a healthy, strong, and

environmental friendly school wherein students and even teachers secure a safety

and healthy well being.

Within the context of daily existence, food is one of a person's basic

necessities. To satisfy our hunger and basic needs, it is a human need that we must

continue to have. In order for our bodies to work, grow, and serve their intended

purposes, it also supplies vitamins and minerals. Nonetheless, a daily diet is still

required. Three categories describe the many functions that food performs in our

bodies: go, grow, and glow. Consequently, there isn't a diet that can meet a person's

entire nutritional demands. Because of this, it's critical that a daily diet include all the

elements required, and that eating the appropriate quantity of food each day will

serve as a guide for adequate and healthful nutrition (Velasquez, 2020).

As what the Presidential Decree No.856 S.2020 on 'Promulgating the Code

on Sanitation of the Philippines stated the improvement of the way of the Filipinos by

directing public health services towards the production and promotion of the health of

its people. It also tackled in the decree that the provisions of food establishments

and providing a clean water supply must be conducted. In order to manage a public

food establishment, a permit shall be obtained from health office and makes

provisions among others, requirements for food stalls' structure, quality and

protection of all types of food products, evaluation of food surroundings, health

certificate of food stall staffs and also the treatment of bactericidal.

The majority of the female employees in the school canteen are of legal age.

Most of them are high school and college graduates. Only one employee who has

worked in the school canteen for more than a year has taken part in a food handling

and preparation course. As a result, the personnel at the school canteen lacks the

necessary tools and knowledge to properly handle and serve food (Pajantoy, 2022).

On the basis of Labay, Macuha, Mondragon, Sarmiento, Veron, Salazar, and

Caiga (2021), the canteen employees should go to workshops and seminars on food

service to learn more about how to enhance their offerings. Every month, the

administration of the canteen may carry out facility maintenance. The cafeteria

employees are obliged to display laws and regulations, proper trash disposal

techniques, and waste segregation instructions on their walls. This will enable them

to come up with creative ways to enhance their offerings, particularly the canteen's

cleanliness and safety.

Furthermore, the article of Licudan and Caballes (2023) suggested that the

respondents may choose cleanliness over pricing when it comes to their school

cafeteria experience, as seen by the results that indicate the cleanliness of the

canteen received the highest ranking while the price of the food received the lowest.

This might imply that in order to satisfy the expectations of its pupils, the school

should concentrate on keeping the canteen area tidy and sanitary. Meanwhile, 240

Maritime students were selected at random to participate in a descriptive research

design. The study's findings indicated that the participants are satisfied. Students at

LIMA concurred that issues with the canteen included inadequate space,

uncomfortable chairs and tables, and inadequate ventilation (Labay, Macuha,

Mondragon, Sarmiento, Veron, Salazar, Caiga, 2014).

In brief, the local literature that was previously indicated was all relevant to the

subject matter of our investigation. Due to the nutrients and minerals it contains,

which our bodies need on a daily basis, food is actually essential to human survival.

The seller of goods is required to abide by any guidelines or directives provided to

them by the DepEd Order and Presidential Decree. By following these policies, the

true goal of feeding people is upheld, and consumers are guaranteed to be happy

with the food and services they get. To properly handle and prepare the food, most

food staff members in the Philippines are female. Furthermore, some research

demonstrates how important hygiene and sanitation are to preventing dangerous

infections that might make a person less tolerant of the food they eat.

Given the widespread use of social media and the proliferation of social

commerce websites, it is crucial to look at the variables influencing users' behavioral

intents to stick with a certain social commerce website. The purpose of this study is

to examine the variables that influence consumers' intentions to repurchase and

spread word-of-mouth (WOM), which are regarded as important behavioral intents

after purchases made through social commerce. This study suggests that consumer

behaviors that influence repurchase and word-of-mouth (WOM) include trust and

contentment (Meilatinova, 2021).

However, Berge, Hazzard, Noser, Hochgraf, and Sztainer in 2023, concluded

that family meal quantity and quality were found to be independently linked to a

number of health and well-being outcomes for children (such as lower obesity

prevalence, better diet quality, less fussiness and food responsiveness, and fewer

emotional, peer relationship, and conduct problems), some parents (such as higher

diet quality, lower psychological distress), and families (such as less domestic

chaos). Healthcare professionals should stress the value of eating a large and

nutritious family dinner.

The food handlers at Kenyan high schools have a reasonable understanding

of food contamination, but they have a poor understanding of personal hygiene and

the spread of food-borne illnesses. Regarding food safety and sanitation, over half of

research participants had never taken any kind of training or refresher course, and

nearly none of them are aware of what Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points

(HACCP) are (Illés, Dunay, Serrem, and Afubukha, 2021).

On the one hand, school canteens tend to provide low amounts of fruits and

vegetables and unhealthy meals and items with high fat, sugar, or salt levels. School

administrators, parents, and canteen operators believe that schools are good

locations to encourage a healthy diet and that it may be very helpful to include food

and health instruction into the curricula so that kids choose to eat healthily on their

own. Conversely, it is crucial that kids grow up in a setting where positive behaviors

are valued both at home and at school, and where parents and teachers lead healthy

lifestyles. If this isn't the case, it will be exceedingly challenging for educational

materials alone to influence kids' behavior (Ledesma, Ulloa, Vēlez, Arias, 2023).

Meanwhile, according to Sánchez, Diaz, Gamba, Grisotto, Londoño, Uribe,

Méndez, Ballesteros, Heim, Minder, Suggs, and Franco, in 2021, forty papers were

chosen from a total of 4,479 distinct references. While social or situational elements

were assessed in 11 out of 40 investigations, personal aspects were the focus of all

studies. Females exhibited higher levels of SFC behaviors, with the exception of

food waste, but this link was mitigated by situational circumstances. Mixed findings

were

found for knowledge and attitudes. Consumers of sustainable food generally

reported leading better lives.

Additionally, food's aesthetic attractiveness has a big impact on how satisfied

customers are. To improve the canteen's food presentation and make it more visually

attractive, think about using creative food display methods from other cultures. This

might involve employing unusual serving utensils or inventive packaging methods

(Putra, Amantadjaya, and Nawangwulan, 2020).

In the article of Roland Cartagena in 2021, he stated that schools are the ideal

locations to put obesity and over nutrition solutions into practice since kids and teens

spend most of their time there and, as a result, consume more there than at home.

This makes it necessary to conduct research to determine the caliber of the food that

kids and teenagers are consuming at school canteens.

The relationship between the food standard and the state of the school

cafeteria and the services it provides demonstrates how important the administrative

support system, financial management, menu, food preparation procedures, and

kitchen facilities are. This means that the catered services will be of a high caliber if

the management or the school administration provides any assistance to the canteen

operation. Additionally, the Department of Education's directives and the dietary

standard that matters to the students will be followed (Pajantoy and Ubane, 2022).

When schools are categorized based on their nutritional standing, there are

differences in the challenges they face in upholding hygienic and sanitation

standards in food sanitation (food handling procedures). In comparison to those with

less than 8% wasted and severely wasted children, those with more than 8% wasted

and seriously wasted learners have a greater degree of issues (Graciadas, 2018).

Meanwhile, Disparities exist in the obstacles schools have in maintaining food

sanitation (food handling procedures) standards of hygiene and sanitation when they

are classified according to their nutritional status. Less than 8% of wasted and badly

wasted children fall into this category; learners with more than 8% of wasted and

severely wasted children have more problems (Dela Cruz, 2019).

Lastly, in the study of National Teachers College (2023), they found out that to

raise the caliber of services provided by school canteens, it is critical to comprehend

the usual experiences of kids with school cafeteria operations. If the quality and

variety of food is found to be a significant factor in determining student satisfaction,

canteen operators can work to provide more popular and culturally appropriate

dishes in addition to healthier options. By identifying the key factors that influence

student satisfaction, canteen operators can develop targeted strategies to address

areas of weakness and improve the overall quality of the food service.

Synthesis

According to some literatures, the demographic details of the people who

answered the survey is important to make sure the sample group properly shows the

whole population and that the results can apply to everyone. For students to do well

at school and be healthy, eating good food is key and balanced diets without too

many processed foods are best. School cafeterias are important for feeding students

nutritious food and shaping how they eat. However, problems like food safety issues

in school canteen show how important it is to handle food correctly and follow

cleanliness rules. Overall, encouraging healthy eating at schools is a worthwhile

investment in kids' health and school success, needing a comprehensive plan like

offering many lunch choices and using cost-effective ways to get food. The overview

emphasizes the importance of food in everyday life and the need for a balanced diet.

The articles emphasize the role of food in controlling hunger, providing

essential nutrients and supporting the functioning of the body. It has been said that

there are three categories of food business: go, grow, and shine. The information

includes policies and guidelines implemented by the Department of Education

(DepEd) and the government to ensure healthy food choices in school canteen

facilities. The importance of proper food handling and preparation is emphasized, as

well as the need for staff training and skills.

The researchers used quantitative research methods. Quantitative method

has been used to quantify data to support or disprove a hypothesis that investigated

the level of satisfaction to the school canteen services as perceived by the students.

On the other hand, the purpose of this method is also to quantify individual ideas and

further deepen the satisfactory level of the students based on the findings of the

study. To effectively gather the data needed for this study, the researcher have used

a survey questionnaire to gathered relevant data from the respondents.

Research Locale

The cooperating school where the study must be completed is Matho

In selecting identified student-respondents in this study, a systematic

sampling technique will be utilized. It is a probability sampling method where

researcher select a sample of respondents out of the total population (Thomas,

2022). In this method, it will perform a "counting off based on the list which

comprised 351 students enrolled in Matho Integrated School for this School Year

2022-2023. The researcher have randomly selected every 5th student from the list.

From the number 5 onwards, every 5th student from the starting number will be

selected as respondents (5, 10, 15, 20 and so on), and will end up with a sample of

47 respondents. The sample targeted respondents have been taken from the list of

Grade 7 to 12 enrolled students in the cooperating school regardless of sex and

grade level. The table below shows the distribution of the respondents of this study.

p-value 0.421 0.066 0.251

The correlation matrix provides an analysis of the relationship between the

demographic profile of respondents (age, sex, and grade level) and the factors

affecting students' satisfaction with canteen services.

As to Age and Students' Satisfaction, the Pearson's r value for age is 0.120,

indicating a very weak positive correlation between age and students' satisfaction

with canteen services. With a degrees of freedom (df) of 45, the p-value for this

correlation is 0.421. This p-value is significantly higher than the common threshold of

0.05, indicating that the relationship between age and students' satisfaction is not

statistically significant. Therefore, age does not appear to have a meaningful impact

on students' satisfaction with the canteen services.

Moving on to Sex and Students' Satisfaction, the Pearson's r value for sex is

0.271, suggesting a weak positive correlation between sex and students' satisfaction

with canteen services. With 45 degrees of freedom, the p-value for this correlation is

0.066. This p-value is slightly above the typical significance threshold of 0.05,

indicating that while there is a weak positive relationship between sex and students'

satisfaction, it is not quite statistically significant. This suggests that sex may have

CORTES DISTRICT
MATHO INTEGRATED SCHOOL

some influence on students' satisfaction, but the evidence is not strong enough to

conclusively affirm this.

Lastly, in terms of Grade Level and Students' Satisfaction, the Pearson's r

value for grade level is 0.171, indicating a weak positive correlation between grade

level and students' satisfaction with canteen services. The degrees of freedom for

this analysis is 45, and the p-value is 0.251. This p-value is higher than the 0.05

significance level, indicating that the relationship between grade level and students'

satisfaction is not statistically significant. Therefore, grade level does not have a

meaningful impact on students' satisfaction with the canteen services.

In summary, the correlation matrix shows weak positive correlations between

the demographic factors (age, sex, and grade level) and students' satisfaction with

canteen services. However, none of these relationships are statistically significant,

as indicated by their respective p-values (0.421 for age, 0.066 for sex, and 0.251 for

grade level). Consequently, the demographic profile of the respondents does not

have a significant impact on the factors affecting students' satisfaction with canteen

services.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter provides an overview of the research and a conclusion drawn

from the data examined in previous chapters. A few suggestions have also been

made in regard to the study's findings.

Findings

The following important findings are outlined after a careful examination of the

information gathered and the outcomes achieved.

1. The researchers found out that majority of the respondents are 12 years old to 15

years old, most of them are female, and a Grade 9 learners.

2. The overall mean from all variables and the average weighted mean of 3.6 show

that Matho IS students are very satisfied with the school canteen services. This level

of satisfaction can assist our beloved vendors in improving and developing their

product in order to gain positive comments from customers.

3. There is no significant difference in the demographic profile of the respondents as

to age, sex and grade level regarding the Factors affecting the Students' Satisfaction

to the school canteen services.

Conclusion

Based on the indicated findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Caraga Region
SCHOOL DIVISION OF SURIGAO DEL SUR
CORTES DISTRICT
MATHO INTEGRATED SCHOOL

1. The majority of respondents in our survey are younger, primarily between the ages

of 12 and 15, with fewer respondents in the 16-18 age range. Furthermore, female

represent the majority of those surveyed. In terms of grade level, the majority of

respondents are in Grade 9 and have 12 students. It's crucial to remember that these

results only apply to the group that was surveyed; they might not accurately

represent the preferences of all students at Matho Integrated School.

2. Matho IS students are satisfied with the school canteen services at Matho

Integrated School. This high level of satisfaction can benefit both sellers and buyers

of the school canteen, potentially leading to the development and improvement of

school canteen services.

3. Grade Level is a crucial factor to consider when analyzing student satisfaction with

School Canteen Services. The results indicate that students who have been enrolled

in Matho Is over a longer period of time are more likely to benefit from School

Canteen services. Furthermore, age is an important factor to consider because older

students may make better decisions than those younger about school canteen

services. However, demographic factors such as age, gender, and grade level are

unlikely to have a major impact on the factors affecting students' satisfaction. It is

critical to consider these findings when developing strategies to improve school

canteen services and student satisfaction.

Recommendations

With the said Conclusions, the researchers would like to recommend the following:

1. The researchers would recommend in this study of students Satisfaction regarding

to the School Canteen Service. For Students, actively share your thoughts and

suggestions about the school canteen Service, maintain cleanliness and orderliness

in canteen, be an advocate for a greater variety of healthy food choices, and respect

Canteen staff and their efforts to provide a good service.

2. It is highly recommended for the canteen staff to implement surveys to gather

feedback, freshness of the food, ensure the Canteen kept clean, attend orientation

for Canteen improvements, and train staff to be friendly.

3. For School Administrators, create a standard that the Canteen staff must follow,

build a orientation and explain the DepEd Order 8, S,2007 and proposed a

renovation of the school Canteen establishment.
